Iguanas are large lizards that can range from 1.2 to 2.0 m (4 to 6.5 ft) in length, including their tails. They possess a dewlap and a row of elongated scales running from the midline of their necks down to their tails. Iguanas have varying types of scales covering different areas of their body, for example, some large, round tuberculate scales are scattered around the lateral region of the neck among smaller, overlapping scales.

Iguanas have keen vision and can see shapes, shadows, colors, and movement at long distances. Their visual acuity enables them to navigate through crowded forests and to locate food. They employ visual signals to communicate with other members of the same species.

Like most reptiles, an iguana has a three-chambered heart with two atria, one ventricle, and two aortae with a systemic circulation. The muscles of an iguana are very light in color due to the high proportion of fast-twitch, glycolytic muscle fibers (type A). These A fibers are not very vascularized and are low in myoglobin, giving them their pale look. This high density of A fibers allows iguanas to move very quickly for a short period of time, which facilitates short bursts of movement, but is inefficient for long duration movement, since cellular respiration in A fibers is anaerobic.

Several species of lizards, including the iguanas, have a pale scale towards the back of their heads marking the parietal eye. This organ is sensitive to changes in illumination and sends signals to the pineal gland noting the change between day and night. A photopigment commonly found in the lamprey, known as parapinopsin, is also found in the iguana, and is sensitive to ultraviolet light and aids in the signaling between day and night.

Iguanas have developed an herbivorous lifestyle, foraging exclusively on vegetation and foliage.[14] To acquire, process, and digest plant matter, herbivorous lizards must have a higher bite force relative to their size in comparison to carnivorous or omnivorous reptiles. The skull of the iguana has undergone modifications resulting in a strong bite force and efficient processing of vegetation, according to one study.

The nanday parakeet (formerly called black-hooded parakeet) is not a quiet bird, but it is a popular pet. They are affectionate toward their owners and talented talkers, capable of learning several words and short phrases. It's a medium-sized parrot that is also very intelligent and thrives on being taught fun tricks that are sure to entertain.
COMMON NAMES: Nanday conure, black-hooded parakeet
SCIENTIFIC NAME: Nandayus nenday (There had been some debate if it belonged to the conure genus of Aratinga. It is now classified in the Nandayus genus with a number of subspecies.)
ADULT SIZE: 11 and 12 inches, weighing about five ounces
LIFE EXPECTANCY: 20-plus years

This bird has a vast natural habitat in South America that includes Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, and Paraguay. Their "nanday" name derives from the indigenous name for the bird.

They're most likely to be seen in flocks of at least 10 birds and prefer the natural food sources provided by agriculture. In the wild, you're more likely to hear their distinct call before seeing the birds because their green color blends well into the landscape.

Over the years, pet nandays were released to the wild. Flocks of these feral birds are found near metropolitan areas like Los Angeles, California, and Miami and St. Petersburg in Florida. They're a surprisingly hardy bird, and feral populations are found as far north as Canada.

The black-hooded parakeet is a brilliant, outgoing bird. Their size, bright colors, ability to learn tricks and talk, as well as their social skills, make them a popular attraction for bird shows. One of their best-known tricks is retrieving dollar bills from audience members then finding that same person to return the money to.

These birds are curious and will explore their environment. They can be restless at times, though you'll also find that they enjoy moderate petting, and a snuggle session when they get sleepy. One of their more peculiar habits is falling asleep on their back with their feet sticking straight up in the air (as if playing dead).

Though generally affectionate, this bird has a strong beak and will use it on occasion.
Speech and Vocalizations
Nandays call out early in the morning and later in the afternoon, an instinct they use in the wild. They can also be quite chatty when perching, especially if given a person or another bird to talk to. If you are interested in a similar bird that is not as talkative.
If they learn to talk, the black-hooded parakeet will have a slightly raspy voice that does not have the clarity of larger parrots. Some of these birds can develop a vocabulary of about 20 words.
Black-hooded
This species is monomorphic, so you will not be able to tell males and females apart. They can be sexed with a DNA test or a surgical sexing procedure.

My Greeny..

COMMON NAME: Green Iguana
SCIENTIFIC NAME: Iguana iguana
TYPE: Reptiles
DIET: Herbivore
AVERAGE LIFE SPAN IN THE WILD: 20 years
SIZE: 6.6 feet
WEIGHT: 11 pounds
SIZE RELATIVE TO A 6-FT MAN:

Green, or common, iguanas are among the largest lizards in the Americas, averaging around 6.5 feet long and weighing about 11 pounds.

They are also among the most popular reptile pets in the United States, despite being quite difficult to care for properly. In fact, most captive iguanas die within the first year, and many are either turned loose by their owners or given to reptile rescue groups.

The green iguana’s extensive range comprises the rain forests of northern Mexico, Central America, the Caribbean Islands, and southern Brazil. They spend most of their lives in the canopy, descending only infrequently to mate, lay eggs, or change trees.

In Captivity as Pets
They are also among the most popular reptile pets in the United States, despite being quite difficult to care for properly. In fact, most captive iguanas die within the first year, and many are either turned loose by their owners or given to reptile rescue groups.

Behavior
Primarily herbivores, iguanas are active during the day, feeding on leaves, flowers, and fruit. They generally live near water and are excellent swimmers. If threatened, they will leap from a branch, often from great heights, and escape with a splash to the water below. They are also tough enough to land on solid ground from as high as 40 feet and survive.

My Rose and Jack

The rose-breasted cockatoo, best known by its native aboriginal Australian name "galah," is the perfect parrot species for a pet owner who likes to interact frequently with a pet bird. Extremely intelligent and enormously fond of humans, this pretty pink bird can readily learn to say many words and do complicated tricks with regular training. This hardy bird can live in some of the more extreme areas of Australia.

COMMON NAMES: Rose-breasted cockatoo, galah, galah cockatoo, pink and gray cockatoo, crimson-breasted cockatoo, roseate cockatoo, galah parrot

ADULT SIZE: 12 to 15 inches in length, weighing 10 to 14 ounces
LIFE EXPECTANCY: Can live to 70 years in captivity; most commonly will live 40 or so years

Origin and History
The galah is native to Australia, where it can be found in open grasslands and over much of the country. It has self-established in Tasmania. Galah cockatoos travel in large flocks, often in groups that also include sulfur-crested cockatoos. They will mate with other species of cockatoos.

If you are interested in owning a galah, make sure that you have plenty of free time to spend with your pet. It is a sensitive bird, requiring a lot of attention and interaction from its owners. As a flock-dwelling bird by nature, if its adopted human flockmate ignores it, the rose-breasted cockatoo can become depressed, angry, and destructive.

Meet our pet house member

Senegal parrot is part of a family of birds well known for their outstanding pet quality, quietness and remarkably calm temperament. Originating in Africa (hence the name “Senegal”), these birds are the most common of the Poicephalus, and are fairly easy to find in pet shops. They are prized for their good nature and the fact that their price is far lower than their Poicephalus cousins, making them a good choice for the person wanting a “larger” bird.

The Senegal Parrot, about 9 inches long, isn’t a “flashy” bird, like some other companion parrots of the same size. They are mostly dark green and brownish-gray with an iridescent green throat, orange thighs, with a yellow chest. The beak and feet are black, and the eye is a light yellow-orange, set off by the darker gray of the face. They don’t need all the “flash.” They are beautiful as they are, with a great personality to match.

The Senegal parrot inhabits a large range in west Africa, migrating within its range depending on the availability of native fruits, seeds and blossoms.

Senegal parrots can be very sweet, wanting nothing more than to sit on your shoulder all day. They tend to become very attached to “their” humans, and don’t really need another Senegal to keep them entertained. Senegals will appreciate as much attention as you can give. Because this bird will come to adore you, it is best to return that affection every day, or you will risk having a dejected bird.

Senegal parrots are not the chattiest of species, though some individuals can learn to talk quite well, acquiring a vocabulary of dozens of words. They are not screamers, tending more toward whistling and clucking. A Senegal will not get you in trouble with your neighbors.

Senegal parrots live an average of approximately 25–30 years in the wild, and have been known to live for 50 years in captivity.
