മെയ് മാസത്തിലെ ഉച്ചവെയിലിൽ പൊള്ളിനിൽക്കുമ്പോളും, തൻ്റെ ചുവട്ടിലെ ഇത്തിരികുഞ്ഞൻമാരായ ജാതി തൈകൾക്ക് എന്നും തണുപ്പും, ജീവനുമേകുന്ന കാവുകാട്ടു ഗാർഡൻസിലെ ഏറ്റവും മുതിർന്ന ഒരംഗത്തെ പരിചയപ്പെടുത്തട്ടെ. 'വാളിപ്ലാവ്' എന്നാണ് ഞങ്ങൾ ബഹുമാന പുരസരം ഈ വൃക്ഷവര്യനെ അഭിസംബോധനചെയ്യാറ്!. തലമുറകൾക്കു മുൻപേ അത് അങ്ങിനെ തന്നെ ആണ്. എൻ്റെ വലിയ ചാച്ചൻറെ ഓർമകളുടെ ചെറുപ്പത്തിലും വാളിപ്ലാവിനു ഒരു മാറ്റവും ഇല്ലായിരുന്നു എന്നാണ് പറഞ്ഞു കേട്ടിരിക്കുന്നത്. അതിനാൽതന്നെ അതിൻ്റെ പ്രായം അനുമാനിക്കുക പ്രയാസം.

കുട്ടികളായിരുന്ന ഞങ്ങൾക്ക് വാളിപ്ലാവിൻറെ ചുവട്ടിൽ ഒറ്റയ്ക്കുപോകാൻ അനുവാദം ഇല്ലായിരുന്നു. വിഷപ്പാമ്പുകളുടെ സാന്നിധ്യം തന്നെയാണ് കാരണം. എന്നും തണുപ്പു പുതഞ്ഞ ഒരു പ്രത്യേക ജൈവവ്യവസ്ഥയായിരുന്നു അതിൻ്റെ ചുവട്ടിൽ. നിറയെ മഷിത്തണ്ടുചെടികൾ വളർന്നിരുന്ന പ്ലാവിൻചുവട്ടിലെ പരീക്ഷണ നിരീക്ഷണങ്ങളിൽ നിരവധി തവണ വെളുത്ത പാമ്പിൻ പടങ്ങൾ കണ്ടു പേടിച്ചതോർക്കുന്നു. എങ്കിലും, എന്നും ആ പ്ലാവിൻചുവടു പ്രിയപ്പെട്ടതായിരുന്നു.

ഒരിക്കൽ പ്ലാവിൻറെ ഏതോ പോടിൽ കൂടുകൂട്ടിയിരുന്ന കോൽതേൻ എടുക്കാനായി പണിക്കാർ ഏരം പുകച്ചതും , ആരുമറിയാതെ അണയാതിരുന്ന ഒരു തീപ്പൊരി പ്ളാവിന്റെ ആ ഏരം വെന്തുവെണ്ണീറാക്കിയതും, അതു കടയ്ക്കൽവച്ച് ഇരിഞ്ഞു വീണതും ഞാനോർക്കുന്നു.

തായ്ത്തടിയുടെ ഒരു ഭാഗംമുഴുവൻ വലിയ പോടാണ്. അതിൽ മൂന്നുനാലാൾക്കു സുഖമായികയറിയിരിക്കാം. കുട്ടിക്കാലത്ത് വല്യമ്മച്ചിയുടെ മടിയിൽ ഇരുന്നു കേട്ടിട്ടുള്ള നിരവധി കഥകളിലൊന്നിലെ ലോകാവസാനത്തിന്റെ വിവരണത്തിൽ ആദ്യം ഞാനല്പം പേടിച്ചുപോയെങ്കിലും എന്റെ മനസിലെത്തിയ ഉപായമായിരുന്നു, ലോകം അവസാനിക്കുമ്പോൾ ഞാൻ ഓടിപ്പോയി വാളിപ്ലാവിൻറെ പൊത്തിലൊളിക്കും എന്നത്.

തന്റെ വലുപ്പത്തിനും പക്വതയ്കും യോജിച്ച ഫലങ്ങൾ നല്കാൻ വാളിപ്ലാവെന്നും ഉത്സുകനാണ്. എല്ലാവർഷവും ഇടതടവില്ലാതെ രുചിയുള്ള വലിയ ചക്കകൾ തന്നുകൊണ്ടേയിരിക്കുന്നു. പ്ലാവിന്റെ എത്ര തുഞ്ചത്തുള്ള ചക്കയും ഇടുന്ന ധൈര്യശാലികളായ വിദഗ്ദ്ധ മരംകയറ്റക്കാർ അന്നുണ്ടായിരുന്നു. ഏറ്റവും മുകളിലെ കുഞ്ഞേരത്തിൽവരെ വലിയ ചക്കകൾ ഉണ്ടാവുകയും, അവ ഓരോ വർഷവും അങ്ങിനെതന്നെ മുന്നേറുകയും ചെയ്യുമ്പോൾ, വാളിപ്ലാവും ചക്കയിടുന്ന ആളുമായി ഒരു നിശബ്ദ മത്സരം നടന്നിരുന്നോ എന്നൊരു സംശയം!

ആകാശംമുട്ടെയുള്ള വാളിപ്ലാവിന്റെ നില്പിൽ അസൂയ പൂണ്ടിട്ടൊ എന്തോ, ഒരു ഇടവപ്പാതി മഴയിൽ വെട്ടിയ ഇടിമിന്നലിൽ പ്ലാവിന്റെ ഒരു പ്രധാന ശിഖിരം തകർന്നു പോയി. തന്റെ താൻപോരായ്മയും, പരിചയസമ്പത്തും കൊണ്ടാണോ അതോ തന്റെ സമയം ഇനിയും ബാക്കിയുള്ളതുകൊണ്ടോ എന്നറിയില്ല, ഞങ്ങൾ ഭയപ്പെട്ടതുപോലെ തായ്ത്തടിക്ക് കേടുപാടുകൾ ഒന്നും തന്നെ സംഭവിച്ചില്ല. ആരോഗദൃഢഗാത്രനായി തന്റെ ചുവട്ടിൽ നടക്കുന്ന എല്ലാ കലാപരിപാടികളും സസൂഷ്മം വീക്ഷിച്ചുകൊണ്ടു വിരാജിയ്ക്കുകയാണ് വാളിപ്ലാവിപ്പോഴും.
