This arowana was presented to us as a referral case.
The most common mistake people make is getting a fish which will out grow the tank size.
They are surface feeders and excellent jumpers . Also known as "water monkeys".
This behavior inturn can cause severe damage to lateral line, vital organs and inturn lead to abnormal swimming posture .
X rays and CT scans are the most appropriate diagnostic tools for the same.

*Every fish that swims abnormal doesn't have swimbladder issue*

We did a change in management along with supplementation to reduce down stress and excitation levels.

PAPA the HEN!!
Came in with complain of anorexia, severe weight loss , respiratory dysponea, lung sounds.

On further notice he hadn't eaten for 15 days.
So we decided to start fluid therapy , brochiodialtors , antibiotics and supportives.

Rat bite wound.

The Indian Starback Tortoise was presented to us with the history of wound or trauma after they were left with the care takers.
However on examination , it looked typical of a rat bite injury.

The wound was dressing and necessary pain meds were given .
However,
It's important to know that keeping these animals in captivity is illegal and the species is protected under the Wildlife Protection Act.

TUMOR REMOVAL IN FISH UNDER ANESTHESIA.

Goldie was presented us in the month of May for tumor growth.
The tumor increased in size and we decided to surgically remove it.

We decided to go for an x ray first to see if the central vein or spine was involved.
Since the surgery needs to have minimal bleeding for a 80 gm fish.
To our suprise , she had a pebble stuck as well . The pebble was in transeverse position and lodged in one of the operculum.

Anesthesia being the most intersting part.

We completed both the procedure with smooth recovery.

Goldie is back home 🏡 and swimming like before.

When its important to assess all the Heath Parameters closely.
This case was presented to us with a history of sudden onset of mortality in the Aquarium.
This was a fresh water tank. A detailed exmaination during necrospy revealed heavy infestation of Monogean.
We had to treat the tank, correct the nutrition and create new guideliness for tank cleaning and sanitation.
Today we see a lot of products in the mareket claiming to cure the fish from any disease.
Please dont fall for such products. A lot of learning and understanding goes into prescribing the corrective treatment and measurement for the same.

Hole-in-the head disease (HITH)
The fish will develop lesions mostly on the head and the trunk.
Pitted dermal lesions are noted.
The cause for the same can be improper quarrantine treatment, water quality, poor nutrition.
It's not HEXAMITA or parasite related always.
Recent studies have shown the same signs with mycobacterium or nutritional deficiency.
We treated the fish accordingly and it's doing well.

But when I saw Whale Shark in Georgia aquarium, I was stunned.

Designing a Turtle Habitat
1. Tank : Make sure when choosing a tank or tub consider the adult size of the animal.
Also consider the s*x of the Turtle. Females are much bigger in size then Male turtles.
2. Light : Direct sunlight is the best source. However Artificial source of light can also be
used. Make sure the light is placed near the basking area.
3. Basking Pad: Turtles need the basking spot. This is the point where turtle get time to
relax and increase their body temperature.
4. Enrichment : Enrichment in the form of hideouts mimic their natural environment.
Apart from the above mentioned one can also add thermostat or filter to the tank . All of this depends upon the environment in which the turtle is kept.

Started my day with handling Cetaceans, especially when stranded.
- A Marine Mammal when stranded (live) , cannot be pushed back into the sea without veterinary assessment on its health.
- The fate either /or is unpredictable.
- However understanding that each stranded animal gives a chance to do detailed study.
- Blood, Blowhole, USG , Xray.. everything, you name it , will give the best idea on what's wrong with the animal apart from morphometrics.

* These animals are protected and are schedules animals and have protection laws as same as tiger.

1. Blood : Cetacean blood examination.
2. Blowhole : Chuff sample.

Dugong belong to the order Sirenia.
- Its range spans the water of 40 countries through out the Indo-Pacific,
- Dugong is largely dependent on seagrass community.
- The have a fusiform body with no dorsal fin. Flippers are paddle like.
-The Dugong is easily distinguished from the manatee by its fluke , dolphin like tail.
- In India, they occur in Gulf of Mannar, PalkBay, Gulf of Kutch and Andaman and Nicobar islands.
- IUCN status list these animals as vulnerable.

Since lockdown we have been getting alot of calls for fish consultation.
This one is from a KOI owner in kerala.
H/O Sudden mortality in the pond ,after introducing a new batch of fish .
The fish were eating well ,swimming well but after 2-3 days ,the fish were affected and mortality was noted everyday.
According to the owner , they had brought the KOI from one of the breeders before and since the fish were doing well , they ordered more the next time.
The owner has the perfect water filtration setup, good water quality ,but on checking the filtration setup he found parasite in the tank.
We treated the system for 3 days and the fishes are doing well.
A good note to take home 🏡
1. ISOLATION and QUARANTINE of Newly purchased fish is important.
2. Prophylactic treatment for 3 weeks and then should be introduced with the old stock.
3. DON'T use antibiotics for the same .
