I've spent my entire life feeling ashamed and trying to hide away from people. Making myself smaller and smaller as the years went by. That's changing now. I went on a shopping spree of note and for the first time in my life I have an actual wardrobe. A choice of outfits. It feels wonderful. 😁

Here's the brave Ernie 81 days into his rehab. He seems to have turned a corner. This is his 3rd day trotting.
There are a number of factors involved in this. It's not all about better hoof trimming.

When an action is not performed for an extended period of time the neural pathways and muscle memory become weakened. They have to be re educated. In simple terms, Ernie forgot how to trot

Horses are social learners and take cues from other horses about what's safe to do. Seeing MacDonald trot likely reassured him that trotting is okay again.

That's not the reason I put MacDonald in with him. He was moved into Ernie's paddock 3 days ago to make it easier for me to treat his leg problems.

This has become an amazing added bonus.

I present to you Mademoiselle Phoebe Du Maurier.

To give you all an idea of what we're dealing with, here are Ernie's x rays.
Severe pedal bone rotation caused, by chronic laminitis, a condition he arrived with just over 4 years ago. He has lost about 1/3 of the pedal bone due to necrosis.
The received wisdom says that the bone will never regenerate and the laminae, which attach the pedal bone to the hoof wall will never grow back. Maybe they're right.
But how do they know? How many people have tried to rehabilitate these cases? It's a long and arduous journey for both pony and owner. Its easier to just euthanize them, something which, by the way, my vet has not yet suggested.
My goal is to get Ernie pasture sound, free of pain and with a good quality of life and so far we apoear to be heading in the right direction, judging by the improvement shown in his x rays and movement.
I will put him to sleep if he deteriorates but for now we'll keep going.
Feel free to share your own success stories.
Do NOT feel free to share your ill informed, depleting opinions.

Well would you look at that. Its 79 days since I stopped following the Hoofing Marvellous trimming protocol which did Ernie so much damage and today, for the first time, HE'S TROTTING !!!
