Another eye opening incident for all animal lovers and pet parents.

Another reason why ABC’s are so important. The life threatening condition Pappu had could have been easily prevented with a simple birth control procedure.

Pappu’s parents brought her to our OP unit one day because she was vomiting and not eating. We soon found that she was grievously unwell. Her uterus was infected, filled with pus (a condition called pyometra). Her abdomen was bloated so much with the accumulation of pus. An emergency surgery was must to save her in the nick of time.

Had they waited even a little longer, her uterus would have ruptured. The infection would also spread to other organs. The bladder, ligaments of the uterus, and abdominal fat would have all started getting infected. Hormonal imbalance caused the inner walls of the uterus to thicken, causing vulnerable environment for bacteria. In acute cases it can also lead to kidney issues.

Pappu’s surgery went ahead smoothly, and we were fortunate to save her just in time. Her post op care is ongoing, her parents bringing her for follow ups to our OP unit. Wishing Pappu a speedy recovery.

We have 12 abandoned pedigree dogs in our shelter.
They may have been treated with insignificance and discarded in their old life, but here at BMAD they are our children who are pampered and spoiled. We want to pamper them so much, that they would forget their past, and the nasty people who ditched them.

Help us enable them to live life king size at the shelter, until they find beautiful homes where they will be loved and cherished.

We are running short on their food supply! They all require Royal Canine Maxi as part of their daily meal.

The shelter requires over 50 kilos of this food every month. Please help us with the purchase! As you know, it is expensive, and it is difficult for us to sustain every month.

We have shared the Amazon link in our Bio. You could buy online and have it delivered to BMAD or buy from a local store and hand it over at the shelter.

Our address is:

Besant Memorial Animal Dispensary
Sairam Colony, Besant Nagar

Note: Please send us a message once you place the order, so that we can track. 🙏 Thank you very much. We need all of your support as always in making their life beautiful.

The feeling of being choked, strangled, even for a short while is simply unbearable.

Imagine being strangulated for weeks, abandoned, not able to eat or drink properly, with life slowly ebbing away.

Some sadistic person had tied the collar on this Labrador so tightly, that he was caught in a death like vice. Over time, with no one to help, the collar had cut through to his trachea.

Not able to eat, thin and emaciated, this is the thinnest Labrador we have ever seen.

He was rescued by a kind dog walker and brought to BMAD and is now undergoing treatment.

Not able to swallow or move his head freely, though despite his untold misery, he is amiable, docile and friendly. Not giving us even an inkling of the agony he is enduring.

Aptly named Joy, spreading happiness all around, simply happy to be with all of us, his pain and discomfort not withstanding.

We estimate his treatment to amount to Rs.12000. Your support and good wishes is crucial at this time for Joy’s recovery. Please click on the link in Bio to donate.

This month we saw too many cases of abandonment and mind numbing cruelty. Some we were able to save, however some of the injuries were far too extreme and they passed away shortly upon arrival.

We performed several amputation and fixation surgeries this month, that highlights the staggering number of road accident victims.

We had a farrier come in specially to maintain the hooves of our ponies recovering from injuries.

Our vets and managers always on their toes, with our OP unit bustling with activity as always, an ABC marathon and several emergency cases coming in.

We are grateful to all those who donated to support our shelter work, for the treatment of Maya, Bulbul and Aliya, donations for feeding our shelter animals during the festival season, as well as our virtual guardians who have virtually adopted a shelter animal. We could not have done this without you. You support has contributed to a positive change in the lives of innumerable animals.

Thank you and for choosing to provide for animals in need this year also, last year having sponsored water bowls for street animals, as part of your CSR initiative.

Leela palace has helped us revamp our inpatient unit by painting our treatment area, diagnostic room, storage room as well as our office area, making the entire building vibrant and bright.

It’s a delight for our vets, caretakers, volunteers and of course our patients enjoying this bright atmosphere.

They also donated linen, which we can repurpose and use for our animals, very useful during the rainy season coming up.

We are grateful to your thoughtful gesture. 🙏

Please help us purchase a B type oxygen cylinder that is larger in volume, for our dispensary. Oxygen cylinder is extensively used during surgeries, and during emergency situations for our inpatients as well as outpatients. We want to buy a larger size cylinder that has more capacity, to be kept in our inpatient unit. It would cost Rs.7000.

To contribute towards the purchase of a cylinder, please click on the link in our Bio. 🙏

All in a days work at BMAD. Two terrible mutilations requiring major surgeries.
One amputation of a badly mangled hind limb of a cat, and one enucleation (removal of the eyeball) on a kitten, since the eye had already been dislocated from its socket due to a head trauma.

Both surgeries have been completed and both cats are under the care of their respective rescuers.

Surgeries of this nature are common at BMAD and we are grateful to all our supporters for enabling us with the wherewithal and infrastructure to carry out such major surgeries time and again.

This dog was brought to our OP unit by her worried parents, because she was in extreme pain and discomfort caused by a mass on her front limb. She was not able to weight bear, because of the painful growth that had also affected some of her digits.

We planned for a surgery the next day, to excise the mass completely. The surgery went ahead smoothly, the mass we removed was at least 5 cms large, and weighed over 150 gms!

She must be relieved with this weight removed, giving her more freedom of movement, once the wound heals.

As we say in tumour removal philosophy, “a chance to cut is a chance to cure!”

They have got a miraculous chance to live and enjoy all the beautiful things in life.

Please reach out to us if you would like to show them how beautiful the world can be, and help them enjoy every moment of it!

25/07/2023

This male cat had a chronic non healing wound on the right side of his face, that had not healed over the past 2 months. He was not responding to routine wound management techniques.

The BMAD team performed a unique surgical procedure, first of its kind for the shelter.

We used the methodology of using a flap, which is an excellent method to close large wounds that do not heal in dogs and cats.

The wound was thoroughly cleaned and debrided. A caudal auricular axial pattern flap was placed to cover the wound and sutured.

In this unique surgical procedure the skin and underlying tissues along with its blood supply which will cover the length and breadth of the wound was separated from the area behind the base of the ear and rotated and placed to cover the wound entirely, and sutured in place.

The flap was very effective in facilitating complete closure of the wound and is a gold standard for non healing wound closures.

We are blessed to now have the ability to help this street animal with this specialised surgery that not all veterinarians can perform, thanks to our strong veterinary team.

We require all of your support with this life changing work. To contribute, please click on the link in our Bio.

Rudolph the Red Nosed Grey horse had a very shiny nose which was later surgically corrected by 😃.

Horses have an innate tendency to develop exuberant granulation of their wounds- known as 'proud flesh'. When left untreated, the granulation can sometimes metamorphosize into huge vascular masses that can often develop into perennial pus pockets or get infested with maggots, especially if they are not hygienically maintained. We came across one such case of a proud flesh mass in one of the beach horses in Chennai. This sturdy stallion had a 3 inch diameter globoid mass on his muzzle, that had been developing for the past 6 months.
Usually, proud flesh can be treated with topical copper sulphate application after which it will automatically regress in a matter of a few weeks.
This particular case called for surgical intervention.
A quick 32-minute procedure was carried out in BMAD under general anesthesia. The equine had a smooth recovery from anesthesia and will be ready for external suture removal in approximately 10 days, after apt antibiotic and anti inflammatory medication.
Though as an Animal Welfare organisation we discourage joy riding, we also acknowledge that it is the sole livelihood for a significant chunk of Chennai's population, and for many- it is all that they know.
For this very reason, we have assumed the responsibility of catering to the beach horses by providing them with free healthcare, regular check ups and even basic necessities like feed, halters and spike-free mouth bits.
Those horses that are poorly maintained are legally surrendered to the facility.
We strive to create a beach-horse community that remains as healthy and abuse-free as possible.

21/06/2023

4 Barn owl Chicks (Tyto Alba) were displaced from their nest in a construction site. They were rescued by the Tamil Nadu Forest Department ( HQ) range. They had tried to reunite the chicks with their parents but it wasn’t successful. They brought the chicks to BMAD for further treatment and rehabilitation. Barn owl chics are generally in different sizes since the lay their eggs in intervals. The last chic generally being the smallest and weakest generally find it hard to survive. We initially separated them so that we could monitor their food in take. Everyday our Team of Vets and Staff constantly monitored their food intake and their weights were noted. Barn owls are nocturnal and are very shy animals. We had to ensure minimal stress while handling but also ensure their progress at the same time. It was a challenge but our team managed to successfully raise them. After 5 weeks of monitoring, the chicks were showing signs and eagerness to Hunt. An old abandoned building was used as a soft release spot ,where these owls slowly started to hunt their prey. Barn owls are voracious hunters of rodents especially rats ans mice and they help in keeping our rodent population under control. After 6 weeks , they were successfully released back into the wild in the presence of forest department officials. Again a successful rehabilitation story and it was possible only with the support of our Wildlife Warden , Chennai . Check out the last picture and tell me how many owls you can spot ! We also want to thank Jayanthi Kallam of ARRC for their constant support and guidance.
