A research team led by Nicola Walshe from UCD's School of Veterinary Medicine is looking for Thoroughbred breeders / farm managers willing to discuss a set of new Irish best practice parasite control guidelines, to ensure they are both practical and implementable for breeders nationwide. By taking part in a once-off, 2-hour online focus group you can help curb the rise in parasite resistance to anti-parasitic drugs (wormers). If you care about preserving the efficacy of wormers for Irish Thoroughbreds and are available for 2 hours on either:

Thursday 22nd of February OR
Friday 23rd of February OR
Tuesday 5th of March

Please consider contributing by emailing Mrs Christiane O'Brien ([email protected]) for more details. Participants will also be invited to ask Nicola Walshe a personal question about parasite control on their own yard. This project is funded by the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine.

It’s difficult for us horse doctors to admit we aren’t superhuman. We’re hardwired to be there for you and your horse whenever you need us. But we’re finally in the midst of an overdue reality check as a profession and admitting that our desire to be available 24/7 isn’t compatible with our own personal health and happiness.

The most significant pain point for many of us is caring for our clients during regular business hours and then being on call for emergencies after hours. If we are a single-doctor or small practice, this traditionally has been the case most nights of the week.

The good news is that the AAEP along with private veterinary practices and veterinary schools are focused on developing new models for emergency care which ease the strain on individual practitioners. This includes the growth of emergency cooperatives where two or more practices in a geographic area work together to share after-hours care, as well as more emergency-only practices and the use of tele-triage services to address client concerns after normal business hours.

As equine veterinarians reevaluate what after-hours care looks like for their practices, we know that the support of our clients is critical to creating a balance that works for both of us. If your horse doctor talks with you about changes in how after-hours care is delivered, we hope you’ll welcome the adjustments, knowing that this evolution of emergency care must take place in order for equine veterinarians to avoid burnout and continue to be available to treat all of our patients. We appreciate our partnership with you, and your horse does too!

Getting a lot of calls about castration in the last 2 weeks , this time of year is not the right time to castrate colts there are far too many flies around which increases the rate of infection. Spring and autumn are the best times to castrate. For now just enjoy the sunshine while it lasts ☀️☀️☀️

Very good reminder about the importance of regular dental exams by a vet. Give us a call if it has been awhile since your horse’s last dental 🦷

February is Veterinary Dental Health Month - here is your reminder about the importance of having a veterinarian check your horse’s teeth at least once a year!

Contrary to what you may think, equine dentistry is not just about “floating” teeth and dental diseases can have an impact on your horse's body that go beyond the mouth alone. Remember: just because your equine friend is not showing any obvious symptoms of dental disease, it does not automatically mean that all is well. Horses simply adapt to their discomfort and most horses with dental problems will show no noticeable signs at all, until the disease is a serious source of pain and infection that can affect the animal’s overall health.

If you don’t already have a plan in place, be sure to contact your veterinarian today to discuss your equine friend’s dental health and prevent more painful and costly problems later!

Remember many foals this time of year are still too young for Moxidectin (Equest or Equest Pramox). Foals require 5 days Fenbendazole (Panacur) at 3, 5 and 7 months of age to eliminate ascarids.
5 days of Fenbendazole is the most effective at killing ascarids not Ivermectin / Moxidectin which can be dangerous for young foals. Give us a call if you have questions about worming your horses.
