The Irish Wolfhound Ch. Arnold of Edgecliff died in December 1953 at more than 10 years of age — a good age for this breed. Arnold was a multiple BIS winner in the 1940s and both owned and bred by Thomas B. Wanamaker of Pasadena, California. The English import Sulhamstead Dan of Ambleside was four times in the first four generations of Arnold's pedigree. Arnold is known to have sired six AKC champions in his only three litters.

This last figure seems rather interesting.

Its inbreeding level calculated by IWDB over 10 generations is 2.82, while average COI worldwide over the last 10 years for 10 generations is 6.9%.

So DNA-verified heterozygosity would seem to be average, while that calculated on pedigree well below.

Do you think this data is of any importance in the breeding of the Irish wolfhound?

Until I have formed my own definitive idea on the subject, I am starting to collect and shelve data.
I feel a bit like planting a tree in my garden, which I will not be able to see in its full maturity.
