Bruna - name suggested by Alexandra who tagged me on a post about her just under 2 months ago - was picked by me in mapusa after a kind lady managed to secure her.
She was in a very bad shape with a lot of damage to her skin due to malnutrition and some deep wounds.
A few weeks after being with me, one of her back legs became very stiff.
I took her to the vet twice but no diagnosis was reached so I took her to a third vet and there, they were able to give a diagnosis - she must had a fracture in her hip when she was picked up and it healed in an awkward way causing her leg to stay stiff.
The leg is getting a bit more flexible and hopefully, it continues to improve.
She's a darling and has settled in nicely with the other dogs. ❀✨

This puppy - Blackie - was brought to Halfway Home about one week ago by a lovely couple.
They used to feed him and one evening when they went to feed him, they found him with a open wound on his head and unresponsive.
Since it was late at night and they were not able to get hold of any vets, they brought him to me for first aid.
I ensured he was stable and free of pain.
Next morning, I took him to WVS for an examination.
Xrays were taken but no visible damage to the skull could be seen.
So the vets suggested we treat him as a brain-trauma patient.
Without CT or MRI scan, no one could tell how much damage was there in the brain and how likely he was to recover.
It's been a week now and he's doing very well. β€πŸ™ŒπŸ½

The dogs at HalfWay Home are free to roam unless, for certain reasons, they need to be contained - the main reason is when they've just arrived and need to accustom to the place but not all need to be.
Lazaro has been free from the start, going just outside the enclosure where most dogs hang out, then coming back in.
Since yesterday morning, he hadn't been seen so i made a post on local whatsApp groups and within a couple of hours, silke found him and took him to christine place (close to where he was found).
Yogesh kindly brought him to Halfway Home as I don't have a vehicle at the moment.

At least they know it can be pretty painful. 🧐

The remaining eye is now safe. πŸ™ŒπŸ½
She had a very large abscess in one of her hind legs and she is not putting that leg on the ground. So sahana and i took her for an xray at wvs and no bones are damaged.
She'll be on antibiotics and that should be enough to heal the leg.
Blood reports didn't show anything that's concerning.
She's on the way to a full recovery. β€βœ¨πŸ’«

On Tuesday, someone reported in one of the local whatsApp groups, a dog who had been crying in the same spot for at least two days.
I went there with Cornell and we found this dog with many flies around her. She was in distress and in pain.
At first, it looked like she had lost both eyes.
But when we got home, we could see that although one eye had been eaten by maggots, the other had an infection and still had a chance to be saved...
Maggots had already started eating the flesh next to the other eye.

He really seems to be checking out what is the best/most comfortable spot/bed. 😊

Lazaro came to Halfway Home a few days ago after sadly having his suspected cancerous eyes removed.
He was found with an abnormal growth in both eyes. One had no chance of being saved but the truly amazing/dedicated vets at WVS tried to save the other one but it was not possible - the damage was already too extensive.
He seems to be settling down nicely at HWH. πŸ™ŒπŸ½βœ¨

Prince on the way to WVS for examination.

23/12/2021

Prince was in a crevice for four days while a lady - Sweta - tried to get help.
Eventually, I came across the case through North Goa Animal Care as Sonia had made a request for help.
When I arrive there with Sahana, it was clear be was not able to walk.
So we pick him up and took him to WVS for examination.
X-rays were taken and a compression in the his spine could be seen as well as 3 pallets around his body.
The vets said there was a slim chance he would walk again.
He was at Halfway Home for about 3months and was very determined.
We treated him with supplements and hydrotherapy and today I got msg from Sweta telling me he's back at his territory, about 4-5kms from here.
Sweta will continue to take care of him and hopefully he'll be safe there.

More photos and videos will be shared.

Zeke was brought to Halfway Home by Michelle Fernandes.
She feeds him, his seven sublings and their mother.
One day she went to feed them and saw he was limping.
So she took him to Stray Assist where they had to operate on his leg and put surgical wires to hold the broken bone together.
He's now receiving aftercare treatment and will be available for adoption when fully recovered.

Bruno Wagner- one of the animal welfare’s newer patrons- came to India for the first time in 2010, right before he started his nursing course in the UK. All through the 3-year course, his mind would wander back to the idea of visiting or staying in India again. Though the Brazilian native wanted to come to India immediately after his course was over, he had to stay in the UK for a few more years due to citizenship reasons. Finally, in 2015, Bruno got his opportunity to come back to India and has been doing so every year, only heading back to the UK to do a refresher course and work for a few months.
Last year during the monsoon, while Bruno was staying in Goa, he heard about a poor dog who was caught with a wire wrapped around her waist. He went along with other rescuers to help. He would visit the dog at WVSβ€” an animal shelter, and he noticed how many other dogs were there, ready to be released but with no home to go to. He decided that he would do something to help these stray dogs when he next returned to India.
He adopted his first Luna, who he says is the matriarch of the pack, from WVS in 2020 and started on a veterinary course. He currently has 28 dogs in his care and plans on creating a page called Half Away Home, in hope that people will adopt some of the dogs that he is fostering and looking after. As much as it would break Bruno’s heart to let any dog go, he says that it would be best in the long term so that he can help more dogs in Goa.
