Visakha Society for Protection and Care of Animals (VSPCA)

Visakha Society for Protection and Care of Animals (VSPCA) The population of street dogs in urban Vizag is healthier and ever-shrinking, as a result of our consistency.

VSPCA is an eco-sanctuary established in 1996 in Visakhapatnam working diligently to improve the conditions for animals in India while preserving vulnerable communities and ecosystems. Since 1996, the Visakha Society for the Protection and Care of Animals (VSPCA) has worked diligently improving the conditions for animals in India while preserving vulnerable communities and ecosystems. VSPCA’s expa

nding initiatives include halting illegal poaching & trade-in internationally-protected sea turtles and sharks, rescuing cows, water buffaloes and calves from cultural and illegal slaughter & transportation, and, providing permanent happy sanctuaries to hundreds of dogs, cats, birds, snakes, rams, monkeys, horses, rabbits, tortoises, ducks, raptors and animals suffering severe abuse or neglect. VSPCA provides a clean and permanent home to over 1300 large and small rescued animals in our Shelter near the city as well as, at VSPCA’s "Kindness Farm.” We provide spay and neuter procedures and, vaccines and health checks to 150,000 street dogs and many thousands of cats. "Awareness & Education along with Fishing Community Since 1996. The Change is Inevitable".
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
After 29 years, a remarkable transformation has occurred. In 1996, our pleas to authorities regarding Olive Ridley sea turtle nesting on our shores were met with blind denial. Despite facing injustice, we persisted, presenting evidence of egg theft and poaching. We witnessed the tragic sale of baby turtles and eggs, highlighting the cruelty inflicted upon these helpless creatures.

Our relentless efforts have paid off. In 1996, we documented 23 nests. Today, we observe over 900 nests, a testament to the "imprint technology" where adult females return to their natal nesting grounds. This year promises a significant nesting season, but are we prepared to welcome them?

The RK Beach, once a vital nesting ground, is facing severe degradation. Uncontrolled development, including falling rocks, submarine disturbances, structures, trees, games, and excessive lighting, pose significant threats to nesting turtles. This critical habitat is shrinking at an alarming rate of 20% per year, jeopardizing the survival of these endangered creatures. The release of 700,000baby turtles over the years highlights the importance of protecting their nesting grounds and ensuring their safe return.

We must prioritize habitat protection and restoration to safeguard these precious creatures. While authorities have shown increasing awareness and support for sea turtle conservation across the Andhra Pradesh coast, our journey continues. We will tirelessly monitor nesting sites, advocate for habitat protection, and strive to create conditions for a successful arribada (mass nesting) in the future.

A Heartbreaking Journey of Hope 🐾
-----------------------------------------

Today, we rescued a dog from the MVP Area who was in critical condition. This poor soul was suffering from food poisoning and severe diarrhea, causing painful dehydration. The area around his back end had become dry, hard, and infested with maggots and infection, causing him immense pain for days.

Thankfully, we received a call from a compassionate animal lover in the community. The VSPCA team rushed to the spot and brought the dog to our Shelter-1 at Marrikevalasa.

We immediately began treatment, cleaned his wounds, and started him on medication. Under the care of our dedicated team, he is now recovering quickly and showing signs of improvement.

For many years, VSPCA and our team have been tirelessly rescuing animals, giving them hope, and helping them heal. This rescue is another example of our ongoing commitment to saving lives and providing a brighter future for animals in need. We are incredibly grateful for the support of our community and the compassionate individuals who make this possible.

Please keep this little one in your thoughts as we continue his recovery. If you'd like to help, donations, support, and spreading awareness about animal welfare are always appreciated.

Can anyone abandon such dogs?
-------------------------------------
This is an act of crime in the highest order possible to abandon such dogs who at the first place are not suitable to the Indian climatic conditions and then facing a torrid time when on the
roads. There are more such dogs in our Shelters . Adoptions of such large dogs is always a big challenge. Apart from this just abandoning them the owners are directly interfering and posing a real problem to the success of Spay / Neuter programme . The Government need to regularise the pedigree dogs issue and give top priority to promotions of Indian dogs who are the natural residents in Indian conditions .

Animal welfare spreads to community --- the real impact !
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Very often we come across good effective deeds and their contribution to help animals in distress.
The percentage of loving animals , respecting the lives of the animas are definitely increasing .
The complaints from the public is also significantly reducing in this region and lot of awareness been created.
Projects implementations such as Spay Neutering, providing AntiRabies vaccnations and Revaccination programes are very effective means of changing the mindset of the humans to be kind to animals.
In this regard has been our projects to provide service at nominal fees or free to those who adopt Indian Dogs. and presently we set up a makeshift OPD at our shelter with a permanent structure to serve such conditions.
Here is one of many such cases where the children have brought a dog for treatment.
The change is REAL !

An injured cow by the hips rescued and taken to shelter for
further treatment and care. All cows have owners but there was no claimant for this cow. It was good to rescue quickly as the cow would have been sold to butchers as for the owner the cow is unproductive.

A complete transformation : A total Freedom for the Cobras : More Temples added to allow the devotees to Pray and perform Pujas !
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Nagula CHavithi or Nag Panchami is celebrated here after the furth day of Deepavalli every year.
This year we are very happy to note that from brining live snakes captured and tortured without any food 10 days before the rituals day ultimately leading to their deaths by dehydration and injuries to their mouths due to stitching and removal of fangs ----- over the past several years has given way to worships by images, artificial pits .
This year there have been more number of temples built for this purpose across the city particularly the eastern part where the incidences were more.
The constant awareness, education , joint raids and rescues by VSPCA have finally produced the desired results .
No more Cobras captures, No more cruelties to them and total freedom and this freedom to the cobras since past 14 years.
The highlight of this year is that more temples have come up for the devotees to pray and perform pujas !

The Sea Turtles is on at Bay of Bengal:
------------------------------------------
Olive Ridley Turtles are presently at our coast mating and this is one such evidence at our Urban coast near to Pudimadaka , Viakha , Anakapalle Dist,AP India.
We have been protecting since 1996 by INSITU as well EXSITU and almost release of 9 lakh babies.
We have been able to convince the government and asked them to finally perform what they have to do since four years now while we play both a monitoring as well focus on the Habitat Protection which is the way out and the extreme need of the hour as Habitat lost is lost forever. And this for the entire AP coast.
This year our objective is to deal with this issue from the Industrial belt Anakapalle area where the Industries and their related ambitous Parks are setup but not following the norms thereby polluting the beach and sea severely effecting the incoming Olive Ridley turtles coming for mating and nesting.

Male calves unwanted abandoned on roads:
-------------------------------------------------
Unproductive to the owners the moment the male calves survive the selfish and greed of the owner keeping tied until the milk period is over --- they ae left on the roads. They roam around on the roads surviving from the feed available on the roads just like street dogs until they are robbed for illegal slaughtering or until they reach 9 months of age to be sold in the shandies to be taken away ultimately for slaughtering.
Before this happens we try and rescue them and rehabilitate in our shelter or give away to eligible people for adoptions with monitoring followups.
One of the calves as above has contacted the T he foot and mouth disease Normally they would euthnasia but we have the formulae to help them to recover fully.

Rescue, Heal, Love: The VSPCA's Commitment to Animal Welfare:
------------------------------------------------------------------------
The VSPCA (Visakhapatnam Society for the Protection and Care of Animals) received a distressing call from the Andhra University area about a dog that was suffering from a deep cut on its leg. The concerned caller reported that the poor animal was in a lot of pain and in an urgent need of help.

Without wasting any time, the VSPCA team swung into action. They quickly gathered their medical supplies and rushed to the location provided by the caller. Upon reaching the spot, they found the injured dog lying huddled in a corner, whimpering in agony.

The team carefully examined the dog's wound and realized that it was indeed a deep cut that required immediate attention. They gently lifted the injured dog and transferred the poor dog to the VSPCA shelter, where a dedicated veterinarian was waiting to provide the necessary treatment.

The vet cleaned and dressed the wound and administered the necessary treatment. The dog's condition was critical, but the VSPCA team was determined to do everything to save the animal's life. The team made sure to provide the dog with plenty of food, water, and love during his recovery period.

Day by day, the dog showed signs of improvement. His wound began to heal, and his spirits lifted as he received gentle care and attention from the VSPCA team. Finally, after weeks of dedicated treatment and care, the dog made a full recovery.

The VSPCA team was overjoyed to see the once-injured dog now running and playing happily in the shelter. They knew that their timely intervention had saved the precious life of a helpless dog and filled their hearts with satisfaction and gratitude.

Finally, the VSPCA ABC Team dropped him off where he picked up after completing Animal Birth Program and providing the Anti-Rabies Vaccination.

This heartwarming story is a testament to the VSPCA's unwavering commitment to animal welfare. Their tireless efforts and unwavering dedication to rescuing and caring for animals in need are truly inspiring, and this successful rescue is just one example of the incredible work they do every day.
