Perfect autumn day for a trip to the beach with the dogs ….only the tide was out, leaving nothing but shallow muddy pools. 🤦♀️
Luna was delighted with herself and had the time of her life splashing in muddy puddles - she’s a retriever and it’s in her nature to want to retrieve things from shallow water.

📍To replace active interactions with their owner
📍To reduce the need for breed specific activities.
📍To get rid of a dog’s ‘energy’
The pattern is clear, yeah?
You cannot mentally enrich a dog from wanting to fulfil their breed instincts.
You cannot mentally enrich a dog from wanting to go outside and sniff an actual organic, changing environment.
You cannot use enrichment to stop ANYTHING. It is something to be used in tandem with something else, not a replacement.
Yes, give your dog a kong if you leave them in a crate while you are gone for a short time AND also take them out for a walk or to play before and after you put them in.
Yes, give your dog a puzzle feeder or snuffle mat when you are on a work call or cooking dinner, but ALSO take them on a walk where they have time to sniff and listen to the sounds all around them.
Dogs are animals. Enrichment toys are artificial. They’re great tools but they’ll never come close to the thing dogs are actually craving.
They’ll never exercise their bodies the in way they need, running and stretching.
And they’ll never exercise their brains in the way they need, using their sense of smell and sound to make sense of an ever-changing environment.
