Two weeks ago, I lost my dad after his courageous battle with cancer. Before he left, he emphasized the importance of embracing the unknown and trusting in the unseen. He reminded me that life holds mysteries and possibilities beyond what we can comprehend.

Today's Lesson from Dog was reminded to me by my late dad. Lesson #8: There is more than life.

We often think bad behavior from a dog is due to the dog. Yet, we often fail to reflect on our "pawrenting" skills. A well behaved dog often has an owner that invests the time or money into training. A poorly behaved dog often has an owner who thinks the dog was inherently born that way and there is no ability to improve such behavior. Poor behavior is, more often than not, due to poor conditioning habits from the owner. Observe your own behavior, reflect on what behaviors you are reinforcing with your dog. Then create a plan of action to recondition those behaviors, and then recondition them.

Working to help rehabilitate and train dogs is more than a job, but truly a passion of mine. A family that was struggling with their dogs constantly fighting and not being able to easily live together reached out in search of help for their two pups with littermate syndrome. Littermate syndrome is a behavioral condition that can occur when two puppies (regardless of if they are from the same litter or not) around the same age are raised together and become overly dependent OR aggressive with each other, leading to lack of harmony inside and outside the home.

I am thrilled to report that after several weeks of intensive training and rehabilitation, these two pups have made incredible progress! They have not only learned to trust, but have recreated thier bond with one another.

It has been a long and challenging road, but watching these dogs grow and thrive proves that with training, structure, boundaries, and guidance most problems can be resolved.

Most people struggle with getting their dogs to listen to basic commands, but the reality is most dogs don't care to follow through when their owners don't hold them accountable. Why should they? Here at Wolfgang Dog Training we focus on bond and relationship, then engagement, then training, and then lastly accountability. Dogs NEED accountability, just like people do. If you want your dog to respond to commands, regardless of who they come from you need to keep your dog accountable.
