Those ears though!
Not only is Archie the Hautlieu School support dog, he's also an agility superhero.
Just because he has one job, doesn't mean he can't have hobbies.

Agility Sessions returning.
Saturdays in October.
Scentwork.
It doesn't have to be a formal sport. With ribbons. And judges.
It can just be something you do on your walk.
To make your dog's life more fun.
More enriching.
More interesting.
This is Poppy.
With her classmates.
On our Puppy Adventure Course.
At the beach. Around people. Other dogs.
In a real world environment.
Training must be functional.
Otherwise it's not training.
Is your GSD always on alert?
Good.
They're supposed to be.
Shepherd dogs that weren't alert, didn't get bred with.
Play with the dog. Then let them watch.
Leo likes to watch people and dogs.
Because he's a nosey bu**er.
Swimming.
Like any new activity, it's taught at the rate the dog allows. Not the rate you think they should learn.
Build the dog's confidence slowly.
And get in the water with the dog.
Skin is waterproof. Clothes dry.
Play with the dog.

A working breed needs to work.
Leo may not be a Police dog anymore but he still has a job.
Taking down hardened criminals.
Like Katie from Active Dog - Behaviour & Training.
Why have a gym membership?
When you have a labrador.
And Mantrailing exists.
Mental enrichment. Scentwork. Physical exercise.
All outdoors for Vitamin D and all that good stuff.
Like running a marathon whilst reading a book.
Mantrailing Workshops in September.
Mantrailing 1:1s available in August.
Does your dog need to know "chair" as a command?
Not really.
But if you have a toddler running around.
Like a little hooligan.
Then having a word that means "hop up out the way buddy" is useful.
Origin Story.
Tibetan Mastiff.
58,000 years.
According to phylogenetic analysis this is the time that the Grey Wolf and Tibetan Mastiff split.
42,000 years.
The same studies showed this is the approximate divergence time between other domestic dogs and the wolf.
So Tibetan Mastiffs are one of the oldest (if not the oldest) breeds.
Does it matter when you're training them?
Yes.
They will only respond to words in ancient Tibetan languages.
And are well-versed in early Buddhist teachings.
A dog's life is like a puzzle. There are many pieces.
Exercise. Nutrition. Training.
The missing piece for most dogs?
Scentwork.
Locating food, items or people with their nose.
How are you adding scentwork into your dog's life?
Next Origin Scentwork Bronze in August. Register interest now.
Wet afternoon.
Typical Jersey Summer.
A new game.
Send the dog to the tent. Meant for the toddler.
Then hide in the house.
Call the dog.
Hours of fun.
Throwback Thursday.
That time Leo located a victim's mobile phone that had been stolen.
The suspect had ran off and thrown it.
Leo located it via the scent alone searching a large area of Les Quennevais.
Want to teach your dog to find your phone?
August Scentwork 1:1s now available.
Your dog has a thermal imaging camera for a nose.
Not only can they find food and other odours but a dog's nose can detect thermal radiation.
The body heat of mammalian prey.
It's because of the dog's rhinaria.
The wrinkled bit at the front of the nose. It's moist and colder than the ambient temperature.
So your dog can smell the heat of your dinner as well as the scent.
No wonder they beg at the dinner table.
My dog is lively. My dog is boisterous. My dog is anxious.
One word doesn't describe your dog. Or you.
Your dog has a personality. A multi-faceted personality.
This is Leo ⬇️ a scary Police dog that found and bit criminals.
And a goof ball.
Scent Detection.
There are many ways to teach it. There are many things for dogs to find.
We start with red Kong. It has it's own distinctive smell.
Once your dog can do this we introduce cash, drugs and fi****ms.
The three things needed for a good summer BBQ.
Neurons that fire together, wire together.
A phrase first used by Donald Hebb, a Canadian Neuropsychologist in 1949.
Every experience, thought and feeling triggers thousands of neurons. Little mental fireworks in the brain.
When you repeat an experience over and over, the brain learns to trigger the same neurons each time.
Which is how dogs recall information.
It's how Leo learned his name. Learned to focus.
This is why you practice. Again and again.
To keep firing the neurons.
So they wire together.
98.8
The percentage that dogs and wolves share genes.
We can use some aspects of wolf behaviour when training the dog.
The fact they're social animals. The fact they're facultative carnivores. The fact prey drive exists.
But the dog is not a wolf.
98.8 is also the genetic percentage that we share with chimpanzees.
This is Tilly.
Challenge: Puppy Biting
Solution: Outlets
Your child loves football. Obsessed. Wants to play in the house. All of the time.
So.
You go to the park. Play with them. Tire them out. Improve your bond.
Provide an outlet.
Puppy biting is the same.
Provide an outlet.
Tug-E-Nuff toys are a good start.
Available at K9 Wellness Centre
This is Ludo.
Challenge: Nervousness
Solution: Scentwork
Ludo is a nervous dog. He's a little scared of the hoover in the utility room.
He used to stay away. Now he happily passes it to forage.
Hiding food in snuffle boxes.
Encouraging sniffing.
Making food fun.
Have you tried rabbit balls?
Not an Asian delicacy.
A ball coated in rabbit fur.
The rope means you can play tug. The ball means you can throw it.
The rabbit fur makes it enticing.
Turns out the perfect toy does exist.
This is Archie.
He's another dog on our Side By Side Program.
Archie used to pull like a steam train. He might not be giving perfect focus. That will come.
But he's not pulling either.
This was Archie's handler after the first session;
"So I think I took the wrong dog home this morning as I’ve just taken Archie on a long walk n tye short lead and wow he pulled a little at first and so I kept stopping with him and then rewarding him and he picked it up very quickly and it was the most pleasant walk that I’ve been on since getting Archie as a puppy 4 years ago!!"

Training the dog. Walking the dog. They're the same thing. Training isn't an extra. And it's not a luxury. It's done on your walk. As part of play time. Making your walk energising. Engaging. Enjoyable. For you. And the dog. #playwiththedog
Life gives you no certificate. You never finish training the dog. Why? Communication. Dog training is communicating with your dog. Dogs are a social creature. So need to be communicated with. They want to be trained. Do it through play? Even better. #playwiththedog

This is Bobbie. Challenge: Lead Pulling Solution: Video Bobbie and her handler signed up to the Side By Side Course; teaching the dog to walk next to you. In between each session, the handlers record their training and send it to us. So they get feedback. And know they're on the right track.
This is Nala. Challenge: Barking at dogs Solution: Interrupt Nala barks at dogs. And rushes to get to them. Doesn't matter if it's friendly. Other dogs won't like it. So her handlers let her sit and chill. They read her body language. Watch is good. Alert is good. But before the bark. Or the sprint to say hello. They interrupt.

Dopamine. The neuromodulatory molecule your dog is obsessed with. Knowing you're going to get dopamine gives you dopamine. The anticipation factor. Which is why we reward early with recall. Build up the reward. Think of it this way; You here the wine bottle pop, your dopamine builds. Just like Indy here ⬇️ sound on.
