Puppy mills can be large or small operations, but at any size they have a complete disregard for the health and wellness of their breeding dogs, housing them in conditions ranging from unacceptable to downright cruel.
Adoption is the best option if you’re looking for a puppy. There are thousands of puppies in shelters and rescues looking for home like yours!
If you must purchase a certain type of dog for a specific job, avoid puppy mills by looking for a few things in a breeder. Make sure that you can meet the parents of your future puppy, that the parents have had all the health screenings recommended for their breed, and that their parents are successful at the job you need your puppy to do.
NEVER purchase a puppy online or from a pet store. Even USDA-inspected breeders can be puppy mills.
If you see puppies in poor condition, don’t purchase a puppy to “save” them - this only encourages the breeder to continue operating the way they are to make money - Contact the appropriate authorities instead.
