Un-intended consequences. We often talk about loose lead walking in classes - it’s so much more pleasant for you and your dog and is a real life skill that requires practice. It also means granny can let her 11kg, 18 month old grandchild walk with her 90kg bear

Diary of Gosh - age 11 months weight over 60kg!

Where has time gone?
The puppy is now a pro at travelling as we have been back and forth to the UK a few times to do various things and he is a joy to travel with and to visit places but all of a sudden we have had to go back a few steps in training.

Testosterone! Teenager! cloth ears! what's that smell? GIRLS!

The joy of having a young male dog is that around this age their brains fall out of their ears as they get the huge flush of testosterone coursing through their system it will start to balance out around 18 months and should be at appropriate levels around the age of 2 - it's about now that all of a sudden their previously reliable recall appears to be broken and you think they might need a hearing test because they are completely ignoring you while their nose is stuck to that smell. Other dogs may start to react differently to your dog - this can be due to your dog now giving off mixed signals - still puppy in some mannerisms but smelling like a male and possibly even some posturing of a male - for those that have had teenage humans this is the voice breaking, hurling themselves around, lynx Africa times.

How are we going to get through it? lots of breathing and muttering to myself that this will pass and sorry mate you are back on lead and practice, practice, practice. Giving lots of attention and praise for the basics - yes I know he should be able to walk pass that pretty girl dog without too much difficulty but at the moment she is just the most delicious thing ever so if he needs to stop and stare after her with longing for a moment that's fine. I will acknowledge how pretty she is and then we move on.

Giving him more challenging things to do and working the brain - he'd much rather not think and just act on impulse so I'm starting to try to stretch his skills - not always successfully but we keep going and helps him focus on something other than his furry plums.

Little story for your entertainment.

Where we stay in the UK I have the use of a secure dog walking field which has a pond and areas to play scent games and hide and seek. It's single family use and there is a nice big sign to use that says vacant or occupied.

Gosh and I were in there, we were playing games and he was in and out of the pond when he went from stock still to flat out in the blink of an eye and there was one terrified small fluffy dog faced by my hulking teenager who thought Christmas had come early. The owner finally looked up from her phone to spot Gosh bouncing up and down and me legging it in hot pursuit. There was a little wrestling and dog wrangling after the lady pick up up dog and Gosh lost his brains completely. More by luck than anything else he didn't jump up at her or knock her over and she finally managed to get out of the walking area - moral of story - don't keep scrolling or texting when you are walking your dog because you never know where a bear might be lurking and I now hook my lead around the gate just in case

"Get them WET*, Off to the VET"

Recently there has been lots of sharing of very poor advice about how to treat heat stroke in dogs and some of it has been downright dangerous.

UP TO DATE advice is
* Get someone to call your vet - their number should be stored on your phone
* Cool dog by one of the following methods - Cold water immersion - pouring cold buckets of water all over the dog - cold hosing (run hose first away from dog until it cold)
* Get them out of the direct sun, if you can, into shade while transport is sorted
* As soon as you can transport to vet in an an air-conditioned car - if your aircon doesn't work open all the windows fully to create a breeze - your comfort doesn't really matter at this point

Heat stroke is always a medical emergency and it's not just about dogs in hot cars - it can be the elderly lab sunbathing in the garden or the young dog running on the dunes when we have high humidity.

Information about heatstroke in dogs and cats including signs of heatstroke in pets and first aid for heat stroke in pets

I'm back! so prepare for 'boring and educational post'. This is especially for our first time puppy/dog owners and a gentle reminder for our more experienced friends

It's Whiskered grass time - that means those hard oat/wheat/barley type grasses that can cause dogs all sorts of issues if they pe*****te up between the toes, into the ears, up nasal cavities and through the skin.

Daily post walk checks will be needed for the next few weeks while the seed is ripening and dropping so it's a really good time to practice your co-operative care. All dogs could pick up a seed so don't think a hard short coat will be immune. The trickiest coats will be the poodle/spaniel ones as their hair can mat around the seed causing a sore if the seed hasn't pe*****ted the skin.

If a seed has gone in you might be able to feel the whisker bit - don't try and pull it out yourself you risk it breaking off - it is a vet job as once in the seed can wander about and emerge anywhere.
