Protect Your Dog from Ticks, Mites, and Fleas!

Pests, especially ticks, mites, and fleas pose health risks to dogs. They vary from mild effects like itching and discomfort to serious risks such as anaemia. Here's what you need to know to keep your dog safe.

How Pests Affect Dogs

**Ticks**: They transmit diseases like Lyme disease, which lead to anaemia, lethargy, and other health complications.

**Mites**: Mites can cause mange, resulting in intense itching, hair loss, and skin infections.

**Fleas**: Fleas cause itching and can lead to anaemia if there is a large infestation, especially in puppies.

Tell-Tale Signs of Infestation

**Ticks**: Excessive scratching, visible ticks, skin irritation, lethargy.

**Mites**: Intense itching, patchy hair loss, crusty skin.

**Fleas**: Frequent scratching, flea dirt, red bumps.

Treatment and Prevention

- Regular Checks: Inspect your dog frequently and wash once every 1-2 months

- Clean Environment: Maintain cleanliness in your dog’s living area. Keep grass short.

- Use pest treatments; there are very many viable treatments for pest control on dogs.
I am still doing research and experimenting various solutions. In the meantime, you can check with your agrovet.
If you already have pest treatment solutions, please share! What do you use?

DOES YOUR DOG DIG HOLES IN YOUR COMPOUND? 5 WAYS TO STOP IT.

Why do dogs dig holes?

There are many reasons why dogs dig holes, here are the most common;
Entertainment
Hiding food
Searching for prey such as moles
Comfort; cooling down on a hot day
Escape; in search of a mate
Whelping

It's important to understand that digging is an instinctive canine behaviour. Digging could be seen as much a part of dog behaviour as barking.

That being said, it is possible to minimise the impact of this behaviour.

HOW TO STOP YOUR DOG FROM DIGGING.
The first thing you must do is figure out why your dog is digging.

Is your dog pregnant? Then it's probably making a safe place to raise its puppies.

Is the dog digging along the fence? It's probably trying to get out of the compound.

Does your dog lie in the hole it has dug? It's probably trying to keep cool.

Whatever the reason you need to find it in order to react appropriately.

Here are 5 ways to stop your dog from digging. Pick the ones that best fit your situation.

Adequate mental and physical exercise.

If you have a fairly sized compound letting your dog out either during the day or at night should be sufficient. If you have a small compound or no compound you may have to take your dog for walks…ideally twice a day.

Secure your compound.
For mesh fences ensure the base of the fence is secured with concrete to keep the dogs from digging.

Prepare a whelping area in advance for your pregnant dog and introduce the dog to it early. If the area prepared is comfortable enough the dog should not have the urge to dig holes.

Keeping your dog cool by providing shaded areas during the day. High temperatures can be especially uncomfortable for long coated dogs, providing shaded areas can offer enough relief to keep them from digging.

The best way to keep your dog from digging everywhere is actually to have one place where you allow and even encourage it to dig and then discourage it from digging everywhere else.

Do this by deciding on where you will allow it to dig and then frequently bury bones in that area. This encourages it to dig there. Anytime it digs elsewhere fill the hole with dog p**p and cover it; this discourages it from digging there again. If you do this for sometime the dog should end up just digging in the designated area.

What do you think, how do you keep your dogs from digging?

Let's talk about dog washing.

Every dog gets dirty at its own rate so the frequency of washing will vary; younger dogs get dirty more often but this generally reduces as the dog matures.

It's common to wash a dog too often…typically try and wash your dog only when necessary; if it gets dirty or for flea/pest control. This will be different based on each owner's situation but about once every 1-2 months in my experience has been ideal. Washing too often oversensitises the dog's skin by stripping it of its natural oils.

Before washing you can brush the dog to remove dead and excess hair as well as dirt.
Sabuni ya kipande works well for cleaning.Wet the dog thoroughly and rub in the soap until the coat lathers. Scrub with a soft to moderately hard brush.

In the event of fleas, mites or ticks…rinse out the soap with acaricide diluted in water(follow the instructions on the bottle typically its 20 ml of acaricide to 20l of water). Follow this with a thorough rinse with water to remove the acaricide.

Let the dog out to dry. Feel free to brush the dog as it dries.

LETS TALK ABOUT DEWORMING.

Why do we deworm dogs?
Gastrointestinal problems: Worms residing in the intestines can cause symptoms such as diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and discomfort.
Nutritional deficiencies: Worms compete with the dog for nutrients, which can lead to nutritional deficiencies, weight loss, and poor growth, particularly in puppies and young dogs.
Anemia: Hookworms and whipworms can cause blood loss through the intestinal tract, leading to anemia, characterized by pale gums, weakness, and fatigue.

How do dogs get worms?
Ingesting contaminated soil or f***s: Dogs may accidentally ingest parasite eggs or larvae while sniffing, licking, or eating contaminated soil, f***s, or surfaces.
Fleas and ticks: Some parasites, such as tapeworms, can be transmitted to dogs through the ingestion of infected fleas or ticks.
Maternal transmission: Puppies can acquire certain types of worms from their mother during gestation or through her milk during nursing.

Signs my dog may have worms?
Visible worms in f***s or vomit.
Changes in appetite.
Weight loss.
Diarrhea or vomiting.
Lethargy.
Potbellied appearance.
Itching or scooting: Dogs with tapeworms may experience itching around the a**s or scoot their bottoms along the ground to reduce discomfort.

How do I deworm my dog?
In my experience dogs should be dewormed every 3-4 months or 3-4 times a year.
When buying a dewormer look for one containing praziquantel as it is effective against most worms. But typically going to an agrovet nearby and asking for a dewormer for your dog will work, be sure to specify your dog's weight.
The most widely available form of dewormer comes in tablet form. To deworm your dog open its mouth gently and place the tablet as far back as possible. Do it in a cleared and well lit area such that if the tablet isn't swallowed you will know.
This typically is not a comfortable experience for the dog so expect some resistance especially if it is not used to being dewormed; as it becomes used deworming the process becomes easier.
