Pedro System: Final Tests Successfully Completed

As mentioned in our previous article, the Pedro System has successfully passed the mechanical tests conducted by the Polytechnic Institute. One final and crucial step remained before its clinical application: ex-vivo testing.

Ideally, we would have tested the different “sizes” of the system on multiple specimens simultaneously. However, it's not always possible to conduct such tests under identical conditions. We therefore carried out the trials at different times for each size of the spinal system.

These tests, in addition to validating the device's performance already confirmed in previous trials, were essential to assess the effectiveness of the dedicated surgical instruments and to refine the surgical procedure. Only during this phase is it truly possible to evaluate whether the tools and the proposed approach are optimal to ensure not only the success of the procedure, but also ease of use for the surgeons.

After completing the full round of testing on the spinal system, and thanks to close collaboration with several physicians, we were able to make final adjustments to the instrumentation to further optimize its performance.

The result? A high-quality system designed to be simple, reliable, and intuitive in the operating room.

Do you remember Chucky?
He was diagnosed with a neoplasm affecting the T11 vertebral body, which had also led to a pathological fracture.

Thanks to Dr. Omar Del Vecchio, Chucky underwent a successful surgery using Overvet’s Pedro System, with bilateral stabilization of T10 and T12.

We are proud to share the successful application of our PedroSystem small by Dr. Cristian Falzone, veterinary neurologist and neurosurgeon, in a highly complex surgical case.

A 4 kg poodle survived a fall from the third floor, suffering vertebral fractures and dislocations at L7-S1 and T13-L1.
The patient underwent bilateral stabilization using Ø2.0–2.7 mm screws, expertly managed with our PedroSystem.

This case highlights the precision, reliability, and adaptability of the PedroSystem—even in the most delicate patients.

In occasione di SCIVAC Rimini 2025, il più importante congresso nazionale di medicina veterinaria per piccoli animali, abbiamo avuto l’onore di essere ospitati da Alcyon Italia all’evento “La fissazione vertebrale con impianti poliaxiali con il nostro sistema PEDRO System®.

Un sentito ringraziamento al Prof. Dr. Massimo Baroni per la sua partecipazione al nostro evento e per aver condiviso i suoi interessanti casi chirurgici e follow-up a due anni dal primo impianto, realizzati proprio con il nostro sistema.

Come documentato dallo stesso Prof. Baroni, l’applicazione del Pedro System anche nella traumatologia del rachide apre nuove e significative prospettive cliniche, estendendone il potenziale anche per i colleghi ortopedici.

🔹 Challenging Case | Advanced Spinal Surgery with Pedro System 🔹

Dr. Lucas Smolders recently performed a complex spinal stabilization on an 11-year-old Rhodesian Ridgeback suffering from progressive spinal ataxia and a right-sided nerve root signature.

➡️Diagnosis:
End-stage degenerative lumbosacral stenosis, with severe L7-S1 disc protrusion and bilateral foraminal stenosis.

➡️Surgical Solution:
Lumbosacral distraction and stabilization performed using the Pedro System, an advanced spinal fixation technique:
- 2 polyaxial screws in L7
- 4 screws in the sacrum (2 in S1, 2 in S2)
- 2 transarticular screws

The Pedro System allowed for effective distraction and stabilization, decompressing the neural structures and restoring spinal alignment. The goal is to improve the patient's quality of life by addressing both pain and mobility challenges.

Congratulations to Dr. Smolders and the team at Bessy's Tierklinik for their outstanding work in advanced veterinary neurosurgery.

Dr. Omar Del Vecchio achieves another successful case using our Pedro System, the advanced system for stabilization and spatial distraction in veterinary spinal surgery.

The patient, affected by a neoplasm involving the vertebral body of T11 with a pathological fracture of the same, underwent bilateral stabilization surgery between T10 and T12.

The procedure was performed with extreme precision thanks to the Pedro System, which enabled the restoration of spinal stability despite the complexity of the clinical condition.

In the video, the patient can be seen 36 hours post-surgery, already showing promising condition and in the recovery phase.

A special patient, a 5-year-old mixed-breed dog weighing 26 kg, arrived at the Croce Azzurra Veterinary Clinic - Empoli with severe paraplegia after falling into a ravine.

➡️Diagnosis: Thoracolumbar luxation associated with a fragmentary T11-T12 fracture.
➡️Surgery: Using the innovative PedroSystem technique, realignment and bilateral fixation with polyaxial screws were performed to stabilize the spine.
➡️Goal: To restore spinal stability and improve the patient’s quality of life.

A major achievement for veterinary surgery and a concrete hope for all four-legged friends suffering from severe spinal conditions!

Continuing the story behind the development of Pedro System: today we talk about the first mechanical tests.

Confident in the project – now nearing its final stages – we were preparing to face one of the most delicate milestones: the notorious fatigue tests on the spinal system components we had developed over the previous 24 months.

These tests were crucial for getting the green light to move forward to the next phase: the first cadaver trials.

Even though the software simulations had yielded positive results, a hint of doubt always lingers in a designer’s mind. For the fatigue study, we conducted three load-unload cycles, also considering the worst-case scenario: vertebrectomy. This extreme condition – outlined in the ASTM F1717 standard – simulates a situation where the spinal fixator must withstand the entire load of the spine.

We then compared this setup with the more physiological model proposed by ISO 12189. The results were quite revealing: to achieve the same stress state, the vertebrectomy model only requires one-fifth of the load needed in the physiological model.

Although these specifications were designed for human anatomy, in the absence of equivalent veterinary studies, we extended this criterion to the canine model as well.

After two intense days of testing, the lab at the Politecnico gave us the green light: ✅ the first real test was passed.

A major milestone had been reached. And the path toward innovation kept moving forward.
