Why would a mother and calf beaked whale become beached?

On the evening of July 27th, two rare True’s beaked whales live stranded at Kilcummin Back Strand, Co. Mayo. This mother and calf pair was seen swimming rapidly into shallow waters just before high tide, ultimately beaching themselves. Tragically, the mother whale died moments after stranding, while the calf managed to escape but died a number of days later. A post-mortem by Frank O’Sullivan vet from Dublin Zoo and Pawsawhile assisted by vet students revealed the mother was lactating, indicating her calf was dependent on her for survival.

The incident provided a rare glimpse into the pre-stranding behavior of these elusive creatures, thanks to footage captured by a member of the public. The Irish Whale and Dolphin Group (IWDG) appreciates those who alerted them and the trained responders who quickly arrived on the scene. True’s beaked whales are deep-diving species and in reality should only live 50 to 70 km out to sea beyond the Atlantic shelf in deeper waters (2/3km deep). They only venture into shallower areas when they face severe underlying issues such as illness or acoustic trauma.Notably, other deep-diving species have also stranded recently in Scotland and the Netherlands prompting concerns of acoustic damage, perhaps by explosions or mining underwater.Sad to report in the following weeks Frank and team also attended a second Beaked whale stranding off Helvic head Waterford.

Live strandings of these whales are particularly alarming, as they are not suitable for refloating due to their distance from their natural habitat and the risk of repeated strandings.

A post-mortem examination of the deceased whale was conducted on-site by Frank and veterinary students. The IWDG expresses gratitude to the veterinary team and local residents for their invaluable support during this distressing event and for the general surveillance that the public provide about marine mammal strandings.
