I get alot of "do you still farm" on my DM's.Yes I do.And it's gotten more tedious as ever as we added a huge chunk of virgin land.Coupled with my 8-5,it's been hectic to beat you farm stories...nachoka hadi dichotomous...but am endeavouring to try and give 2 posts on farm shens a week.I fired my farm manager and got a new one.Me.So I supervise closely and make more trips to the farm often whenever an opportunity arises.Just so to put things in order. And for the first time in the history of My farming journey,Kiki's fresh Fields was ready a week before the onset of rains.I have indulged me and my time for this hence i know I will harvest bountiful. Also, we tried a new way of farming where we incorporated fertilizers at the point of planting time unlike earlier were we would plant then apply fertilizers after the plant has grown. Also we not doing alot of maize as we had a bountiful harvest last season so a big chunk of land is under a variety of beans and veggies. So,how are you?have you too planted?

Am sure most of you don't know what these are and their usage..these are very salient tools in a farmer's life. They help in securing storage for the farmers products.Keeping it safe and Fresh. These are gunny bag sewing needles.I knew of them when I was very young as my gran gran used them .Si I have just walked into an agrovet shop in the CBD.Found two beautiful ladies and I innocently greeted them and asked if they have "sindano ya kushona gunia"...Aki they both laughed.Ile kicheko ya Gen_Z.The kind that is pitched with a little madharau and a haha at the end.Kind that called me out "mshamba wewe"...Si me I walked out to another agrovet.Hata sijaskia vibayaπŸ₯ΉπŸ₯ΉπŸ₯Ή

Farming is a business and just like any other businesses, we too encounter business ups and downs. One of the biggest challenge a farmer faces is that of having a trustworthy, honest, available farmhand.Kind that would feedback you on what happens in the farm.Being a farmer who also has an 8_5 job and other businesses to run, I appreciate constant updates on the farm happenings.Unfortunately, this has not been it the last two weeks. My current farmhard supervisor is quite bossy and would intimidate the rest of the farm workers with threats of firing them.Last week,he told one of them not to get into the farm rather go and prepare them porridge and even ordered him to sale my silage with an explanation of "nitakuja kumueleza"😳.And so today we hold it different.I have hired day labourers to work on the farm.Sometimes being a little tough protects one from alot.Putting your foot down too saves alot.Last season I lost three sack bags of beans that were sold to a local cereal vendor. When the news reached me,I went to the vendor's shop to reclaim my beans at midnight.I couldn't let a whole season's work get lost!I approached the vendor's shop with English of the nose and a few legal terms here and there,I managed to reclaim 2 sacks.Since then whenever harvesting is being done,I supervise the same myself.I have been character developed enough.πŸ˜‚ Otherwise,Hapa kazi Tu.

One of the first steps in being a successful farm manager is keeping well-maintained, accurate records and establishing a sound record-keeping system.Just like any other business,a farmer needs to keep good records to monitor the progress of the farm. This increases the likelihood of business success as one is able to track profits and losses.

Seasons have changed.A time like this last year alot of maize was dry so we were massively harvesting. It is very crucial and salient for a farmer to understand Seasons. Now we just roam the shamba with a panga and choose that which is dry.It would be impossible to harvest over 4 acres under maize and sun dry due to the issue of afflatoxin. So we let the maize dry 'naturally" and only harvest that which is completely dry. .

I never thought in my bewildered of dreams that I would ever become a farmer.Born and bred in the City of Nairobi,I had zero chances of one day becoming one.It is one of those trips to the village to see gran gran and a short stay in the village that sparked curious interest in this field that is agriculture. The magic that is planting a seed and getting several seeds from the one seed planted was truly fascinating to me.And so when I sat for my KCSE exams,it was by no doubts that I chose Agriculture as one of my booster subjects.Since then I identify myself as a farmer and my pronouns are she/herπŸ˜‚.The other day I was with a group of People and we were introducing ourselves.I said "My name is Kiki and am a farmer".You should've seen the looks on their face."You are too young to be a farmer "....was their response.None of my pals to-date believes am a farmer, despite the many pics and blogs on my farming journey. And so am planning a maiden trip for them to the farm. The notion that only the old and tattered looking people are considered farmers is one of the reasons am in this field. To change that narrative. To increase food production and engage into smart farming methods. That farming can too be a professional career..Farming is therapy, farming is calming to me.I am at my best when am in the farm. .
