Does Goa need cat shelters ?
This kitten is one amongst many we find on a daily basis at the markets in Goa . Some attacked by dogs , some hit by vehicles or some beaten up by humans . Why is it considered ok to dump these little ones at the market to suffer ? #spayandneuter #spayandneuteryourpets #spayneutersaveslives
Twenty community cats were spayed from the SGPDA and the wholesale fish market Margao . Many came together to financially contribute towards the cause , some to pick the cats , some to foster pre op and post op as well . Volunteers saw to it that the cats were as comfortable as possible. TNR is the only way to control the growing population.
Steps to Sterilize a Stray Cat:1. **Identify Unsterilized Cats**: Examine the area to find cats without an ear notch, as a notched ear indicates the cat has already been sterilized.2. **Capture the Cat**: Use an escape-proof carrier to capture the cat. Scruffing the cat can help ensure it doesn’t escape. It may be helpful to use bait, like food, to lure the cat into the carrier.3. **Schedule the Surgery**: Make an appointment with your vet for the sterilization procedure. Confirm the vet's requirements for pre-surgery preparations.4. **Prepare for Surgery**: Keep the cat fasting for 12 hours before surgery. Ideally, capture the cat the previous night, provide a wholesome dinner, and then ensure it remains fasting. A cage is ideal for containing unpredictable stray cats.5. **Surgery**: Take the cat to your vet for the sterilization procedure.6. **Ear Notching**: Ensure the vet notches the cat’s ear during the surgery to indicate it has been sterilized. This step is crucial for future identification.7. **Post-Op Care**: This is the most crucial part. Keep the cat in a cage to restrict movement and promote faster healing. Administer medications as prescribed by the vet on time. Provide semi-solid food on the first day, then normal food in the following days.8. **Show Affection**: Give the cat plenty of love and attention during the post-op period to help it feel safe and comfortable.9. **Monitor the Cat**: Regularly check the cat’s incision site for signs of infection, such as redness, swelling, or discharge. Ensure the cat is eating, drinking, and behaving normally.10. **Release**: Once the wound has completely healed, release the cat back into the same area where it was captured. Make sure the cat is alert and active before releasing it.11. **Follow-Up**: Keep an eye on the cat after release to ensure it reintegrates into its environment and continues to thrive.
Toto was rescued by us 6 years ago when she was mauled by dogs . She survived and recently she met with an accident. My friend Sanketa Gaonkar Desairushed her to different vets . Dr Nadia Dsouza was kind enough to go out of the way to help Toto . Toto made it through the night and PAWS - Panjim Animal Welfare Society welcomed her with open arms . She went through many tests , x rays and finally surgery . Two months of recovery and Toto is back home to her territory where she is the queen . Thank you Sanketa , dr Nadia , Nyra and Paws . Not forgetting Shailesh who drove her to and fro . May God bless all of you abundantly for reaching out to toto when I wasn’t around . ❤️🐈
