Who says virtual Animal Intervention Sessions are not effective?

We've been working for an institution that works closely with 'persons with mental illness' and their families. Since the pandemic our sessions have been virtual only but we have had an overwhelming response .

Benefits of virtual sessions :-

A. People who are otherwise scared of dogs also participate in virtual sessions.

B. More one on one engagement is possible.

C. Dogs are less stressed out as they participate in their own comfort space ( home office).

D. Families of the participants are also comfortable with patients engaging with dogs virtually.

Sometimes some changes happen for the best 👌

Happy birthday to@humansofcanines

I started HoC on the 25th of April in 2016. It started off as a mere page but this was my FIRST step to understanding and experiencing the power of the human-canine bond. .dogtraining held my hand 🙏

Today, as I hold Hamsini's hand to take her FIRST steps in life and watch her bond with dogs.. I wish to celebrate this long but enriching journey.

Cheers to the FIRST steps we all have taken in our respective journeys 🙂

Part II: Time spent with mothers goes beyond food and nourishment. Mothers play an important role in a child/puppy's social development. The weaning process is gradual and teaches the puppy critical communication skills required to interact with the world outside , which prepares the puppy to be independent.
In this picture you see a very important lesson that the human and the canine mother are teaching their children - PLAY!

ATTENTION : Nursing mothers in one frame !

Puppies depend on their mother’s milk during the first 5 weeks.
The mother's milk not only provides necessary nutrients for the puppies , they also learn to understand social communication from through the process . For example, biting when they should or shouldn’t, and how to behave appropriately with other animals and humans.

It is recommended that this process follow its natural course to obtain the best results and to avoid stress in the puppies and their mothers by separating the puppies from their mother's before 5-6 weeks.

What can you do as a dog lover ?

Ensure you bring a puppy home only after 6-8 weeks of their time with their mother.
Breeders often tend to separate the puppy much earlier saying people want 'younger cuter pups'. Let us as a community insist on letting the pups be with their mum longer.

A tribute to the girl who first made me experience ‘motherhood’.

Thank you Kajri for all the joy you spread as a puppy with your jhappi 🙂

Thank you for giving birth to the lovely Bheem Bageera Mowgli Chutki and Chulbuli

Your birthing experience was my first ever learning about dogs and motherhood amongst dogs .

I remember how you dug a pit to deliver your pups safely, nursed them regularly , would fetch them food , would growl at them during the weaning process . You even skipped feeding them when you were unwell . You’d trust me with your puppies and nursed them calmly sitting in our house .
How did you know all this ? I still wonder !

Today as a mother, whenever I experience any struggle I only think of you and how you braved it out and helped your puppies grow up to be healthy and independent.

I know you had to go , you were old and ailing but your life has been so inspiring to me.
I only wish and hope I become a mother like you - strong and wonderful!

I am so sad to say goodbye to you. Can’t imagine the milk booth without you . But you will always remain in my heart and I’ll always think of you as a happy mommy.

Rest in Peace Kajri !

Sharing a few of my favourite pictures with Kajri . I am so happy that my last picture with you has Hamsini in it ❤️

Thank you girl !! Come back soon .

🐕 Dogs and 👶 baby : How to ensure I spend enough time entertaining both ?

Having a baby and dogs in the house is pretty challenging. especially for first time parents. While you are still figuring out a routine with your baby, not spending quality time with your dogs also makes one feel guilty.

No matter how badly I want to take time out to be with the dogs , I am extremely tired doing baby duties that I'd rather sleep during freetime ( guilty again) .
So I worked out a solution .. I have started involving the dogs in my daily baby activities. Sharing one in this post.

Leo , my Golden Retriever loves water and so he joins the baby's bath time. He sits in the shower while we splash some water on him and the baby giggles and smiles watching him play.

* Leo gets some fun and mental stimulation
* Baby gets fun bath time

This activity is worth trying if you have a dog that loves water and is trained to sit and play.

PS: ADULT SUPERVISION IS REQUIRED

Let's control the human urge to treat babies and pets as siblings .

Speaking as a parent to dogs and now a baby, I can say that it's very important to understand that your child and your dog are two different species . Both have very different ways of communication and presuming that they'll share a 'human sibling-like' bond is slightly unfair.

1. It is wrong to expect the dog to 'adjust' to the changing environment with a new baby in the house ( think of the time you are taking to adjust).

2. While baby-dog introduction videos on social media seem very beautiful, a life with dogs and baby in the same house is very different.
One must work towards building the relationship but extremely slowly .

3. Murphy Leo were introduced to my baby after almost month. To ensure good hygiene, I do not allow them to lick her or use her toys and at the same time, I take time out to play and train them with her around . They never have to tie them on a lead or keep them locked in a room. I respect their boundary , they respect mine.

All the three are very special to me and yes Murphy Leo are her older furry brothers. They have a bond that's different from a human sibling bond which makes it even more special.

(Ps: I know things will change with a toddler)

My first online AAT session after a long maternity break ❤️

Yes , I was tired
Yes, I did not have time to dress well or comb my hair after nursing my Baby
Yes, I was very anxious to get back to an intense session - will I be able to conduct the session like before ?

BUT once I we started and I saw big smiles on my clients' face the moment they looked at Murphy Leo and me , I remembered the impact that dogs have had on them .
Animal Assisted Therapy works because dogs are non judgemental , then why should I judge or question myself ?
Both and I gave our best and that's all that mattered .

I am back to my baby now with a content heart ❤️

ALL IS WELL

Siblings day out !

Today, my daughter , Hamsini is 3 months old ..she has started noticing Murphy and Leo around her. While she still might not know the difference between humans and animals ..she is extremely comfortable around bark sounds and tail wags now .
Leo finds her cooing similar to his squeaky toys and Murphy is only interested in chilling with her. All in all the 'socialisation' is going well .

Posted • .marketing With a calling toward the social development sector and a drive to make an impact, Poorvaja Kumar wanted a career merging passion and profession.

When she lost her dog, Choco, she realised just how important pets are as a companion, therapist, and friend. And she took the leap. After training as a canine trainer and animal-assisted therapist, she is now the founder of organization.

Her unconventional path - from mental health to the development sector to dealing with animals has had many twists and turns.

When Poorvaja started working on the field, facing social issues upfront, she saw the subtle gender bias in the people around her. Even when tackling the Herculean work of monitoring NGOs across India, she struggled to be regarded seriously by men as a petite woman. She was dismissed, reduced to stereotypes, and subjected to backhand comments.

Despite the difficulties, Poorvaja forged forward and focused on her growth. "The more assured I got about my dreams and passion...I was so engaged in self-development that all the voices I constantly heard either stopped, or I just ignored them."

According to her, Women's Day should celebrate an individual making her own choices and unapologetically prioritizing her own wellbeing over anything else. And today, she stands as a role model for what she believes in.
