THE TALE OF CHOCO
An adult female Labrador retriever dog named CHOCO of Mrs. Subarna Roy was presented at the Clinic with the symptom of depression, loss of appetite and non-specific pain throughout whole body. The companion animal was earlier administered with pain killers by the pet parents. The pet was provided with symptomatic medications and undergone some blood tests. Meanwhile she started excreting blood-tinged discharges in scanty, and the parents thought, she is obviously in oestrous (coming into her periods). However within next 2 days she started secreting profuse blood-tinged discharges from va**na. The treating specialist was consulted again immediately and was prescribed with very high graded antibiotics by infusions and other medications considering the fact that she is suffering from OPEN PYOMETRA. She became highly dehydrated and Plasma extenders were administered to save her life. The course was continued for next 3 days with no remarkable improvements in her, rather she developed dyspnoea (respiratory distress). The treating specialist decided that it’s a clear-cut case of surgical intervention. Blood reports revealed she was positive for a haemoprotozoa called Ehrlichia canis, and high creatinine level with leucocytosis.
Inevitable crucial decision of surgery by mid-ventral laparotomy for Ovario-hysterectomy, under general anaesthesia became complicated and at high risk. Further superimposed risk was that she is a known case of progressive Lipoma (benign tumours of fats on various parts of the body). The treating specialist’s determination was very strong and bold.
Choco was operated next day in the evening for about 03 hours with that prevailing risk under costly and latest anaesthetic protocol and oxygen support throughout. Her uterus was weighing after removal was 3.2 kgs, and completely filled with pus. The ovaries had multiple Corpus Leutium, which were secreting all hormones of pregnancy, considering the pus filled enlarged uterus as of conceived one.
The surgery was perfect with very minimal blood loss. Choco went home at 11:30 PM on that night. She was in very pain next day and thereafter started recovering from day after. Apart from injections, oral medications for Ovario-hysterectomy, a safeguard for Canine Ehrlicosis was also started. Choco is gradually recovering, eating well, walking and after all undulating her tail on us with adored. Hope Choco will recover completely within a short while.
Thank you Subarna mam for your trust on our Clinic and above all the Clinic’s treating specialist.
