Dirty water is so called because it has dirt in it. Separate the dirt and the water is clean. Aquarium water also has dirt in it. Fishes can manage them until they reach permissible level. Corydoras are bottom dwelling scavenging fish, usually. They eat the food that reaches the floor of the tank. Different colors and patterns of corys are available. The thick scales of the fish make them suitable even for semi aggressive fish tank. The movement of corydoras as a group along the tank bottom is an eye-catching sight. It has whiskers to search the gravel. Being sensitive, the gravel should be soft enough for them to turn over. They can disrupt some of the vegetation if they are not strong rooted. A nice hardy fish to add to your tank.

Have you heard of something called Food Chain or Food Web or Circle of Life? All are interconnected. Each living organism is connected to other living organisms for food and survival. An insect feed on the microorganisms in the soil, a frog eats the insect, a snake eats the frog, a peacock eats the snake, a fox eats the peacock, and so on. Due to advancements in the human intelligence, (s)he has destroyed this balance in many ways. Being superior being, the onus is on the humans to correct the imbalance and act as a bridge. Thinking whether your guppy is worth the money you bought for? The main reasons for the cost of a guppy are the appearance, the aesthetic value in a tank, intensity of color, contrast colors and patterns, clear patterns, good shape, good finnage, activeness and most importantly the effort spent to grow the fish, transport it and condition it. The rarity of the fish is based on how much of the strain is upheld and also on how much offspring were born and survived. Want to set your pet fish or bird free? Throwing them into a pond or releasing them into the wild might not be a good idea. Know why... The pets that we keep are exotic (They belong to some other region or country). Which means they cannot survive in the wild. They will become prey to some predator. But, if they are able to survive and breed, they could become invasive and start troubling the native population. Soon, the native fish and birds deplete. For example, the sucker mouth fish from Brazil is introduced into the Indian rivers through pet discarding. They grow in numbers easily and eat the eggs of other Indian river fish. The Forest department of India is on the continuous watch for such exotic fishes and birds among pet shops and customers and has laid out ban on some fishes. Contact pet shops or store to trade your pets back, so that it does not affect the native bio diversity!

Aquatic Plants are controlled by lot of parameters. Unlike terrestrial plants, aquatic plants can modify themselves for the situation. Plants which require more lighting than what is given, tend to grow towards the light. In this case the stem becomes long. When enough light is given, they tend to grow bushy and grow to normal heights. Plants like lily grow leaves to the surface. If we keep cutting them down, they understand that they should not reach the surface and give a bushy experience by remaining at the bottom. When there is not enough space for the roots to expand, they grow new buddings at the root or leaves. Different minerals have different effects on the growth of the aquatic plants, and minerals and salts can be added directly to the water column for the leaves to absorb. Temperature, water movement, kind of substrate, depth of substrate, height of water column, type of light, etc., impact aquatic plant growth and the plants grow differently based on different conditions.

Is the water suitable for the type of fish in the aquarium? Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) is a measurement to determine the amount of salts and minerals dissolved in the water we use. Drinking water has a very low TDS < 300 ppm. Bore water or salt water will have higher TDS > 500 ppm. RO water has very less TDS, tap water a moderate TDS and bore water has higher TDS. Measure TDS before leaving fish in tank with a TDS meter. What does it mean? Freshwater fishes like discus, barbs, angels, tetras, central American cichlids etc like to live in water with low TDS < 300. Brackish water fishes like guppy, molly, s**t, puffer, mono angel, African cichlids, etc live in water with moderate TDS > 300. Marine fishes need a lot of TDS or hardness. More salt content results in the aquarium glass forming deposits of calcium and magnesium salts which are hard to remove. In this case regular cleaning of glass and heavy filtration is required.

How to stock African Cichlid fish such that they don't die? Use a 3 feet minimum sized tank. When stocking juvenile fishes (less than 1.5 inches), there are no restrictions. You can stock upto 50 fishes. When stocking semi adults (between 1.5 and 3 inches), they tend to show aggression. So, remove all decorations and rock work. Stock a minimum of 35 to 40 fishes. When stocking adult fishes, only 2 sets of fishes, one on either side of the tank. They will show a lot of aggression. They need a lot of hiding spots and space. Follow the image!
