EMPOWERING NUTRITIONISTS THROUGH PRACTICAL TRAINING: SOY AFRIC’S ROLE IN ADVANCING THERAPEUTIC FEEDING PRACTICES IN KISUMU.
Kisumu County marked a significant step in healthcare as nutritionists gathered at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital (JOOTRH) for a hands-on Continuous Medical Education (CME) session. The training focused on the preparation and application of therapeutic feeds, emphasizing nutrient-rich porridge made from maize, soya beans, sugar, and fortified with essential minerals and vitamins. Participants learned precise calculations for fluid and caloric allowances to tailor therapeutic diets for various patient needs, including lactose-free and texture-modified options for specific conditions. Chronic illnesses like diabetes and kidney disease were also addressed, alongside tools like Vitamin A Monitoring Charts and Nutrition Service Registers to improve documentation and commodity management.
Soy Afric played a crucial role in this initiative by showcasing its fortified blended foods, CSB (Corn-Soya Blend) and NutriDense, which are crafted with locally sourced, nutrient-dense ingredients. These products, ideal for therapeutic diets, were highlighted for their ability to support recovery and address nutritional gaps for vulnerable populations, including children, lactating mothers, and individuals with HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis. By equipping healthcare professionals with practical skills and innovative solutions, Soy Afric reinforces its commitment to advancing sustainable feeding practices and improving health outcomes in Kisumu and beyond.
