Jimmy's time is coming to an end. It's two days now that he barely eats anything and mostly just rests or sleeps.
There are no words to describe the pain I am going through right now having to say goodbye to the dog I always wanted as a child but only found over a year ago.
I don't know much about Jimmy's life before I met him at the shelter, I just know that he had a very tough life of hunger, injuries and pain. He was a killer dog who killed every puppy, injured or old dog, out of desperation as he was starved of food most of his life.
When I saw him the first time he only weighed 12 kg and had no hope of survival. I sat beside him and told him that I don't want him to leave already, as he never experienced any human kindness just suffering and abuse.I promised him that if he pulls through the night, I will adopt him and become his human. And he pulled through, started to eat chicken which I handfed him.
We trained every day very hard to change his aggressive behaviour and a few months later he became the most mellow and sweet dog I ever met. Puppies could take food from his mouth, he fell in love with a dog called Julie and they became a real couple.
They were the first dogs in the shelter who played and became the core of my pack for dog therapy.
Finally last November I was able to take Jimmy and Julie out of the shelter and gave them a permanent home. Every day we enjoyed long walks together, Jimmy got the best food so that he even got a small belly and sleeps every night in a cozy bed.
He was the dog I always wanted as a child from my parents but never got. I am so grateful having been able to get to know this one of a million dog, who taught me so much.
The next days will be very hard, but I will stay beside him, I had promised it to him not to leave him until he takes his last breath.
