Covid-19 in Pets QnA

As we all know whole world is suffering from Corona virus currently. We came up with an idea to answer all your common questions for corona virus in pets.

Q.1 Can pets contract COVID-19 and are therefore a bigger risk to people than previously thought?

In relation to the dog in Hong Kong, the finding of antibodies in the dog’s blood indicates that it had an immune reaction to the virus and therefore confirms infection. However, the dog did not develop any signs indicative of COVID-19 disease. Most importantly, no live virus was found on the dog and the PCR result was only weakly positive, making it unlikely for the dog to pose a risk to transmit the virus to other animals or to another person.

Q.2 Should we be testing pets for the virus?

At this time there is no indication that pets should be tested for the SARS-CoV-2 virus. Currently there is no evidence that pet dogs or cats can be a source of infection to other animals or to humans. Persons who test positive for COVID-19 should be isolated from others including children, spouses and pets to ensure that they do not inadvertently transfer infection as per WHO recommendations.

Q.3 What should be done about a pet’s coat if it’s potentially contaminated by the virus that causes human COVID-19?

Any surface with which an infected person comes into contact may transfer virus or viral RNA, and that includes dog fur or nasal secretions. We urge pet owners and those dealing with pets to adhere to high hygiene standards for themselves, including proper hand washing before and after handling pets. There are no anti-viral shampoos for pets, and the key is to prevent pet exposure to infected persons. Disinfectants or Clorox wipes can be skin irritants and toxic, so should not be used on pets. Current data indicates that on porous substances, like cardboard, the virus cannot survive longer than 24 hours. An animal from a high-risk house or where a member of the household is confirmed as having human COVID-19 should be isolated (i.e. in a crate) and left alone as much as possible for a few days.

Q.4 Is Corona Vaccine for Dogs is helpful to prevent dogs from infecting through Covid-19?

Available vaccines for corona not relevant with Covid-19. This a new virus and no vaccine is currently available for this new virus.
