ফিরে ‘আশা’
মাধ্যমিক পরীক্ষার শেষ দিন, ২০১২ সাল। পরীক্ষার পর তার ‘বয়ফ্রেন্ড’ রুহুল কুদ্দুস গাজির কথায় শিয়ালদা গামী ট্রেনে ওঠে বসিরহাটের বাসিন্দা ১৬ বছরের এক কিশোরী। পথে কোল্ড ড্রিংক খাওয়ানোর ছুতো করে ঘুমের ওষুধ খাইয়ে তাকে অচৈতন্য করে দেয় কুদ্দুস, যার পর তাকে সে নিয়ে যায় কলকাতার এক যৌনপল্লীতে, যেখানে ২৫ হাজার টাকার বিনিময়ে ‘বিক্রি’ হয়ে যায় সেই কিশোরী।
দুঃস্বপ্নের শুরু সেই থেকেই। দুদিনের মধ্যেই যৌনপল্লী থেকে পালিয়ে কোনোভাবে নিজের গ্রামে ফিরে যায় মেয়েটি, কিন্তু সেখানে ইতিমধ্যেই কুদ্দুস এবং তার বন্ধু মহঃ ইসমাইল মন্ডল তার নামে কুৎসা রটিয়ে তাকে ‘যৌনকর্মী’ প্রতিপন্ন করে দিয়েছে। মহঃ ইসমাইল মন্ডলও কিশোরীর ওপর যৌন নির্যাতন করে। ঘরে-বাইরে কার্যত ব্রাত্য এবং মরিয়া কিশোরী এরপর কাছেরই একটি গ্রামের এক যুবকের কাছ থেকে বিয়ের প্রস্তাব গ্রহণ করে, তবে সেখানেও তার নামে কুৎসা ছড়ানোয় বিয়ের দুদিনের মধ্যেই শ্বশুরবাড়ি ছাড়তে হয় তাকে।
যখন আর সত্যিই কোথাও যাওয়ার নেই, তখন তাকে কারখানায় কাজ করার প্রস্তাব দেয় স্বপন রক্ষিত, দাবী করে যে তার বিস্কুটের কারখানা আছে। কিন্তু স্বপন এবং তার স্ত্রী পাপিয়া রক্ষিত তাকে বিক্রি করে দেয় পবিত্র বালা নামে দিল্লির এক বাসিন্দার কাছে, এবার দাম ওঠে কয়েক লক্ষ টাকা। দিল্লিতেই তাকে যৌনকর্মী হিসেবে কাজ করতে বাধ্য করে পবিত্র, যদিও কিছুদিন পর তাকে দিল্লি থেকে কলকাতায় ফিরিয়ে নিয়ে এসে বাগুইআটির বাসিন্দা সুমিত সেনের হাতে তুলে দেয় স্বপন, সেখানেও সেই একই পেশায় কাজ করতে থাকে সে।
দুঃস্বপ্নের অবসান ঘটে ২০১৩ সালের সেপ্টেম্বর মাসে, যখন পুলিশের ‘রেইড’ চলাকালীন অবশেষে উদ্ধার হয় সেই কিশোরী, এবং তার অভিযোগের ভিত্তিতে শুরু হয় ঘটনার তদন্ত, নেতৃত্বে গোয়েন্দা বিভাগের অ্যান্টি-হিউম্যান ট্রাফিকিং শাখার তদানীন্তন সাব-ইনস্পেকটর তন্দ্রিমা গুপ্ত (বর্তমানে ইনস্পেকটর তথা ওসি, স্পেশ্যাল জুভেনাইল পুলিশ ইউনিট)। ২০১৩ সালের সেপ্টেম্বর থেকে ২০১৪ সালের ফেব্রুয়ারির মধ্যে বসিরহাট, কলকাতা, এবং দিল্লি থেকে গ্রেফতার হয় কুদ্দুস, ইসমাইল, পাপিয়া, পবিত্র, এবং সুমিত।
বিচারপর্ব শেষ হয়েছে গত ১৮ মে ২০২৩। পাঁচ অভিযুক্তকেই ‘দ্য প্রোটেকশন অফ চিলড্রেন ফ্রম সেক্সুয়াল অফেন্সেস’ (POCSO) আইন ও হিউম্যান ট্রাফিকিং প্রিভেনশন আইনের আওতায় যাবজ্জীবন কারাদণ্ডের সঙ্গে পাঁচ লক্ষ টাকা জরিমানার আদেশ দিয়েছেন মাননীয় সিটি সেশনস কোর্টের অন্তর্ভুক্ত বিশেষ পকসো আদালত।
A dawn of hope
In 2012, a 16-year-old resident of Basirhat was writing her last Madhyamik exam when a young man named Ruhul Kuddus Gazi, who she thought of as her boyfriend, tricked her into getting on a Sealdah-bound train with him, tricked her into having a cold drink laced with sleeping pills, and then transported her to a red light area in Kolkata where he sold her to a brothel owner for Rs 25,000.
From that day onward, her life spiralled into a nightmare as she managed to flee the brothel after just two days, but was ostracised by her family and fellow villagers for being a ‘sex worker’, a rumour that Kuddus and his friend Md Ismail Mondal spread about her. Md Ismail Mondal also sexually exploited her. Desperate for a way out, she accepted a proposal of marriage from a young man who lived in a nearby village, but the rumours chased her there too, and she was forced to leave her husband’s home barely two days after the marriage.
With nowhere to go, she accepted an offer of employment from Swapan Raksh*t, who claimed he owned a biscuit factory. Instead, Swapan and his wife Papiya Raksh*t sold her to a man named Pabitra Kumar Bala in Delhi for a few lakh rupees, and Bala forced her into the flesh trade. Swapan then brought her back to Kolkata and handed her over to Sumit Sen, a resident of Baguiati, who similarly forced her to carry on in the trade.
Her nightmare finally ended when she was rescued during a police raid in September 2013 and sent to live in a home for victims of human trafficking. On the basis of her complaint, a team led by investigating officer Inspector Tandrima Gupta (then with the Anti-Human Trafficking Unit, Detective Department, and presently OC, Special Juvenile Police Unit) also arrested Kuddus, Ismail, Papiya, Pabitra, and Sumit between September 2013 and February 2014 from multiple locations in Basirhat, Kolkata and Delhi.
Following trial, a Special Pocso Court of the City Sessions Court delivered a sentence of life imprisonment along with fine of Rs 5 lakhs on May 18 2023 for all five accused under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and for Human Trafficking Prevention Act.
