Here are some key steps to help dogs settle in after air travel:
1. Create a Calm Sanctuary
- Prepare a quiet, comfortable space in your home where the dog can feel safe and decompress. Use a familiar blanket or bed to provide a sense of security.
- Minimize noise and activity in this initial settling area to help reduce stress from the travel experience.
2. Hydration and Light Feeding
- Offer fresh water immediately, but don't force large amounts of food right away.
- Provide a small, easily digestible meal a few hours after arrival to help the dog recover from travel.
3. Gradual Introduction to New Environment
- Allow the dog to explore the new space at their own pace.
- Keep initial interactions calm and low-key.
- Avoid overwhelming the dog with too much stimulation or too many new people/pets immediately.
4. Routine and Consistency
- Establish a consistent feeding, walking, and rest schedule as quickly as possible.
- Stick to familiar commands and routines from before the travel to provide a sense of normalcy.
5. Gentle Exercise and Bathroom Breaks
- Take short, calm walks to help the dog stretch and relieve themselves.
- Be patient, as the dog may be tired and disoriented from the journey.
6. Watch for Signs of Stress
- Monitor for any unusual behavior, excessive panting, or signs of anxiety.
- Provide extra comfort and reassurance during this transition period.
Remember that each dog is different, and some may take a few days to fully adjust to a new environment after air travel.
