Now that I got your attention with this random video I took today, I'll take the opportunity to talk about my birds, how they live here at the sanctuary, what's their daily life like, what are the dynamics around here...
Although the birds depend on me for food, safety, medical care, and their well-being overall...
I try my best to provide them with a sense of independence as much as I can.
My birds ( technically not my birds ) live in big flocks. They get to choose their friends. They get to decide when to play, when to nap, when to fly, and when to eat ...
They don't wait for me all day in a cage waiting to get some attention and a few cuddles ( They have each other. )
They can even decide whether to like me or not. Believe me when I tell you that not all the birds at the sanctuary like me, but I can assure you that none of them is scared of me.
I don't train my birds, I don't ask them or force them to do anything, I just reward good behaviors, that's all.
A lot of the birds here are wild caught , but even the captive bred ones will act like wild birds whenever given the chance, which is how they are supposed to be.
Parrots are wild by nature and will always be, and that's why, after years of living with these amazing creatures, I came to the absolute conclusion that they should not be pets.
Before you say it, I know that it's impossible to set all captive parrots free, I wish it was...
Therefore, it's our duty to offer those ones the best life we can offer. It's our duty to love them and treat them the way they are and not try to change them into something they are not .
It's also our duty to help keep their wild cousins wild and free by fighting the illegal trade of wildlife anyway possible.
How ? Very simple. Stop the demand , the trade will stop .
Dreaming of a day when rescue is no longer needed !
Just a random video with the greys .
Merry Christmas everyone ❤️
Some people commented on our last post that koki was sad ... well, it was her first day in the Grey Aviary yesterday, and it's only normal for her to feel a bit awkward, especially when she hasn't been around other parrots for at least 25 years.
Look at her today, feeling more relaxed and enjoying some foraging. She even went after me at the end of the video 😀
Others commented that we lack toys, we need bigger cages, we need good food, and on and on ...
Well, we don't need bigger cages because almost all our parrots live in big aviaries. The cages that we have are either temporary like for quarrantine, we use as perches until they are replaced with branches, and we leave them in the aviaries for the new birds that join the flock until they feel comfortable enough to be without a cage ...
Our birds live in huge aviaries divided into compatible flocks. They are free to fly, play, bathe, socialize, forage, and rest whenever they want. They get to make choices and choose their friends. They also get a varied diet of pellets, seeds and nuts, and lots of fresh foods.
We may not have fancy expensive toys but isn't foraging and chewing on natural branches the best toy any parrot can have ? Besides going after me 😀
Miracles do happen. Sometimes, they take longer than expected. Sometimes, they happen gradually, but eventually, miracles do happen.
Our wish for this holiday season is to finish the second part of our sanctuary. We need to be ready to help more animals whenever needed, and we can only do this with your help.
We need as many Santas as possible to make this happen. Would you be one of them ? Would you be part of making this miracle happen ?

Mango also came to us from a war zone, but unfortunately, his family left the country, so we are his family now.
He finished his quarrrantine and was supposed to join the other small birds, but Mango has other plans.
He was not very comfortable with the other birds and kept on flying back to me, and of course, I will not force him into something he didn't want , so we're taking things slow until he's more comfortable...
Meanwhile, he's very happy and will spend all day cuddling if he can .
I'm afraid I won't be able to take in more birds as I'm running out of space , and I don't have enough funding to close those rooms.
It really breaks my heart. I will keep doing my best to help more birds but I feel helpless...
And here's Coki, one of our war guests .
