Help Highway

12/01/2022

..
Isha & Tejal found Highway in the middle of the highway (no guesses where he got his name from). They thought he was already dead but Isha thankfully saw him lift his head up. It took a while before they could pull up to the side of the road, constantly looking back to check if any other vehicle didn’t run him over thinking he’s dead already.

They stopped traffic and managed to secure him and drove at snail speed to get a fractured, howling Highway back to Mumbai.

He has recovered beautifully, though his leg’s still not completely fixed yet. He might walk with that slight limp all his life.

This boy has so much energy and is a total love bug. It would be a shame if after this miraculous recovery he has to be settled back on the road somewhere.

Looking for a home for this miracle child. Do connect on +91 98334 30608 or +91 98207 14650 to adopt.

He is all of 10 months old!

Pls share!

It's time again to take all the precautions we can, lockdown has been difficult for everyone and we have to be cautious and make sure we don't reach a lockdown again...

That's why we will be operating like this.. you leave your pet inside and can sit outside and see the grooming process...

If you are feeling even slightly unwell or have a cold then please send your pet with someone else...

Thank you!

Long Post Alert

It’s been 17 days since Spotty died.. It’s been 18 days since I brought him, Bunty, Chotu & Tiny back from Hands that Heal.

The last month has taken a toll on me emotionally. I cannot shake off the feeling of how wrong I went when I decided to put 5 dogs in Ms Anamika’s shelter - Hands that Heal.

Spotty, Bosky, Bunty, Chotu & Tiny lived in Veera Desai Road, Prathamesh complex and were being cared for by Jetal. This bunch always got into trouble and one day the issues escalated to such an extent that these dogs needed to be moved asap. Jetal moved them to a friends farm in Pune. They stayed there for 4 years after which they needed to be moved again. Tejal who is a common friend between Jetal and me asked if I knew somewhere we could move the kids to. I had known Anamika ji from HTH and checked with her if she would take them in.

I will forever be grateful to Anamika ji for taking in the 5 of them when there was no where else to move them to. BUT this does NOT excuse the negligence these kids suffered in such a shirt period of time - because of which 2 of them lost their life.

Spotty, Bosky, Bunty, Chotu and Tiny were dropped at HTH on July 18th 2021. Tejal and me accompanied the ambulance and went to drop them ourselves.

We had a verbal chat that this would be a temporary situation and we would find a more permanent solution - a home or farm and then shift them there. We also promised to contribute towards their upkeep and whatever would be needed in case a medical situation arises. We had NOT surrendered the kids to HTH and this was crystal clear. Where we made a mistake was we didn’t do any paperwork. We should have had some sort of paperwork mentioning that the kids were only being fostered at HTH until we were able to get them settled for good.

I would like to clarify that Anamika ji DID NOT ASK FOR THE UPKEEP. But we realise its not possible caring for so many animals without any money. We transferred an amount of 10k every month. Yes I realise it’s a meagre amount but that is all we could afford, Jetal (their original care taker) chipped in 8k and Tejal gave the rest plus medical bill. We have records to show all the transactions that were done.

Anamika ji informed us that Bosky’s tumor was removed by her Vet. She also told us that blood tests were needed before the surgery for which Tejal transferred 2k. The total cost was 7400/-, the deficit was paid to Anamika ji on July 23rd.

When the kids were dropped we had agreed that you would keep us updated on how the kids were doing. After incessant requests you shared a picture of Bosky on August 24th and a video on August 25th. That’s over a month after they were dropped at HTH.

We went to visit HTH three times after the kids started staying at HTH. We did not do surprise visits, each time Anamicaji was informed of our visits before hand. The first time she said it’s too soon to meet the kids. the second time she said she had less staff so we couldn’t see them. The third time she said the kids would be disturbed seeing us. She said Manjari had told her that once the kids came in not to let the owners meet, where as I too mentioned that I had gotten a communication done and we were told that the kids want to meet us. This should have been a HUGE RED FLAG and we should have insisted and brought the kids back. But because she helped when no one else would and out of respect and trust we let it be not thinking anything more of it. BIG MISTAKE.

When we dropped the kids, we had asked Anamika ji if she could get Bunty spayed, we would bear the cost for the same and for which she agreed. This was July. August she told us they haven’t been able to do the surgery yet, but they would do it soon. She kept complaining how Bunty was instigating fights. We insisted that she get him spayed asap. We told her if she isn’t able to get the surgery done in September we would take him and get the surgery done and drop him back post recovery. That is when she told us that no he is sick and let his blood work be seen by the vet and the surgery would be done in October. Bunty’s spaying never got done. Even though we offered to pay in advance. She informed us that she was sick and was undergoing treatment herself and then there was work happening at the shelter so she wasn’t being able to get Bunty spayed.

HTH had recently moved to a new place which is where we dropped the kids and she told us that the place was being done up so the kids could run around post monsoons. We saw that the work was going on. But the dogs were separated in 3-4 large sections, what looked like 60-70 dogs in each division. She said this set up was temporary and once the rains stopped the work would be completed in a couple months.

When we visited again the work was on hold and we didn’t get to see the dog sections again. When we asked for videos or pics, we got a video on November 14th - they were all eating from one big bowl and looked like they had not seen food in ages. Anamika ji complained that it took forever to find our dogs and get them out to take pics/videos.

In September anamica had called tejal complaining about the dogs internally fighting as well as with other dogs. But to our surprise we couldn’t figure out why the kids fought internally as they have been living together peacefully all these years and never got into such massive fights as she described. However when she said they where fighting with other dogs we since than have been asking Anamika ji to let me take the dogs back and this was September end. But She refused every time saying don’t worry they will settle. So we where confused as to what she really wanted. In October when I asked her again to let me come and meet the kids and she said work was going on and gates of the shelter were closed and no one could get out or come in, But as per her post on FB she took in 70+ cats. How did the gates open then?

Bosky died on December 9th, in her sleep as per Anamika ji. She tried to call Tejal to inform in the afternoon. Tejal missed her call and called her back that night when Anamika ji informed her that Bosky was no more. In the same conversation she informed Tejal that Spotty too was sick and needed blood work and had a surgery for a hematoma on his ear. Prior to this we weren’t informed about his health. We asked for Bosky’s burial/cremation pictures. Nothing was shared. When asked about Bunty’s neutering she said he was going to go for neutering. She said the 5 of them got into fights amongst themselves. These 5 have been living together since they were pup’s. They stayed in the Pune farm without one incident. All their fights started here? Does that even make sense?

We had heard enough by then. We decided that we would get the rest back anyhow. I asked Anamika ji when I could come and take the rest. She flat out refused to retun the dogs. I have no clue why! I have no idea why she had a change of heart but on 10th, which is the next day of informing us of Bosky’s death and Spotty’s ill health she told me I could come take the dogs the next day. I went there in an ambulance and seeing Spotty broke my heart. The kid was all bones. He had bed sores. There was skin peeling from his leg. He was in a miserable condition.

We screwed up. We shouldn’t have put our dogs in a shelter to begin with, but does this excuse the shelter owner from any responsibility just because she offered to help?

We thought it would be ok to leave them there on a temporary basis as agreed as we could see the grounds were huge and the kids would be able to run free post 2 months of renovations....we saw there were a lot of people in the common area who were workers of HTH.... we thought as having so many animals she had many staff that were capable of looking after so many... that's why we left them...we left them with Anamika ji because she gave us her word they would be fine and settle soon....we left them there because Anamika ji said we could visit whenever we liked and she would share regular updates. We left them there because she showed us the love and attention she gave to those that were out in the common area. We left them there because we trusted her.

We were not given any receipt of any payments made. She apparently wasn’t even aware that payments were coming to her. At one point she told me that how can I find your dogs in the midst of 300 dogs? How does a person who runs a shelter not know the animals they have? I have feeder friends who feed 500+ animals and know every animal on their feeding route. When she sent us the video of the kids eating from one bowl, she said if your dogs are so stressed would they be eating. They have been at HTH since July. This video is of November. Even if they are stressed, wouldn’t they be eating after so many months of being in the same place? This would hold true if the video was taken a day or 2 after the kids were moved to HTH. Why were we never told that Spotty is unwell? The state we got him back in - that did not happen overnight. No burial pic of Bosky was shared. Why?

To all shelter owners - Please please do not say Yes to animals just because you can’t say no. We don’t doubt the intention but it is your responsibility that the animals are not neglected to this extent that they lose their life.

To everyone who thinks they are helping the animal by sending them to a shelter. PLEASE THINK 10 TIMES. You are in all probability sentencing them to a miserable life.

Please always keep all conversations on text so there is proof of who said what. Calls unless recorded just becomes hearsay. We didn’t think of any of this purely out of trust, which sorry to say has been brutally broken.

This post is not to bring shame to anyone, but this is me taking responsibility of how badly I screwed up. This post is also to make people aware that Shelters is not somewhere you put healthy animals. We learnt the hard way. Hoping through this post we’re able to help other animals from the same fate as Bosky and Spotty.
Attached are conversations, pictures and videos of when we dropped the kids and in what condition iv’e got them back.
This entire ordeal will haunt me for eternity. I just wish this post helps save other’s from the same fate.
