Dibrugarh: The Sivasagar administration has banned pork-related activities in the district to control the outbreak of African swine fever (ASF).
In an order issued Thursday, DM Aayush Garg announced a complete prohibition on the sale, transportation and slaughter of pigs and pig products across Sivasagar. The stringent measure was taken following the identification of two villages — Ekarani Grant and Bor Deodhai Japisajia — as epicentres of the deadly animal disease.
"Our primary objective is to prevent the further spread of ASF and protect the livestock population. These measures are crucial to containing the potential epidemic and safeguarding the economic interests of pig farmers," Garg said.
The administrative order has demarcated two critical zones to manage the outbreak. The villages surrounding the epicentres have been designated as "infected zones", while villages within a 10km radius have been classified as "surveillance zones".
Under the new regulations, pig producers and breeders are mandated to maintain strict biosecurity protocols. Any pig mortality must be immediately reported to the veterinary dept, with carcasses requiring deep burial under rigorous biosecurity measures.
"We are leaving no stone unturned to control this disease. Each reported case will be thoroughly investigated and contained to prevent potential transmission," a senior veterinary official said.
The comprehensive ban encompasses all pig-related activities, including live pig transportation, selling of pork and pig products and pig slaughter within Sivasagar district. Violations of these guidelines could result in severe penalties. Local farmers and livestock owners have been advised to cooperate with veterinary teams and report any suspicious animal deaths or disease symptoms promptly
