THE TALE OF CHOCO
An adult female Labrador retriever dog named CHOCO of Mrs. Subarna Roy was presented at the Clinic with the symptom of depression, loss of appetite and non-specific pain throughout whole body. The companion animal was earlier administered with pain killers by the pet parents. The pet was provided with symptomatic medications and undergone some blood tests. Meanwhile she started excreting blood-tinged discharges in scanty, and the parents thought, she is obviously in oestrous (coming into her periods). However within next 2 days she started secreting profuse blood-tinged discharges from va**na. The treating specialist was consulted again immediately and was prescribed with very high graded antibiotics by infusions and other medications considering the fact that she is suffering from OPEN PYOMETRA. She became highly dehydrated and Plasma extenders were administered to save her life. The course was continued for next 3 days with no remarkable improvements in her, rather she developed dyspnoea (respiratory distress). The treating specialist decided that it’s a clear-cut case of surgical intervention. Blood reports revealed she was positive for a haemoprotozoa called Ehrlichia canis, and high creatinine level with leucocytosis.
Inevitable crucial decision of surgery by mid-ventral laparotomy for Ovario-hysterectomy, under general anaesthesia became complicated and at high risk. Further superimposed risk was that she is a known case of progressive Lipoma (benign tumours of fats on various parts of the body). The treating specialist’s determination was very strong and bold.
Choco was operated next day in the evening for about 03 hours with that prevailing risk under costly and latest anaesthetic protocol and oxygen support throughout. Her uterus was weighing after removal was 3.2 kgs, and completely filled with pus. The ovaries had multiple Corpus Leutium, which were secreting all hormones of pregnancy, considering the pus filled enlarged uterus as of conceived one.
The surgery was perfect with very minimal blood loss. Choco went home at 11:30 PM on that night. She was in very pain next day and thereafter started recovering from day after. Apart from injections, oral medications for Ovario-hysterectomy, a safeguard for Canine Ehrlicosis was also started. Choco is gradually recovering, eating well, walking and after all undulating her tail on us with adored. Hope Choco will recover completely within a short while.
Thank you Subarna mam for your trust on our Clinic and above all the Clinic’s treating specialist.

An adult Mongrel dog was presented at the Clinic in the afternoon, on very emergency with profuse bleeding from nostrils. The Vet was consulted over video call immediately and as per the Veterinary emergent and critical care advice, the treatment for emergency care and management was initiated for continuous 3 hours at the Clinic to stop bleeding ( Epistaxis) and restore body condition and to prevent the dog from collapsing as a consequent to haemodynamic shock.
Later in the evening the poor creature was thoroughly examined by the treating specialist of the Clinic, and found to be suffering from sub-normal temperature, severe anaemia, third degree dehydration, may be due to huge blood loss from nostrils.
Further advanced treatment was prescribed with certain minimal blood tests to confirm the diagnosis. The final prescription was advocated on receipt of blood test reports and that continued for 3 weeks.
The dog is completely cured by now, the pet-parent is very happy and satisfied with the emergency care and treatment protocol.
Paws and Tails at Kalyani is promised to take care likewise in all cases in future.

A LITTLE PUP’S STORY
A stray Indie pup, aged less than a month, weighing only a kilogram was presented at the Clinic on emergency at about 6 PM on 12.05.2023, with a history of severe bite injury by other strays. The pup was clinically examined and found in severe pain, bleeding from shoulder region and in shocked condition. Immediately life-saving medications were administered, as per medical advice. Dr. Sujit Das was called in immediately, and on detailed examination it was noticed that, the left fore shoulder blade (Scapula) is longitudinally broken apart completely, with damage of surrounding muscles and a lacerated skin wound. Anaesthesia for such a small pup in shocked condition was critical. However the faith of the kind-hearted Priyanka, from Kanchrapara was immense on the Clinic and with her consent decision of general anaesthesia was made. The scapula broken blade was brought in apposition, torn muscles were repaired and the wound was closed aseptically. The pup undergone uneventful recovery and handed over to Priyanka, with a strong hope for the pup to lead a normal long life ahead. Have faith, patience and believe in the God.

A female German Shepherd Dog, named LILA, aged only 11 months was presented at the Clinic with a history of unintentional mating by a deshi (Mongrel) dog about 2 months back in her first periods (Oestrus). The pet-parents were very anxious in this very new, inexperienced and embarrassed in this situation. They were given all sorts of mental support and were advised to keep patience. The Digital X-ray of the patient revealed 5 (Five) foetuses in the womb. It was expected considering her structure and tender age that she may not whelp naturally, and advised to wait for 3-4 days. But no signs of whelping noticed till then. Immediately the medications for increasing foetal lungs surfactants was initiated and was operated by mid-ventral Caesarean Section by Dr. Sujit Das to deliver 5 ( Five) live pups. All the best LILA.
