Earlier today, the researchers and management of the Veterinary Science Research Institute, Muguga, Kenya held a consultative meeting with the Kiambu County Secretary and Chief Officer Cooperatives to brainstorm on how to harness assisted reproductive techniques for the improvement of fertility and production in Kiambu County. The Chief Officer and his technical counterpart the County Director of Veterinary Services were delighted by the level of expertise on Assisted reproductive techniques and the Mobile ART lab domiciled at the VSRI.

The two teams resolved to progressively work on areas of interest to improve the dairy subsector in Kiambu as a model for other counties. This will be achieved by harnessing the potential of ART, retooling AI service providers and training farmers on heat detection, fertility and clean safe milk production.
Much appreciation to the VSRI Institute Director Monicah Maichomo, County Secretary Mr. Peter Ndegwa and the CDVS Dr Samwel Njuguna.

Such partnerships have the potential to ensure government agencies and County governments deliver optimally to their constituents.

This past week, Veterinary Science Research Institute, Muguga, Kenya partnered with the Kenya Veterinary Association (KVA) in the annual KVA conference and World Veterinary Day celebrated in Isiolo county. This conference is of paramount importance to Kenyan Veterinarians and the animal health industry as it brings together various stakeholders in Animal Health to share scientific insights and developments. Our scientists made 3 presentations:
1️⃣AMR development and tranfer in the livestock production environment
2️⃣Mastitis
3️⃣Helminth management in sheep

It was a great pleasure to interact with veterinarians, exhibit our research work as well as offer veterinary services to pastoralist communities in Isiolo. The theme of this year was 'Veterinarians are essential health workers'. During this event, the association also transitioned its leadership.

This is an annual event with the World Veterinary Day (WVD) celebrated every last Saturday of April. The next WVD will take place on 26.4.2025 in Kisumu city, Kenya

Veterinary Science Research Institute, Muguga, Kenya was excited to be represented at the 4th International One Health Conference. The theme of the conference is: One Health university networks in advancing global health security: developing workforce and fighting antimicrobial resistance in the era of climate change. The conference has been exciting and fulfilling.

The network then launched the awesome AFROHUN Academy. This is an accredited entity offering training programs and cutting-edge research, along with vibrant communities of practice, to empower students to gain focused career skills in just weeks, instead of years.

Additionally, the was officially launched.

In the recent past our institute has been a strategic partner to AFROHUN for faculty placement for research as well as student job shadowing to gain skills on One Health in practice. We hope to advance and better this partnership moving forward.

Today was a culmination of 3 day sessions where our institute engaged with a leading producer of livestock diagnostics MV DIAGNOSTICS, LLC. It has been a period of familiarising with our strengths and Leveraging on our potential synergies.
During the closeout meeting, we had round table discussions with colleagues from the Kabete,
and Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT)_DHARC.
We had great insights on possible areas of collaboration on Diagnostics, Data Analytics and Digital Health.
These were demand driven areas identified following small holder farmer visits yesterday in Kiambu County.

The COVID-19 pandemic did shake the world. The frequency of disease outbreaks weaken health systems and make countries vulnerable. This particularly affects LMICs.

Kenya as an LMIC is determined to change her story. We at Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organization - Veterinary Science Research Institute, Muguga, Kenya joined a multidisciplinary and multisectoral team at the &_Resorts _Westlands to develop the country proposal in response to the pandemic call:
https://www.worldbank.org/en/programs/financial-intermediary-fund-for-pandemic-prevention-preparedness-and-response-ppr-fif

Under this funding, Kenya hopes to prepare her health systems to respond to public health events in all sectors promptly to avert serious effects. The 3 day meeting is supported by World Health Organization among other partners

It was pleasant hosting Scientists and managers from USDA National centers for Animal Health based in Iowa USA. Our teams engaged in a conversation of mutual interest in conducting research on Mycoplasma infections particularly CBPP which is a transboundary disease of great animal health and economic significance

The discussions were centered around KALRO - VSRI and BIORI hosting Animal trials for candidate vaccines for Mycoplasma.
The trials will involve subunit vaccines and genetically modified vaccines involving Mannhimia haemolytica a respiratory bacteria and Mycoplasma mycoides mycoides.

Yesterday the 6.7.23, the Institute Director Dr. Monicah Maichomo led KALRO specifically the Veterinary Science Research Institute at the official launch of the KALRO - BROOKE report on the contribution of the donkey on the dairy value chain.

The study was conducted in Nyandarua, Bomet and West Pokot counties. The study documents that donkeys transport 5.5 million liters of milk worth Kes 196 million. This is an immense contribution as the donkey helps farmers reduce post-harvest losses as without the donkeys, most of this milk may not get to milk cooling points.

Who we are

The Veterinary Research Institute is one of the Institutes under the Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organization (KALRO) established under the KALRO Act of 2013. Research on animal diseases in East Africa was first initiated in 1938 when a Central Veterinary Research Institute was established at Kabete. In 1949, it was decided that all the research aspects dealing with the greater East Africa be moved to a new site at Muguga whose construction was completed in 1954. It was then known as the East African Research Organization (EAVRO) under the auspices of the East African Common Services Organization (EACSO) which later became the East African Community (EAC). With the collapse of the EAC in 1977, the Centre was absorbed into the Ministry of Agriculture and renamed the Veterinary Research Department (VRD) and in 1986 it was brought under KARI as the National Veterinary Research Centre (NVRC).
