More than a 100-member-strong canine family has its forever home in DOBF's Maruthy Dog Shelter which extends over half an acre of land. Formerly known as Anand Chhaaya and later as Maruthi Animal Charitable Trust [MACT], Maruthy Dog Shelter is now managed by Dogs Our Best Friends [DOBF]. The Shelter provides a safe, clean haven and nutritious food for dogs unable to fend for themselves on the stre

et. Blind dogs, partially crippled dogs, motherless puppies, dogs with skin problems, abandoned pets, dogs with behavioural issues, all find their permanent place in the DOBF family. Ages of resident dogs may range at any given point, between a few months and seventeen years! The dogs are dewormed and vaccinated regularly. They are also taken to veterinary clinics for treatment when needed. Covered and open enclosures with wooden beds provide the dogs adequate space to rest and play. There are two medical treatment rooms as well as a store room and kitchen for dog food. Another large room and a second kitchen are used by the three-member-strong male residential Staff that takes care of daily chores of cooking, feeding, cleaning and washing. Volunteers devote time largely during weekends to work on various projects in the Shelter. Though resources are stretched and at times a logistical challenge, Dogs Our Best Friends does its best to safeguard the well-being of the canine family at Maruthy Dog Shelter.

How 6 little puppies healed a broken heart...

How 6 little puppies healed a broken heart...

A shelter is a lively place especially when it is home to more than a 120 dogs! 😊 And sometimes despite measures...accidents happen. We chose to look at young Dobby's pregnancy as a happy one.

Dobby is a very affectionate darling, with a lovely chocolate and light brown coat and the most gorgeous golden eyes. So when the scans confirmed that her puppies would arrive in the first week of December...we looked forward to seeing a brood of very beautiful little ones.

But life has its strange ways and with only about two weeks to delivery date ...Dobby's bulging tummy seemed to reduce in size. A couple of days later a brownish discharge which looked like old blood got us worried. While Dobby's blood report came out normal, her scan report was sad news for us...all six puppies had died. Some hormonal imbalance or infection or even Dobby jumping and hurting herself somehow could have caused this.

For Dobby's wellbeing it was critical to get the puppies removed and her surgery was scheduled the next morning after the scan. The Doctor was happy with the way the surgery went. He mentioned that she would be fine. Upon my asking he said that there would not be any psychological effects to worry about.

Dobby started coming round on the drive home. She even demanded a treat on the way and wandered around happily when we got back to the shelter.

The next day while working in the puppy enclosure I noticed Dobby looking in. We were taking care of pups of another rescue and I was worried Dobby might not be friendly with them once she got in. The staff reported the same thing in the afternoon...how Dobby was trying to come in.

By late evening I saw a small miracle when I went on my final round. Dobby had managed to get into the puppy enclosure. As I peeped into the big cage covered with blankets and tarpaulin- there she was curled up so sweetly snuggling with all the puppies!

In a flash it hit me. The way she had been looking...so longingly at the puppies. Somewhere, somehow she had understood that her little babies were gone and with all the love she had to give as a mother...she was reaching out to these little ones.

My heart felt so full. These darling dogs, all animals in fact...feel so tenderly for their little ones. They may not be able to express their feelings in words as we humans do...but they feel the pain ...the loss...

Dobby was on my mind a lot that night. And the next day brought a new miracle 😊 Dobby, tail and ears up had found happiness in her new children and they nuzzled up to her lovingly. Nature had brought little Dobby comfort and consolation that nothing else could have. 😊
