"Can Hippos sleep underwater?"

Yes, hippos can sleep underwater! They have a unique reflex that allows them to surface, breathe, and sink back down without waking up. This adaptation helps them stay submerged for extended periods, keeping cool and safe from predators.

Emus are fascinating creatures! They're the second-largest living bird by height, native to Australia. Emus are flightless birds known for their long necks and legs, as well as their ability to run at speeds of up to 30 miles per hour (50 kilometers per hour). They're omnivores, feeding on a variety of plants and insects. Emus also have a distinctive call, which sounds like a booming drumbeat. They're not only interesting from a biological standpoint but also play significant roles in Australian culture and history.

International Leopard Day is a global initiative aimed at raising awareness about conserving leopard populations and their habitats worldwide. It emphasizes the threats faced by leopards, including habitat loss, poaching, and human-wildlife conflict.

The Sri Lankan leopard, an endangered subspecies, is native to Sri Lanka and faces similar conservation challenges. Dehiwala Zoo contributes to leopard ex-situ conservation through captive breeding, education, and advocacy. These efforts contribute to the preservation of Sri Lankan leopard populations both in captivity and in the wild.

Celebration of the 2nd birthday of our loving Royal Bengal Tigers.

Bengal tiger, (Panthera tigris tigris), subspecies of tiger (Pantheria tigris) inhabiting the hot and humid forests, and wetlands of India, Bangladesh, Bhutan, and Nepal.
The Bengal tiger’s appearance is distinguished from other tiger subspecies by its orange coat accented by prominent brownish-to-black stripes; a rare white-coated variant of the subspecies (the white tiger) also exists. The Bengal tiger rivals the larger, thicker-furred, cold-climate Siberian tiger in size, and most experts consider the Bengal tiger to be the world’s second-largest tiger. While some 2,000–2,500 remain in the wild, several thousand more are thought to reside in zoos and reserves around the world.

The largest male Bengal tigers can grow up to about 3.2 meters (10.5 feet) long (including a 1-meter- [3.3-foot-] long tail) and weigh nearly 295 kg (about 650 pounds). Females are smaller, the largest ones measuring about 2.7 meters (9 feet) long and weighing as much as 181 kg (400 pounds). They are solitary hunters, preying primarily on ungulates (including deer and antelope), gaurs, and wild boars (Sus scrofa).

Endangered
The International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN) considers the Bengal tiger to be an endangered subspecies

Do Owls Close One Eye?

Because owls are nocturnal animals, it is sometimes hard for them to remain in the daylight glare for a long time without closing their eyes.

They prefer to stay in foliage or dim places throughout the day to block out the light. Their pupils are not so great at blocking out the light and sometimes they close their eyes halfway.

The eye of the owls is designed in a way that they have more rod photoreceptors than cones in their retina.

Rods work best in dim light and as such owls are much more suited to nighttime activities.

Sometimes they might decide to rest one eye and leave the other open. This allows them to rest both sides of their brains alternatively.
