The sand dunes of Aburd (Bayan Ojuul) stretch as far as the eye can see. This somewhat lifeless landscape is an exceptional taxonomic laboratory. Here, our herpetologists and entomologists spend hours monitoring every inch of sand looking for reptiles and invertebrates. Surprisingly, this place gives a lot of fun even to carnivore ecologists. In fact, many predators are known to use this area for foraging or dispersal.

In 2015, during our first snow leopard camera trapping survey in Silkhem B National Park, horses were undoubtedly our most precious allies. Every day we made our way through a deep snow layer, looking for snow leopard signs for about 20 km. Temperatures were dropping as low as -15 °C and our backpacks were heavy with camera traps. What a time to be alive!

The Gobi bear (Ursus arctos gobiensis) managed to thrive in the Gobi Desert exclusively thanks to the presence of a few small waterholes (about ten are known) and few oases. Only a few tenth of bear are left in this area, and successful conservation measure will have to tackle their demand for food and water in an increasingly warming climate.

Parental care in snow leopards lasts about 18-20 months. Sub-adult snow leopards remain with their mothers until a few months before independence. Starting this period, they start to spend more and more time on their own, visiting their mother once in some days. When this period is over, they disperse to look for their own territories.

This Pallas’s cat pelt was photographed in Tavan Bogd Protected Area, in the Mongolian Altai. We felt disheartened to see how poaching and hunting affect many of the species found in the area. Claws and skins of bear and wolverine are often exhibited with great pride.

This Pallas’s cat was photographed near a precipice a dozen meters high. If we had deployed our camera in any of the other nearby passages, we would never have obtained a photo shot. In fact, it creeps under very low shelters, particularly during the daytime, when birds of prey are active.

The most efficient way to monitor Pallas’s cats is to look for these small isolated outcrops, surrounded by steppe environment.

Mandakh is our conservation biologist in Bayan Onjuul, where we have been monitoring Pallas’s cat and other 30 mammals for many years. Mandakh has a Bachelor degree in Ecology, and she provides a remarkable contribution to Wildlife Initiative, being born and raised in that area!

For the first time in 10 years our field station has been moved close to the mountain where we investigate Pallas’ cat ecology. The proximity to the camera trapping sites and the milder wind exposure conditions have allowed us to work certainly better than in the past.

Nomad people move their gers three to eight times in a year, looking for fertile pastures. Sometimes they travel close to the few outcropping mountains in the steppe, to seek shelter from strong and frozen winds.

Human-elephant conflicts have increased exponentially over the last two decades and they are likely to worsen given the pressures from an increasing human population on the whole African continent. During the dry season, elephants endure long migrations and seek out waterholes near human settlements and crops.

Clashes often result in casualties on both sides. In 2022, Wildlife Initiative will be committed to the mitigation of such conflicts.

Ed eccolo qua!

Rodent populations are prone to wide fluctuations.

The Mongolian gerbil (Meriones unguiculatus) has probably one of the most constant populations in the habitats encompassed by our working areas, being always present, but never showing population outbreaks.

It is also the only species brave enough to visit our tent at night!

Since March 2019, Wildlife Initiative has been collecting data to better understand Pallas’s cat ecology and its population densities!

Mongolian details.
Mongolia is a mystic land and thanks its countryside nomads and their traditional lifestyle.
The pillar shown here is an element present in each Mongolian’s Ger, representing part of the Mongolian culture.
We could say it literally supports their traditions.
Do you know what is its function?

Uno dei predatori naturali del gerbillo

An image of Pallas’s Cat captured by our camera trap in a typical narrow passage between the open steppe and a rocky area.
When working on a species in a confined area, for a long period, you start to recognize every single subject. With the Pallas’s Cat, every single caption is a different facial expression.
This is one of the reasons why “Manul” is a so charismatic species, unfortunately still relatively unknown for the vast public.

March 2019, Central Mongolia.
Between winter and spring, when snow is melted but harsh conditions persist, the landscape is painted by a warm palette of yellow, orange, okra, overhung by an endless blue sky lighting up everything.
Whereas in the evening, just before dusk the shadows reveal the old wrinkles telling us the story behind the endless landscape.
In such moments, you can feel earth's breathing and its heart pulsing in a synchrony with the wildlife living on it.
Do we need any other reasons to spend our time discovering and protecting our lands?

Mongolian silver vole (Alticola semicanus).
Another little species easy to observe between the rocks, where it takes cover when threatened. This vole lives in colonies under boulders, while forages in open spaces. Droppings accumulated under the rocks is a typical sign of its presence.
