Dogs often end up spending months or years with us while their parents attend to commitments overseas or within India that may keep them away from their dog for a considerable length of time. Dog House is run by a resident family having dogs of their own and over 35 years' experience in caring for dogs personally. The family also does a lot of volunteer work for homeless dogs. We're all set to bid farewell to two of the most loved boys at Dog House. Major and Minor will leave us tomorrow after having spent close to two years with us. They're going to be sorely missed by us and their doggie friends here. These hunky boys came to us from far away and are now preparing for the long drive back :-).

We will miss watching Major run while Minor chills under a tree :-).

CALLING VOLUNTEERS FOR A LARGE ANIMAL SURGERY

We are looking to recruit ten male volunteers to assist a team of veterinarians with a large animal surgery that is to happen at Dog House near Red Hills, Chennai. The surgery is planned for a Sunday towards the end of April. We have yet to finalize a date but it could the 21st April or 28th April ( or 5th May if there are unexpected delays). We are looking at half a day's work starting early in the morning and volunteers will be paid by the hour. We are looking for committed individuals who will promise to show up and actually show up without making excuses at the last minute as this is a matter of life and death to an animal who is loved dearly.

What is expected of a volunteer:
1. There will be some heavy lifting to do. The patient is a pet pig weighing over 300 kilos. Once sedated, he will have to be lifted and moved using a stretcher, into the surgery room.
2. You will assist the vets during the surgery. If you're the kind that faints or vomits at the sight of blood, please don't sign up for this. The vets will need your help with holding the animal, passing surgical equipment, cleaning etc.
3. Commitment. Once we finalize the date and time and you sign up, you MUST be there. We don't want people who'd pull out at the last minute. This is a matter of life and death to a living being. If you have travel plans etc., please don't sign up for this.
4. Once we finalize a date, please free yourself up for the entire day. We anticipate half a day’s work but there could be surprises as this is a complicated surgery and may take more time. Volunteers will be paid appropriately.
5. You have to be here in the wee hours of the morning. We plan to operate as early as 6am.
6. If the surgery fails and the patient dies, we will need your assistance with burial. Machines will dig the grave but we will need you to assist with other aspects of paying our last respects to an animal who is deeply loved.

How do we deal with nervous dogs? We've seen that some dogs, especially Indies, are quite nervous when they come to board with us for the first time. Such dogs are a huge flight risk and need to be handled carefully. Their fear can instigate them to jump walls, fences and they're usually great escape artists. Dog House has a secure perimeter no dog can escape from. Nervous dogs take 24-48 hours to relax in a new environment, surrounded by unfamiliar people. We usually don't restrict them on a leash and let them roam our spaces until they eventually calm their nerves. In a few days, these dogs end up making friends with us.
