Highly distinctive, and is not easily mistaken. Possessing a muscular and compact build, an ovular head and deep-set, almond-shaped eyes, small ears and sturdy legs, the breed is commonly recognised in colour variations of brindle, red, black, fawn and tricolour.

This breed will have patterning on the head but nowhere else. Combining the best features of its early forebears the Bulldog and Old English Terrier, the breed is engineered for resilience, fearlessness and companionship, with the modern breed having lost some of its in-bred fighter instinct.

This breed was once a fierce gladiator, but they are much gentler now. A Bull Terrier may have a preventive effect and may defend its owner in an emergency, but it is not bred to be a guard dog. The Bull Terrier is a loyal, polite, and obedient dog that is courageous, scrappy, fun-loving, active, clownish, and fearless.

Bulldogs differ only from regular French Bulldogs in that they have a slightly longer, fluffier coat. Although incredibly rare and ridiculously expensive they do exist. And they are not actually mixed breed dogs as some people believe but pure, 100% French Bulldogs.

To create a more docile and affectionate family pet, the Old English Bulldog was crossed with the Pug. Frenchies are very people-oriented. They like to be in close contact with people and do not do well when left alone for long periods. They are prone to separation anxiety for this reason and do not make suitable animals for those that are out of the house for much of the day. The Bullmastiff is different from a traditional guard dog. He was trained not to bark or bite intruders. Rather, his job was to track quietly, pin and hold poachers without mauling them. Wealthy landowners did not want their Bullmastiffs to scare away or injure the thieves — only to apprehend them. These instincts have remained with the Bullmastiff, as his role has shifted from game guard dog to family companion.
