A photo after a hard whole day work.

I leave the chamber for home with happiness. This happiness after serving the voiceless animals can't be compared with anything I got in my life. Every night I have a good sleep thinking that I have tried my best to save the life who can't speak.

I am fortunate being a Veterinarian.

Good night to all.

Best wishes from me to all the Veterinarians. Happy World Veterinary day.

Posting one of my old write up to to show my respect to all the Veterinarians of the world. This was posted in my FB wall in 2017.

In recent times saw many posts in fb and many incidences in different cities regarding efficiency of a Veterinarian and couldn't stop myself from posting this. A Veterinarian is a General Physician, Gynaecologist, Gastro-enterologist, Cardiologist, Dermatologist, Paediatrician, Pathologist, Bacteriologist, Virologist, Immunologist, Anaesthetist, Radiologist, Sonologist, General Surgeon, Orthopaedic Surgeon, Cosmetic Surgeon, Neurologist, Oncologist, Opthalmologist, Geriatrician and expert of many disciplines of Cow, Buffalo, Goat, Sheep, Dog, Cat, Horse, Camel, Rabbit, Guneapig, Rat, Hen, Duck, Pet birds, all wild life specieses etc. It is harder job than any discipline of any Medicos. Moreover, he is a Nutritionist, Poultry specialist, Wild life Worker, Food technologist, Laboratory Animal Scientist, Extension Worker, Scientist, Administrator etc. It is again harder than any discipline of food production. I don't want to prove that a Veterinarian knows everything but every body should feel that it is not that easy to remember all these subjects inside a single brain and to apply them in practical field. Do you expect a human Dermatologist to perform an intramedullary pinning or any other Orthopaedic surgery??? Or a human Nutritionist to perform an Eye Surgery or a Caesarian Section?? OR will you visit an Anaesthetist for a Chemotherapy?? A Veterinarian have to attend all the diseases in Rat to Elephant and also have to fight with deadly Zoonotic diseases like Highly Pathogenic Avian influenza, Anthrax, Brucellosis, Swine flue, Japanese Encephalitis, Rabies etc. Sometimes people present patients in so bad condition that becomes very difficult to cure. Some diseases like Parvo Virus, CD, ICH, IRT, Panleukopenia, BQ, Anthrax, Tetanus, RD, DP, PPR, severe brain injury, Renal failure, Cardiac arrest, Severe injury from road accidents and so many are almost non-curable. But we used to say that the Veterinarian killed my dog !!! Sometimes we used to say that the Veterinarian has done a wrong treatment !!! Is it possible by an Animal lover or owner to know this vast science to judge a Veterinarian !!! It really hurts when you cure more than 1000 patients and you are blammed only if 1 or 2 expires which were in bad condition. Veterinarians are not God that they will cure everything.
I love my profession and I am proud to be a Veterinarian. My appeal to all Veterinarian to serve this profession with PRIDE, KINDNESS and LOVE to animals. We should correct the faults and miss arrangements at our end and upgrade our KNOWLEDGE and SKILL day by day. My appeal to all Animal lovers/ owners, please trust your Veterinarian and keep faith on Science. Please don't Google Medical or Veterinary Science, it is not one liner, it is detailed, explanatory and comparative science..... Best Wishes to all. Dr Amit Sarkar, M.V.Sc. (Vety. A Veterinarian always feels good about his/her profession wherever he/she goes.

I have many good memories of my profession in my recent family tour to Himachal Pradesh.

Met many Veterinarians at Dharamsala and honoured on joining in a get together with them.

Stayed in the guest house of CSKHPKV at Palampur with a magnificent view of Dhawladhar Range and visited the Veterinary College.

Bir near Palampur is the famous place for paragliding but I was very happy on visiting Veterinary Hospital of Bir.

Found a large migratory flock of Gaddi (goat breed of HP) at Bir Veterinary Hospital.

Met the recognized Indian dog breed Gaddi (Himalayan Sheepdog) who was guarding the goat flock.

I was very happy to meet Dr Amit Kirmani, Veterinary Doctor of Bir Veternary Hospital and was surprised to know that he is already familiar with my name. One of my patient (a persian cat) travelled from siliguri to Bir and Dr Amit Kirmany showed me the photo of Fitness certificate given by me for travel.

Dharamsala and Palampur are very beautiful and calm place. It was great to visit these places for 2nd time.

Rabies, a deadly disease.
Morbidity and mortality is 100%.

Often pet parrents ask me a question that "Can I get infected with Rabies by my dog's scratch or bite? How can I prevent this?"

This video explains symptoms of Rabies in human and its prevention.

Watch and remember this carefully.

A 12 year old Saint Bernard dog was suffering from a subcutaneous tumor and his parents were afraid about his surgery at this old age.

Dogs are angels and its a Veterinarian's duty to stand by the angel's side.

After performing all the required blood tests and after confirming his good health status, I have performed the surgery.

Now the senior dog is doing well in postoperative period. And hopefully he will recover completely very soon.

Warm wishes to all the angels.

There is nothing in this world more cute than an animal. I feel like this.

He is Simba, a rescued Leopard (Panthera pardus) cub. This picture is 3 years old, when he was approx 2-3 months old and I played with him and he used to crwal my back. Found his pictures and videos while scrolling my old phone, and remembered my friendship with him.

Now he is full grown and living a good life at Bengal Safari.

How old is your Dog in human years?.. Lets find out.

Dogs are very emotionally bonded with their parents. Dogs love them unconditionally and they always concerned about their health. And I am witnessing this loving bond since last 22 years being fortunate to be their Health Protector. The most unlucky part is the life span of our best friend is much more shorter than human. So its always a Dog Parent's concern, How old my dog is !!

Here is some charts to find out your Dog's age in human years. Lets find it out. If you can't calculate, I will help you.

Please write in comment section
1. Your Dog's name
2. His/her actual age
3. His/her approximate adult body weight.
4. Then his/her age in human years as per the chart.

Please don't forget to post a photo of your dog.

I pray for good health and long life of your Dog.
Best wishes.

Parasites are one of the most important reason of sickness of your pet.

There are different kinds of ecto and endo parasites which spreads different kind of diseases.

Endo parasites are also called as worms which are killed by dewormes. Often pet parents purchase a dewormer and fed to their pets. Is that sufficient??

A single dewormer can't kill all types of worms. Visit your Veterinarian for complete guideline of endo ecto parasite control and periodical stool examination.

Two beautiful cats , Otis & Leo from the same house has been neutered by me few days back.

And both of them are doing fine at home and enjoying post operative days. The pictures are sent by happy pet parents.

Cryptorchidism is rare in cats, but here I have removed te**es from inguinal canal in one cat.

Neutering increases life span of a cat and sloves many problems associated with hormone. Happy to help them.

Hello Pet Parents.
Previously I have discussed about Canine Babesiosis.
Today I want to emphasize another Tick born infection. Canine Erlichiosis caused by Ripicephalus tick bite.
Erlichia canis is a rickettsia which attacks the blood cells and starts destroying them. Major outcome is Epistaxis (nasal bleeding) and bleeding from internal organs due to low blood cell count specially platelet.

By the description we can understand how dangerous the disease is but an early diagnosis ensure better chance of cure.

Here is DJ, the Golden Retriever, suffered from sudden epistaxis. I have started anti rickettsial drug immediately and sent the blood smear for laboratory examination. The report shows E canis positive.
By the greatness of Veterinary Science, I had already started medicine specific for rickettsia before the report comes and by the grace of God, no epistaxis is seen after the 1st dose of medicine.

More tests to be done to DJ to asses his health condition and measures will be taken as per the reports.

Prevent tick bite and prevent tick born diseases.

Best Wishes

How your Dog suffers from Canine Parvo Virus (CPV) or Canine Distemper Virus (CDV) even after you have done vaccination ...
27/01/2024

How your Dog suffers from Canine Parvo Virus (CPV) or Canine Distemper Virus (CDV) even after you have done vaccination against these diseases???

Its due to vaccination failure. In my last 22 years of experience of treating animals I have found most of the pet parents vaccinate their pets improperly, as a result your dog is unable to produce sufficient immunity against the disease resulting in vaccination failure.

Vaccination of animals isn't just putting an injection, its a procedure. A Veterinarian having basic knowledge of Virology and Immunology can perform an effective vaccination. There are many aspects to be considered before and after vaccination which can only be understood by a Veterinarian.

Recently, I have found many dogs suffering from CPV or CDV only due to improper vaccination by the pet parents.

Here are some points enlighting the cause of vaccination failure.

1. Most common reason of vaccination failure in dogs is vaccination done by Non-Vets, even sometimes by the pet parents themselves. As I have already mentioned the person doesn't have the knowledge of Virology and Immunology may fail in producing sufficient immunity. A vaccination card without signature of a Veterinarian is invalid.

2. Immune status of the animal. A Veterinarian must understand the immune status of the animal before performing vaccination by taking history of the animal, examining physically or by laboratory examination.

3. No animal should be vaccinated in diseased condition. For example, In fever, cough, diarrhea, vomition, skin disease etc, even if the animal isn't eating normally, the vaccination should be postponed.

4. The rule mostly followed in pet animal vaccination is deworm before vaccination. Worm or ectoparasite infestation may interfare the antibody production inside the body.

5. If a dog is survived from CPV or CDV infection, then don't rush for vaccination immediately. Consult your Veterinarian for proper timing for vaccination.

6. An animal under stress can't produce sufficient antibody. So, one should wait to overcome the stress like, weather change, travel, parturition, pregnancy, anxiety etc.

7. If the mother is vaccinated, no puppy should be vaccinated before 45 days age due to interaction with maternal antibody.

8. Breakage of cold chain. Vaccines are highly sensitive and fragile. One should ensure cold chain of vaccine from its production to the clinic. Any breakage in cold chain in between may reduce the efficacy of vaccine. Even vaccines can't be kept in deep fridge. Ideal temperature of vaccine storage is 2-8 ° C. Please follow manufacturer's guidelines.

9. Improper vaccine schedule. Every vaccine has definite time interval for giving booster dose. If improper schedule is followed then it may fail to produce sufficient immunity.

10. Failure to give annual vaccination. Often pet parents vaccinate their pets in first year. But after that they forget or ignore to put annual vaccination as the dog was healthy. But when the antibody titre goes down then these deadly virus may attack your dog.

11. Improper quality of vaccine. Every vaccine should follow proper production protocol, research and trial to maintain optimum quality.

12. Vaccination may fail if put in animals having pre-existing disease like liver, kidney damage, diabetes, low blood cell count, cancer, immune mediated disease etc. It should be decided by a Veterinarian.

13. Improper route or failure to give injection. Sometimes one may follow improper rout of vaccination or may fail to put a S/C or I/M injection. Say for example, F1 staring of Ranikhet disease or Kennel Cough vaccine should be given by intra-nasal route.

14. Using multi-dose vials. Multi dose vaccine vials are made for mass vaccination program and for short period use. If a multi-dose vaccine is used for a prolonged period in different animals, it will fail to produce immunity.

15. VACCINES CONTAINING ALL STRAINS. Many viruses has different strain, as we have seen in COVID19 pandemic. So, if the VACCINE we are giving to animal doesn't contain all the strains found in this country then the vaccine will produce partial immunity against some strains. Other strains will still attack your dog with same virulency. For example, Canine Parvo Virus has 3 strains namely CPV-2a, CPV-2b and CPV-2c. I USE VACCINE WHICH HAVE ALL THESE 3 STRAINS, and will give your dog a complete immunity against Parvo. But unfortunately, there are many Brands in the market which doesn't contain all the strains of CPV or CDV. Those Vaccines will fail to produce antibody against some virulent strains.

16. Poor nutritional status or poor managemental practice even after proper vaccination may fail to produce sufficient immunity.

Here are some pictures of test reports confirming CPV or CDV Virus and their vaccination cards which are done Improperly. I have encountered all these patients Recently. All were vaccinated but suffered from CPV or CDV. Unfortunately, we lost one of them named Phoebe, even after giving standard supportive treatment. All others confirmed Parvo cases survived after giving supportive treatment. Remember, all dogs with vomition and bloody diarrhoea isn't Parvo virus. It has to be diagnosed confirmly clinically, by kit test or by RTPCR. I have posted the suffering of the animals also.

CDV or CPV have high mortality and morbidity. Please educate yourself, ask your Veterinarian for proper vaccination procedure and save your child like Pet animals from these deadly diseases.

(For Veterinarians, if I have missed any point, please feel free to discuss)

Always do a pre-vaccination check up by a Veterinarian before doing vaccination to your pet.

Best regards.

20/01/2024

Kidney Stones in Dogs and Cats : A silent disease.

Animals can't speak. So they often can't express their abdominal pain due to kidney stones. Kidney stones are often symptomless. Sometimes, few symptoms like hematuria (blood in urine), oliguria (less urine production), difficulty in urination, arched back posture, frequent micturition can be seen.

Most of the cases I have diagnosed by Ultrasound examination are accidental findings. In few cases symptoms followed by USG led to the diagnosis.

Sometimes nephroliths may pass to ureter from renal pelvis causing ureteral obstruction. Un managed kidney stones may lead to Urinary Bladder stones which may further lead to blockage of urethra creating an emergency situation. Sometimes chronic kidney stones may cause renal damage, tubular nephrosis, hydronephrosis etc.

There are different kinds of stone crystals in dogs and cats namely urate, phosphate, oxalate etc. Therefore, management of urinary stones are difficult and complex. A multi approach including surgical, medicinal and dietary managements may give considerable result.

Take care of your pet and consult your Vet to prevent urinary stones in dog and cats.
Please do an Ultrasound examination of kidney and urinary bladder for early diagnosis of urinary stones.

With Best Wishes.

06/01/2024

For Rabbit parrents:

The main mistake done by rabbit parents is with the choosing food for their loving Bunnies. And for the wrong food given for a long time the bunnies suffer from lots of problems.

Remember that rabbits are herbivorous and their digestive system is completely different from us or a dog. Rabbits have caecum in their digestive tract which we are lacking.

So we should choose good food according to their digestive ability. Here I have presented many picture illustrations about their food and digestive process. Please remember about the proportions of different foods given in the pictures.

I have seen in my practice that rabbit parents mostly feed them vegetables, grains, nuts, lots of fruits, gram, rice, bread and even human food. Most of these foods aren't good for rabbit's health.

One of my clients used to feed her rabbit a huge quantity of gram everyday since last two years and the rabbit was suffering from digestive problem. She was offering gram to the rabbit because it loves to eat gram. But, its pet parrents responsibility to choose good food for rabbit. If someone doesn't know then he/she should talk to a veterinarian.

Remember, Rabbit is a continuous feeder, they usually eat more than their body weight in a day, and their incisors teeth grow continuously. If they are given with a large quantity of hey what they will chew whole day preventing overgrowth of teeth and large amount of fiber in hey will maintain their digestive and nutritional needs.

Always consult with your Veterinarian for proper diet of your pet.

Best wishes.
