Lilaeopsis brasiliensis from South America can grow very compact, but a "lawn effect'' (4-7 cm tall) is only achieved at high light intensity. When planting in the aquarium small clumps (approx. 1/8 pot) should be placed a few centimetres apart to help the plants grow together more quickly. Place in an open position without shading from other plants to ensure good light. Lilaeopsis brasiliensis can be used in garden ponds, and also tolerates low salt concentrations in brackish aquariums.

Type: Stolon
Origin: South America
Growth rate: Slow
Height: 3 - 5+
Light demand: Medium
CO2 : Medium

Cardamine lyrata is actually a marsh plant from Japan. But it is also a familiar aquarium plant which thrives under water with 20-50 cm long stems. A characteristic trailing growth form makes it highly decorative, and ‘aerial’ roots often form on the plant itself.
Plant it in groups, and make sure the water temperature does not exceed 28 degrees C (this makes the leaves much smaller and the plant more leggy). Also suitable in garden ponds in the summer.

ROTALA ROTUNDIFOLIA PINK

The Latin name means "the plant with the round leaves'', but this only applies to the marsh variety, which has circular leaves. Rotala rotundifolia from South-East Asia has 15-30 long stems (2-3 cm wide) and long, narrow leaves. Unlike other Rotala species it is relatively undemanding, although it needs good light to produce red leaves.
It forms side shoots willingly, becoming compact and bushy. This also means that it is hard for light to reach the lower leaves, so the plant should be pruned frequently

"Hygrophila polysperma 'Rosanervig"

Hygrophila polysperma 'Rosanervig' is as undemanding as standard H. polysperma, getting 20-40 cm tall and 5-8 cm wide. It is also known under the trade names 'Sunset' and has a striking variegation with light nerves. But if you want deep-pink leaves you must provide intensive light. Otherwise the nerves are rather white.

The distinctive light colouring of the leaf nerves is probably caused by a virus which prevents chlorophyll from being produced in the cells around the leaf ribs, making them white. However, this virus does not affect other plants in the aquarium.

It has its origins in the Danish aquatic plant nursery Tropica. One special characteristic of this variety are the white-coloured leaf veins. They are not the symptom of a nutrient deficiency, though. It is assumed that a virus prevents the tissue around the veins from producing chlorophyll. This virus specialises in this variety only and thus poses no danger at all for the rest of the aquarium plants. This variety of the so well-known robust Asian H. polysperma has become a very highly coveted aquarium plant.

This undemanding red-coloured plant is very interesting as it is probably the easiest plant of that hue in cultivation. It grows under almost any condition

Ludwigia sp mini red

Mini Super Red Ludwigia (Ludwigia sp. “Super Red Mini”) is a very popular and very striking red plant for the serious freshwater planted aquarium. With proper care, this hardy, fast-growing plant can flourish and highlight the middle or background of the aquascape with intense red coloration. It can thrive with only moderate lighting, but it has the potential for complete red coloration with higher lighting and proper supplementation.

This variety of Mini Super Red Ludwigia requires moderate to high lighting. Its trimmings can be replanted. It does not require substrate, but does seem to absorb some of its nutrients through its side roots and it can be attached to driftwood and other surfaces. It does not require CO2 supplementation, but CO2 supplementation will contribute to more optimal growth and health. High lighting is necessary for this plant to maintain its optimal ultra red coloration.

Acmella Repens

Commonly known as creeping spot flower or opposite leaf spot flower, Acmella repens belongs to the sunflower family, Asteraceae. It is native to the southern half of Alabama and has recently gained popularity as an aquarium plant. It can be found growing on river banks, wet ditches, and pond edges. The creeping prostrate stems of Acmella repens make it perfect for tanks and add to the appearance and overall look. It gets adapted to the aquarium culture easily and beautifies it. The easy maintenance and exotic look make it one of the best plants for the aquariums.

Appearance: Acmella repens can be grown as a mid-ground or background plant as it has creeping prostrate stems. These stems can root when coming in contact with the soil and intensify. When grown in water, the floating stems also sometimes produce roots which look very beautiful in the aquarium. The stems are green or reddish in color and pubescent. Since the common name is the opposite leaf spot flower, the leaves emerge oppositely. The leaves have toothed margins that make the plant more exotic. Although it produces small yellow flowers, they emerge only in the dry locations. It is the reason why Acmella repens can be grown in completely aquatic or semi-aquatic conditions.

Hard/soft plant: It is a soft plant but easily adapts to the aquarium culture.

Ideal water temperature: The plant can thrive well under the temperature range of 20 to 30 degrees.

Lighting conditions: Acmella repens prefer full or partial sun and plenty of water for flourishing. Under intense lighting conditions, the plant shows bushier growth. It gets compact under partial light. However, both the conditions make it favorable for the tanks. Moderate or dim light may stunt growth.

Ideal pH level: pH ranging between 6 to 8 is perfect for Acmella repens. However, even if the water conditions fluctuate a bit, the plant will easily survive.
