Did you know that there are over 500 species of Shark?

…and each and every one is uniquely adapted to their environment? From the small, bioluminescent Lantern Shark to the massive, filter-feeding Whale Shark, the diversity of Sharks is absolutely mind blowing 🤯

This insane diversity is one of the countless reasons that people like myself feel so frustrated by the unfair portrayal of Sharks as dangerous, man-eating monsters - when in reality this sensationalised image couldn’t be further from the truth!

So let’s bust some myths!

The Reality:

🦈 Rare Attacks: Shark attacks on humans are extremely rare. You’re more likely to get killed by a toaster (…yes you read that right) than to encounter a shark attack! Most sharks are not interested in humans and prefer to avoid us.

🦈 Essential Predators: Sharks play a vital role in maintaining the health of marine ecosystems. As apex predators, they help regulate the populations of other marine species, ensuring a healthy, balanced and thriving ocean environment.

🦈 Diverse and Fascinating: With over 500 species, sharks come in all shapes and sizes, each with unique adaptations that have allowed them to thrive for millions of years. They are marvels of evolution that pre-date trees and dinosaurs, not villains.

🦈 At Risk: Many shark species are threatened by overfishing, habitat loss, climate change and targeted hunting. The fear-mongering narratives contribute to a lack of empathy and urgency in protecting these essential creatures.

Let’s change the narrative and celebrate the wonders of Sharks. They deserve our respect and protection, not fear and misrepresentation.
