A macaw was presented with a fracture in the leg( tibia) .The owner was so concerned about the bird since recently she was hospitalized for severe weakness and debility.External fracture management was not a good option because of the overiding fracture fragments and powerful beaks of macaws.After discussion with owner ,we opted for gas anesthesia and closed pinning ( with out opening the leg muscle ,steel pin,IM pin introduced to correct the misaligned fracture segments).Macaws are famous for there powerful beaks,so we opted for closed pinning inorder to avoid self mutilation from beaks.Gaseous anesthesia is so safe in birds especially in debilitated birds . Anesthesia recovery was good and recovered with in 15 min.Hope the fracture will heal in another 2 weeks time.
