Ocular manifestations are commonly discussed and typically occur alongside other systemic symptoms. However, it is rare for them to be the sole clinical abnormality identified.

The prevalence of ocular symptoms in dogs suffering from systemic leishmaniosis varies, as reported in five clinical studies, ranging from 16% to 80%. In some reports, blepharitis and keratoconjunctivitis are noted as the most frequently observed signs, while in other studies, anterior uveitis is found to be the most common. Other documented ocular manifestations encompass cyclitis, chorioretinitis, retinal detachment, keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS), cataract, glaucoma, and orbital cellulitis.

Corneal perforations may be due to continued progression of a corneal ulcer or descemetocele or trauma. In the acute phase, a fibrin plug may be present and impede further leakage of aqueous.

When determining is the defect is sealed, a Seidel test may be performed by applying a single drop of fluorescein directly on the site in question. Without irrigating the cornea, observe for aqueous to flow clearly through the fluorescein.

Thorough assessment of the emergency case with corneal damage is critical to determine if referral to an ophthalmologist is warranted to save vision or if irreparable damage necessitates salvage type procedures.

Between the causes of corneal ulcer in cat there are feline herpes virus-1 infection, entropion and trichiasis. Clinical features include central corneal necrotic degeneration with an amber or brown-black coloured plaque surrounded by a superficial corneal ulcer area, corneal neovascularization, and corneal oedema.
Symptoms and signs are represented by eye pain, blepharospasm and epiphora.
Although necrotic plaque can be solved with topical medical treatment, keratectomy is recommended in case of corneal sequestration plaque. In cases of superficial corneal sequestration additional grafts are not required; furthermore, when the lesion extends to the deep corneal stroma, surgical interventions, such as bulbar conjunctival flap, corneoconjunctival transposition, bio scaffold application using porcine intestinal submucosa (SIS); Vetrix BioSIS®), acellular porcine bladder submucosa (UBM; ACell Vet™) or amniotic membrane (AM) are available options after lamellar keratectomy.

What is retinal degeneration?

If your cat appears to have vision loss, based on a general ophthalmic examination that shows sluggish pupillary light responses and has dilated pupils, your veterinarian may suspect PRA. In early stages, it may be difficult to observe any obvious changes to the retina. As the disease progresses, examination of the back of the eye with an ophthalmoscope will show increased reflectivity of a portion of the retina called the 'tapetum lucidum', changes in the optic nerve, and changes in the retinal blood vessels.

Progressive retinal atrophy (PRA), is a group of degenerative diseases that affect these photoreceptor cells. With this disease, the cells deteriorate over time, eventually leading to blindness in the affected cat.

CED

What is endothelial corneal dystrophy?

It is a disease that affects some dog breeds, caused by a disorder of the corneal endothelium with accumulation of water in the stroma, causing opacity and formation of corneal ulcers.
