HEAT STRESS IN DOGS & OTHER DOMESTIC ANIMALS.

Lately the Environmental temperatures have been high.

This can result in a heat stroke : a situation when elevated body temperatures increase above 41°C without previous signs of illness are most commonly associated with exposure to excessive external or environmental heat

This can interfere with several physiological and Biochemical processes in body. In the end especially if it reaches a critical temperature (41.2°C to 42.7°C) this leads to multiple organ failure and impending death if there are no timely interventions.

Signs of heatstroke in dogs

✓Increased breathing rates
✓ Dry or sticky gums
✓ abnormal gum color
bruising in the gums
✓May appear lethargic or disoriented
✓Seizures.

Common Causes heat stroke in dogs

✓ Leaving a dog in a car with inadequate ventilation.

✓ Leaving your dog/ animals in the yard without access to shade and/or water on a hot day

✓ Exposure to a hair dryer for an extended period of time

✓Excessive or vigorous exercise during hot temperatures.

✓Dogs breeds with a restricted airway ( brachycephalic breeds)

✓ Dogs that are muzzled for a long time are at a greater risk since their ability to pant is restricted by the muzzle. (Dogs primarily regulate temperature by panting

TIPS

• Provide CLEAN DRINKING WATER at all times.

• Provide appropriate and suitable SHELTER/KENNEL for animals/Dogs

• For tethered animals - AVOID EXCESSIVE exposure to the sun.

Picture1: This is a sample of maize( notice it is mouldy) that was used to feed three dogs . After some time the dogs developed inappetence, lethargy, black colored diarrhea,yellow mucous membranes, signs consistent with AFFLATOXIN POISONING.

Picture 2: The dogs did not survive and on postmortem, the liver was characteristically all yellow.

IMPORTANT NOTE:Domestic dogs are very susceptible to afflatoxin and their tolerance levels very low.

It is important to:
1. Feed dogs quality food that is not mouldy.
2. Store the dog food properly to avoid contamination
3. Source dog food from reputable places.

Tom a 24 month old GSD, was reported to have a progressively & persistent non weight bearing lameness of the right hind limb for close to a month.
His daddy called us for attention and on radiographic examination, it was established that he a condition called femoral head subluxation ( circled in blue)

Femoral head osteotomy is the surgical procedure indicated combined with dietary & lifestyle adjustments for management of this case.
