সপরিবারে নেপাল থেকে প্রথমবার কলকাতায় ঘুরতে এসেছেন কুশল শর্মা। আজ সকালেই কলকাতায় পৌঁছে দুপুরে তাঁরা ট্যাক্সি চেপে ফুলের বাজার ঘুরতে বেরিয়েছিলেন। ট্যাক্সি থেকে নেমে শ্রী শর্মা পকেট থেকে আইফোন বার করতে গিয়ে দেখেন, ফোন নেই। ট্যাক্সিতে পকেট থেকে বের করে সিটের ওপর রেখেছিলেন, তিলোত্তমাকে চাক্ষুষ করতে করতে বেখেয়ালে নামার সময় সঙ্গে নিতে ভুলে গেছেন। ততক্ষণে ট্যাক্সিও দৃষ্টির বাইরে। দামি ফোন তো বটেই, কিন্তু তার চেয়েও বড় কথা, ফোনেই রয়েছে ভ্রমণ নির্দেশিকা, সমস্ত দরকারি ডকুমেন্ট, ও স্থানীয় পরিচিতদের নম্বর এবং ঠিকানা।

একে টুরিস্ট, তার ওপর কলকাতায় প্রথমবার, কিভাবে ফোন ফেরত পাবেন বুঝতে না পেরে দিশেহারা হয়ে একে-তাকে জিজ্ঞাসা করতে থাকেন তিনি। বেলা দেড়টায় মহাত্মা গান্ধী রোডে কর্তব্যরত হাওড়া ব্রিজ ট্রাফিক গার্ডের ওসি, ইনস্পেক্টর শৌভিক চক্রবর্তী ও সার্জেন্ট বিদ্যুৎ বিশ্বাসের নজরে পড়ে মিঃ শর্মার কার্যকলাপ। সব জেনে ফোন উদ্ধারে লেগে পড়েন দুজনে। শ্রী শর্মা কেবল ট্যাক্সির শেষ চারটে নম্বর ও চালকের চেহারার বর্ণনা দিতে পারেন। এটুকুই যথেষ্ট ছিল। শুরু হয় সোর্স এবং ওয়ারলেসে মারফত খোঁজ। বেশ খানিকক্ষণ চেষ্টার পর টেলিফোন ভবনের কাছে ধরা যায় সেই ট্যাক্সিকে। চালককে হাওড়া ব্রিজ ট্রাফিক গার্ডের অফিসে আসতে বলা হয়, এবং পিছনের সিটের তলা থেকে উদ্ধার হয় আইফোন।

কলকাতা ট্রাফিক পুলিশের তাৎক্ষণিক পদক্ষেপে এত অল্প সময়ের মধ্যে মূল্যবান সম্পত্তি খুঁজে দেওয়ার জন্য অশেষ ধন্যবাদ জ্ঞাপন করেছেন শ্রী শর্মা এবং তাঁর স্ত্রী। বিদেশী অতিথিদের সাহায্য করতে পেরে খুশি আমরাও।

Kushal Sharma, a Nepali citizen, is on his first visit to Kolkata with his family. Having landed this morning, they were visiting the flower market near Howrah Station in a taxi, but after they got off, Mr Sharma realised he had left his iPhone behind. Apart from being an expensive phone, it also contained several valuable documents and important particulars such as their tour itinerary, and details of local contacts. By then, the taxi had vanished, and a panic-stricken Mr Sharma began asking random passersby for help.

Around 1.30 pm, his frantic behaviour came to the notice of Inspector Souvik Chakraborty, OC Howrah Bridge Traffic Guard, and Sergeant Bidyut Biswas. On learning of the situation, they swung into action immediately. Mr Sharma could only remember the last four digits of the taxi’s registration number and what the driver looked like. This was enough. Aided by source information and wireless messages, the taxi was finally traced to a location near Telephone Bhavan, and the driver was asked to report to Howrah Bridge Traffic Guard. Happily, the phone was retrieved from underneath the rear seat. Overwhelmed at the prompt assistance provided by Kolkata Traffic Police, Mr and Mrs Sharma have thanked us wholeheartedly. We are happy that our international guests will take back fond memories of our city.
