Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park announces first release of Himalayan gorals!

In an effort to bolster the population of these endangered animals, four Himalayan gorals were released into Singalila National Park in Darjeeling district, as part of an augmentation programme led by the Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park (PNHZP) in collaboration with the state forest department.

The zoo is currently home to 33 gorals and plans to continue reintroducing them into the wild to help recover this species, which is found across the Himalayan region and is threatened by hunting for its meat.

Conservation Breeding at PNHZ Park

PNHZ Park is India’s largest high altitude zoo although categorized as a medium zoo. It was established in 1958. The Park is a specialized zoo housing species from the Eastern himalayan region. The Park is involved in the ex-situ conservation breeding of red panda, snow leopard, himalayan wolf etc, Himalayan newt, Blue sheep, Satyr Tragopan etc. The Park was the recipient of Earth Hero award from the Royal Bank of Scotland in 2014 for its efforts in ex-situ conservation.

The main objectives of the Park is Research, Education and Conservation. The Park also has two off display conservation breeding centres, the off display conservation breeding centre for red panda and snow leopard in Topkeydara and off display conservation breeding centre for herbivores and pheasants in Dowhill, Kurseong. These centres are closed to visitors.
