Like most carp, goldfish produce a large amount of waste both in their faeces and through their gills, releasing harmful chemicals into the water. Build-up of this waste to toxic levels can occur in a relatively short period of time, and can easily cause a goldfish's death. For common and comet varieties, each goldfish should have about 78 litres of water. Fancy goldfish (which are smaller) should have about 40 litres per goldfish. The water surface area determines how much oxygen diffuses and dissolves into the water. A general rule is have 1 square foot. Active aeration by way of a water pump, filter or fountain effectively increases the surface area. The optimum temperature for goldfish is between 23 °C and 28 °C.
If left in the dark for a period of time, goldfish gradually change color until they are almost gray. Goldfish produce pigment in response to light, in a similar manner to how human skin becomes tanned in the sun.

The MEDAKA

The first genetically modified pet to go on sale was a medaka, or rice fish, with a green fluorescent jellyfish gene, launched in Taiwan in 2003. The “Night Pearl”, or TK-1, is sterilised before sale.

It was swiftly followed by the GloFish, a zebrafish with fluorescent genes from jellyfish or corals that has become a popular aquarium fish in the US and parts of Asia, with green, red and yellow versions available and more on the way. Like the medaka, it was a spin-off from scientific research. It is not approved in Australia, Canada, California or Europe, though there have been illegal imports. If released into the wild, it would only have a chance of surviving in tropical regions.

A Little Bit Of Flowerhorn Fish History!
Flowerhorn is a truly wonderful fish. Eye cathcing, captivating and awe inspiring these fishes has taken the world by storm. Flowerhorn fish history involves trying to explain the origins of a flowerhorn in order for us to truly appreciate this species. From its first appearance up to the present time the Rajah Cichlasoma is constantly evolving to meet the ultimate aim of fish hobbyists a beautiful body with matching colors, distinguished stripes, gorgeous shine, a nice big kok and hopefully a more hardy and disease resistant fish. This chart explains the evolution of flowerhorn fishes.
Flowerhorns were believed to have first evolved in Malaysia sometime in 1993 although many Malaysian breeders would contend to having bred them as early as the 1980's. Malaysians admired these various cross bred cichlid fishes with protruding head, known as Karoi, in the western part of Malaysia. These Karoi fishes were most probably cross breed of Cichlosoma festae and Cichlosoma trimaculatus as to the exact steps and proportion onl the master breeders would know. The Taiwanese were also at the same time breeding these chiclids due to the auspicious nature that a slight protruding forehead and long tail, would bring. The following year (1994)saw the introduction of the Red devil cichlid to Malaysia which gave the early flowerhorns their human face or monkey face characteristic. The cross breed were aptly named as The Human Face Red God Of Fortune. The following year (1995)the Human Face Red God Of Fortune were bred to the blood parrot which gave rise to five colors god of fortune. They were also called as Chai sen strain and included also the three colors and five colors god of fortune. In 1998 the jing gang parrot and seven-colours blue fiery mouth, from South America, known as Greenish Gold Tiger were used to create what is now known as the Hua Lou Han. The Hua Lou Han is what we now know as the modern day flowerhorn. The following are pictures of early flowerhorns known as the Hua Kok as made popular by Ah Meng in 2000.
What followed then was the widespread distribution of the flowerhorn to surrounding countries and to the Western world. Widespread distribution also meant widespread breeding and inbreeding to further develope new strains which would create flowerhorns that would be representative of that particular region. Thus we have thai, indo, singapore, taiwan, pinoy strains of flowerhorn. But from whatever part of the world they would come from they still fall into four major breed categories namely the zhen zhou, kamfa, kamalau and the golden base.

How Fish & Color Can Help Relieve Anxiety & Stress

Fish or color can affect your mind, changing stress and anxiety levels, in a variety of ways. Color can calm, and fish in a tank may help some folks sleep better. You also can consume fish -- and place your body in a fish pose -- to achieve stress or anxiety relief.
Fish Tank
If your child is having trouble with anxiety, putting a fish tank in her room may help out, say Jodi A. Mindell and Judith A Owens, authors of "A Clinical Guide to Pediatric Sleep." There is a strong relationship between anxiety disorders and sleep disturbances. The fish tank creates an environmental change in the child's room that may help relieve her anxiety symptoms that happen at bedtime or throughout the night, helping her to gain proper sleep.
Fish for Brain Health
Eating fish may help alleviate anxiety and stress, according to "The Anxiety Book" by Jonathan Davidson and Henry Dreher. That's because the omega-3 fatty acids in fish are good for brain health. Eating fish twice a week provides brain benefits. You'll want to make other dietary changes as well, such as cutting back on sugar and saturated fats, caffeine and alcohol while adding more nutrient-rich fruits and vegetables, the authors note.
Yoga Fish Pose
Yoga has long been touted as a good stress management tool, and the fish pose is one that is used to bring anxiety and stress levels down. To do the fish pose, you lie on your back. Inhale and lift your pelvis from the floor. Slide your hands below your bottom with your palms facing down. Keep your bottom resting on the backs of your hands throughout the pose. Also keep your elbows close to your sides. You can have either bent knees with feet on the floor or straighten your legs and press through your heels. Press your forearms against the floor as you inhale, then press your shoulder blades into your back. With your next inhale, lift your head and upper torso from the ground. Place your head on the ground. Depending on your back arch, you'll either rest your head's crown or the back of your head on the ground, though you put a minimal amount of weight on the head. Hold for 15 to 30 seconds.
