If there’s one common culprit we’ve seen when it comes to yeast overgrowth, it’s always the food🫠
Here are some factors that might be causing it:
1. High Carbohydrates & Starches Feed Yeast
• Most dry dog foods and some wet foods contain high amounts of rapidly digested carbohydrates like wheat, corn, rice, potato, peas, and even some starchy vegetables.
• Yeast (Malassezia) thrives on sugar and simple carbs—these ingredients break down into sugars in your dog’s digestive system, fueling yeast overgrowth on the skin, in the ears, and in the gut.
2. Poor Food Quality and Processing
• Highly processed kibble and canned foods often have additives, preservatives (like BHA), and high levels of carbs, which disrupt the gut microbiome and increase inflammation.
• Advanced Glycation End Products (AGEs), formed during high-heat processing, promote inflammation and support yeast survival.
3. Food Allergies or Sensitivities
• Common protein sources (chicken, beef, dairy, soy, egg) and grains can trigger chronic allergic reactions in some dogs.
• Food allergies inflame the gut and weaken the skin barrier, making it easier for yeast to multiply.
• Chronic gut and skin inflammation leads to “dysbiosis”—an imbalance where bad microbes outcompete the good, allowing yeast to take over.
4. Feeding Sugary Treats and Table Scraps
• Chews, biscuits, and processed treats with added sugar or honey are direct fuel for yeast.
• Table scraps and fruits (like bananas or raisins) are high in sugars and should be strictly limited for dogs prone to yeast infections.
5. Lack of Gut Support
• A diet devoid of prebiotics (fiber) and probiotics can weaken the gut’s defense against yeast overgrowth.
• An unhealthy gut microbiome can’t keep yeast in check.
Feeding fermented foods to a system already over run with yeast, could also do more harm than good.
