👉The POWER of CROSS-POLES!
⬆️Save the exercise!⬆️
⏩LEVEL:
🟡Easy-Medium
⏩SET UP:
2 poles, 2 cross-poles, 1 oxer made of cross-poles
⏩AIM:
The aim of this exercise is to get your horse to jump in the centre of the fences and achieve a better jump, by improving the front end and realizing a rounder bascule.
It is also suitable for young horses that are learning to maintain direction, as well as having the benefit of avoiding to over-jump the horse!
⏩PRO TIP:
Cross-poles are great to teach the horse to keep in the center of the jump and avoid twisting it’s body. This will help to develop a better jump. Over the fences there should be very little movement on your part in the air. Let your horse do the jumping and avoid throwing your body forward.
⏩FURTHER DIRECTIONS:
Let the entrance pole do it’s job: it is there to always enter the exercise correctly! Once on the pole you will only have to focus on your position: weight in the heels, quiet upper body, sit back and look up.
The 3 strides are meant to be slightly short, as to allow the horse to regain balance and impulsion. The rider should collect the canter by using his position. Once on the double, focus should be on a soft hand, so that the horse can fully express the jumps.

👉Improve COLLECTION and engage the HINDQUARTER to achieve an EXPLOSIVE JUMP!
⬆️Save the exercise!⬆️
⏩LEVEL:
🟢 All levels
⏩SET UP:
4 cavallettis or little verticals
⏩AIM:
The goal of this gymnastics exercise is to improve your horse’s collection, meaning a horse which is engaging his hindquarters whilst lightening his forehand. Also, the horse will have to coordinate his feet while compressing his body, making him more agile and explosive on the jumps! It can be adapted to any level of horse and rider by making slight changes, as it is beneficial for improving strength, suppleness and overall fitness.
⏩PRO TIP:
Depending on the age and experience of the horse, start with small cavallettis or vertical and raise them up to a maximum of 50-80cm.
The rider will have to focus on approaching the exercise at the correct speed and with a balances horse. When the horse is able to understand what is being asked, you can safely let him go and only maintain a soft contact on the rein and a light lower-leg aid. He will be able to rely less on the rider by being able to use himself. When doing the bounces, avoid getting in front of the horse. Leaning forward is not ideal since the horse will require space to raise his shoulders. Instead, take a light seat position.
⏩FURTHER DIRECTIONS:
The 4 strides are meant to come out short: this is because we want to create collection and engagement of the hindquarter. After the first set of bounces focus on asking your horse to shorten, without forcing him, instead use your position and aids.
Depending on the horse's experience and skills, you should adjust the 4 strides: it should feel short, but you shouldn’t have to fight.

✅Master your COMPETITION LINES and make your horse more CAREFUL with this simple exercise! ⬆️Save the exercise!⬆️
⏩LEVEL:
🟠Medium
⏩SET UP:
2 oxer, 2 poles
⏩AIM:
Do you ever feel like you have to fight to cover the lines? And by doing this your horse flattens and looses quality in his jump? Well, this is the perfect exercise for you!
This exercise works on both quality of your rhythm and stride as well as bascule over the jump. By practicing this line of 2 oxers at home, you will have great advantages during the competition, as you will be able to set the right canter for the lines as well as achieving rounder jumps throughout the course.
⏩PRO TIP:
Remember that courses are designed to be ridden from corner to corner, not jump to jump, this is why your direction is key when practicing at home in order to perform a correct and functional exercise at home.
Make sure you set up a good “competition canter” before your turn, using both your inside and outside leg to support your horse around the turn. Once in front of the line sit up tall and look up, jump over the first oxer, then focus on putting your weight in the stirrups and keeping your leg on through the 3 strides, aiming at giving a stronger pressure only before taking off for the final oxer. This doesn’t mean you have to chase your horse down the line: if you set up the correct canter before the exercise, you will only have to “guide” your horse out of the line!
⏩FURTHER DIRECTIONS:
Depending on the horse's experience and skills, the height of the fences might vary.
The factor that remains unchanged, however, is the use of two oxers to do this exercise. In fact, this is essential to achieve a correct stride extension while maintaining an explosive and round jump!

👉Achieve COLLECTION by keeping IMPULSION and BALANCE for a ROUNDER JUMP!
⬆️Save the exercise!⬆️
⏩LEVEL:
🟠Medium
⏩SET UP:
4 poles, 1 crosspole, 1 oxer
⏩AIM:
The goal of this exercise is to improve your horse’s collection, meaning a horse which is engaging his hindquarters whilst lightening his forehand. Correct collection means feeling generous impulsion and perfect balance: the horse will be accepting your hand, confidently pushing in front of you: the end result will be a rounder and explosive jump!
⏩PRO TIP:
Collection lets the rider rebalance the horse and repackage its energy as necessary for jumping tasks in which the horse must shorten his stride while maintaining impulsion. Schooling over gymnastic grids set with poles and oxers is an excellent way to develop a correct collection. In this case, the poles in front of the jumps help both the rider and horse to get an accurate distance, as well as achieving a balanced approach. The 4 strides are short and need a collected canter, but thanks to the initial bounce the collection can be easily set up. The same happens with the short 1 stride after the oxer, which will help the horse to slow down and come back on his hindquarters before the final pole.
⏩FURTHER DIRECTIONS:
You should focus on a correct approach to the first bounce, making sure you use leg before hand when collecting for the 4 stride and keep a soft hand on the poles before the oxer. After the fence, you should use your body to collect, focusing on keeping your weight in the stirrups. However, keep in mind that it will eventually be the horse that has to learn to retract!
Depending on the horse's experience and skills, the height of the fences might vary.

⏩Cavallettis in a circle: a simple set up to work on all major skills of horse and rider! ⤵️Save the exercise!
This exercise speaks to all the valuable elements of cavalletti work and trains the horse’s entire musculature. Moreover, it is suitable for horses of all ages and abilities, just by applying minimal adjustments!
👉BENEFITS👈
✅Maintaining longitudinal bend when going over the cavalletti on the circle is a real strength-builder.
✅The exercise teaches the horse to be soft and carry himself, while being responsive to the controls you are asking for.
✅It targets major areas like balance, suppleness and accuracy.
✅For the rider, it helps feel the rhythm of the strides and improve communication with the horse.
👉TIPS👈
🔹Start by doing only the two external cavallettis, working on keeping a regular rhythm and a soft bend. Proceed with one set of the “connected” cavallettis, working on achieving an even distance to your second cavalletti. When you are comfortable doing this, put the entire exercise together.
🔹Focus on achieving even strides between the cavallettis. You want the horse to stay on the same line, engaged and listening. It is also critical to always aim at the center of the cavallettis.
🔹Concentrate on the use of your aids: a slight inside bent should be achieved by correctly applying outside leg to an open inside rein, without pulling or forcing it.
👉Notes👈
❣️For a young, green or unexperienced horse we advise to use ground poles, starting of with 2 (the outside ones) and slowly working your way up to ad the 3rd pole.
❣️If you find the exercise too challenging, go back one step and concentrate on working on a simple circle without the poles maintaining a regular canter and a balanced and responsive horse.

👉Simple grid to improve RIDEABILITY and achieve a ROUNDER JUMP!
⬆️Save the exercise!⬆️
⏩LEVEL:
🟠Medium
⏩SET UP:
2 poles, 2 cavallettis, 1 oxer
⏩AIM:
The goal is to increase your horse's attention, rideability between jumps and achieve an improved bascule over the fence.
Thanks to the bounces at the beginning of the exercise, your horse will need to act quickly and will be more aware of his front end over the final oxer.
⏩PRO TIP:
The set-up of the exercise does the majority of the work. You should focus on entering the exercise with a good rhythm and balanced horse and be soft on the bounces. During the 3 strides you have to keep regularity in the stride, making sure your horse is listening to your aids. Once in front of the oxer’s placing pole keep the weight in your heels, look in front of you, applying a little pressure with your legs. Over the oxer give your hands to the mouth and keep a balanced seat, in order to encourage a free and correct jumping movement from your horse. The final fence will test the work done through the exercise!
⏩FURTHER DIRECTIONS:
Depending on the horse's experience and skills, the height of the fences might vary.
Especially when riding a younger or less experienced horse, you should take it slowly and gradually develop your grid. You don't want to overwhelm the horse right first, so go slow and steady in order to let your horse build confidence. Make sure you also allow your horse to take frequent breaks: this will not only be a physical benefit, but above all a mental one.

👉SWEDISH OXER to improve STRAIGHTNESS and JUMPING TECHNIQUE!
⬆️Save the exercise!⬆️
⏩LEVEL:
🟡Easy-Medium
⏩SET UP:
2 poles, 1 swedish oxer, 1 placing pole
⏩AIM:
The aim of this exercise is to get your horse to jump in the centre of the fences and achieve a better jump, by improving the front end and realizing a rounder bascule and
It is s very useful for horses that tend to twist on the jump, that have a flat and rushed jump and that do not collect properly on the hindquarters after the jump.
⏩PRO TIP:
The Swedish oxer has the effect of “holding” your horse’s attention to the centre of the first jump, both during takeoff, flight and landing. Moreover, the higher points on the sides also encourage the horse to pick his legs up higher.
We already talked about the importance and usefulness of placing poles, in this case the one after the jump helps the horse to correctly engage the hindquarters after landing in order not to lose power and impulsion between fences.
⏩FURTHER DIRECTIONS:
Let the poles do their work! Approach the exercises focusing on seeing your stride to the first pole. Once on the pole you will only have to focus on your position: weight in the heels, quiet upper body, sit back and look up. Over the jump there should be very little movement on your part in the air. Let your horse do the jumping and avoid throwing your body forward.
After the jump stay soft, remember the pole is there to help you!
The distance of the placing pole after the Swedish oxer must be adjusted according to the height of the jump itself.

⏩GET READY WITH US FOR OUR FIST INTERNATIONAL SHOW OF THE YEAR @equieffe!
Less than two weeks to go and we are feeling more excited than ever! Prima is in incredible shape, but we continue training to get even better!
👉Yesterday we did a great exercise which allows to work on the horses fitness, but without overtiring the body and the head!
The exercises is aimed at achieving:
❣️Direction: this is often overlooked, but it is essential to focus on direction as it can determine the success of your entire course! It is important to go straight before and after the jump, and to be careful not to cut your turns after the jumps!
✅A quick front end
✅A round and balanced jump
✅Regularity and suppleness
We definitely think Prima nailed it! 💪
❗️ Always make sure you create a training plan for your horses that gives you the opportunity to improve technique and strength, but without putting too much physical and mental strain on them!
⏩⏩⏩This is how you build the perfect showjumper!

⤵️Daily training with the youngsters - building a horse’s canter! 🐴💪
Have a look at one of our routine training session with our younger horses! Today, we are focusing on building a horse’s canter.
❣️This is fundamental when developing young showjumpers!
👉 Focus on building strength in canter can be challenging as young horses are typically weak in this area.
This exercise is a true lifesaver when working on this, also it will not overwork your horse!
✅When doing this exercise, the rider’s focus should be on keeping a good rhythm and a regular stride.
👉It will be your horse’s job to gradually find and keep a good balance, ultimately to be able to keep that regular stride at a good rhythm by himself.
Do not forget that this exercise can be super useful for less experienced horses as well! 💪
❣️Great execution of the exercise for SPRINGHI (Springstorm- Glasgow van't Merelsnest x Diamond Hit), although he is a bigger horse he is learning to coordinate and move his body like a pro! 🤩
⏩⏩⏩If you need the distances to set up the poles, or have any other question, do not hesitate to write us a comment! ❗️

⏩Technical Training: last course of fences before a show!
❣️Prima is definitely ready for her debut in the 7yo classes!
As our last training before the show, we practiced over a limited number of jumps, but focused on a few important aspects:
👉HEIGHT:
As we already said, always jumping big doesn’t bring any good. It is also true that it is important to include higher jumps in one's training from time to time. This is useful both for the rider, who will train his eye, and for the horse, who will have the opportunity to learn to correctly move his body on greater heights.
👉TECHNICALITIES:
Technical aspects, for example tight turns, rollback turns, bending lines and combinations, should be practiced at home, in order not to be unprepared during the competition.
👉”SPOOKY” FENCES:
These include different types of fillers, walls, planks and water trays. Getting your horses used and comfortable around them at home will mean less stress and unpleasant situations during the show!
Well, we are all set!
🔜Join us and follow Prima’s results during this weekend’s show at @scuderiedellamalaspina!
