If you are transplanting your bulb onion seedlings this rainy season ,make sure you dip the seedlings roots in a carbendazim based fungicide.
-This will avoid your seedlings from damping off (rot).
Remember bulb onions will take 45days in the nursery and the key point is how you will transplant the seedlings.
Make sure you don't plant too deep otherwise your onions won't bulb or will have a bottle shape bulbs.
Onion Farming Tips
-Onion can be grown under irrigation or rain fed.
-At growing stage, onions require light but frequent watering.
-Excessive watering must be avoided since it can result into root rot.
-Water application is increased as plant grows but should be reduced towards crop maturity.
Onion thrips
-Thrips cause significant economic losses, by reducing yields up to about 60%.
-Their damage to young onions is more devastating than on larger plants late in the growing season.
-Thrips feeding opens up the onion to secondary infections.
-They also attack leeks and garlics.
-The primary method used for managing thrips is the application of insecticides. -Thorough coverage of plant tissues with insecticides is needed to provide good control. -This requires moderate spray pressures and high application volumes.
Onion tip burn.
-Wind, sun stress, excess soil salts, and other environmental factors can cause onion tip burn.
-There may also be soil pathogens or even a lack of an important nutrient.
-Watering every day may be too much.
-Water to keep the media moist, but not wet.
White Onions
-Grow them in a sunny spot that has fertile, well-drained soil with a pH of 6.0 to 6.8.
-Improve your native soil by mixing in several inches of aged compost or other rich organic matter.
-Onions aren't great at taking up water, so it's important to keep soil moist so their shallow roots can drink up.
-Onion seedlings need a healthy, loose soil.
-In the rainy season you need to raise the seedbed so the onion roots will not rot.
-If you use quality seed, most of the seed will germinate and you need much less of it.

Botrytis leaf blight
-It is a very common disease that is caused by the fungus Botrytis squamosa, which overwinters as sclerotia in soil, on onion debris and on bulbs in cull piles.
-Description: The first symptoms of leaf blight are greyish-white, oval-shaped spots, about 1 to 3 mm in length that appear on the leaves.

Onion Farming
-Curing of the onions is done by uprooting every single stem and leaving it to dry after which leaves and roots are cut off with a sharp knife.
-A good harvest offers 20-25 tonnes per acre depending with the variety.
-Start with quality seedlings to get quality harvest.
-Growing onions requires abundant sun and good drainage.
-Raised beds or raised rows are ideal, especially if your soil is heavy clay.

Red Creole
-It is a medium maturing, open-pollinated short day red onion.
-Red Creole is well adapted and very widely planted.
-The outer scale is dark red; the rings are tight and red right through to the centre of
the bulb.
-The bulbs taste slightly pungent, are firm, with a granex shape.
-Red Creole onions are resistant to pink root rot, tolerant to other disease, have very
little bolt resistance.
-Best time to plant onions in Kenya is during hot months like January.
-The red creole onions are very hard and therefore they require water moderately.
-The good thing is that they can also grow well in places that have intense cold temperatures; favoring the farmers.

Spring Onion Farming
-Spring onions are ready to harvest around eight weeks after sowing.
-Spring onions can grow in a variety of areas since they can tolerate heat and cold.
-When planting directly, make rows 30 cm apart.
-Spring onions rot in waterlogged soil, so do plant them in well-drained ground, and be
careful not to over-water.
-It's also crucial to keep weeds away because like all onions, spring onions hate competition.
