WECare Worldwide

WECare Worldwide WECare Worldwide is a UK Registered Charity (reg no. 1162386) set up by veterinary surgeons to help.
(219)

As vets, we endeavour to provide the very best standard of care for all of our patients. Thing is, we have now acquired 3 million more so we need your help! WECare Worldwide is an organisation set up by UK volunteers in Newcastle upon Tyne, to give free veterinary care to animals in need worldwide. Ultimately, WECare Worldwide plan to extend veterinary services around the globe but, right now, we

are concentrating on tacking the issues with the street dog population in Sri Lanka, where we have witnessed some of the worst cases we have ever seen. It is estimated that there are up to 3 million street dogs in Sri Lanka. WECare Worldwide are in the process of carrying out a 5 year plan, in which we will look to help eliminate rabies in the country and also humanely reduce the numbers of unwanted street dogs. We also provide top level treatment for the many sick and injured animals on the island, including those affected by maggot wounds, fractured bones and hot water burns, which are very common. We provide all of our expertise for free 24/7, 365 days a year but we really need help with the cost of medicines and equipment which, we can assure you, are most definitely not free!! Please help us to make monumental changes to the lives of these animals. You can find out more about the charity on our website or by contacting the committee at [email protected]

You can donate in person at any Westway, Value Vets or Easyvets branch by cash or card. You can also donate online at http://wecareworldwide.org.uk/donate/

🔉Sound on for this one — you can thank us in the comments 🤪

It’s soooo easy to assume street dogs are a lonely bunch — but in fact most of them have their own little family and community; a human, canine and sometimes feline community that is all they have known since the day the day they were born 💛🥹

In Sri Lanka, you’ll see dogs who sleep curled up together every night 🧡

Dogs who wake in the morning and go on a group stroll to see their other mates down at the temple before heading to check out what their humans are up to at the roti shop 🧡

Mothers and aunties raising litters on the beach, teaching them the ways of the world whilst the surrounding humans fret and ply them all with endless amounts of food 🥘

Gangly teenagers play-fighting in the road like they own the place (because, frankly, they do 😅)

Old, wise boys sitting with the fishermen in the harbour, watching the world go by… and getting the odd fishy treat for their companionship 🫶🏼

There is love everywhere. Family everywhere. And just because it may not look like your family set-up, it doesn’t mean it’s any less real 🧡

ADOPTION DAY SHENANIGANS 🐶💫 As you probs know by now, we put dogs back on the street wherever safe to do so as it’s the most sustainable way of addressing the ole street dog sitch in Sri Lanka. Dogs that require rehoming stay at WECare until we find them forever homes, and one of the best ways of finding homes is via an adoption day! 💪🏼We make things as easy as possible for people by quite literally bringing the dogs to them — essentially an adoption day on WHEELS 🚐

Wanna find out which of our cuties found homes? Curious about what the adoption process looks like here in Sri Lanka? Our next newsletter has all the details and will be landing in inboxes in a few days 👀 Sign up below to join the pack! https://wecareworldwide.org.uk/sign-up/ 💌

Brown was picked up in the middle of the night on Avurudu (Sri Lankan New Year) last month, after he was hit by a vehicle 🥺

Avurudu is SUCH an amazing time to be on the island; it’s basically the equivalent of Christmas for Sri Lankans. We love it. But one thing we don’t love is the near constant sound of firecrackers, which went on for about a week! 😲 We find the noise overstimulating, so we can’t even begin to imagine how terrified the dogs feel, considering their hearing is MUCH more sensitive than ours 😖

Every year, without fail, owned and street dogs go missing when they get lost (or worse 😔) trying to escape the noise. We always get an influx of RTAs around this period as many petrified dogs bolt into the path of oncoming traffic. Janey even had to scoop two dead dogs off the road the morning after Avurudu — such needless and tragic deaths.

Thankfully, Brown was one of the lucky ones — despite finding himself with a traumatic head injury and a sore leg, we managed to save his life 🙌🏼 After two and a half weeks of love, snuggles, and expert vet care at Chez WECare, he was able to return home to his mates 💪🏼Big love to our Assistant Operations Manager Julie who rushed out to fetch Brown out-of-hours, and a big sloppy dog kiss to all of you guys, because WECare wouldn’t exist without your support 🫶🏼

It’s Eurovision AKA the time of the year where the UK remains optimistic that the rest of Europe won’t vote politically and remind us how hated we are 🥰 Will we actually get any points or will we be nil pois-ing our way home from Switzerland? (Who are we kidding? We’re used to it by now 😆) It was mixed reactions from our resident dogs but we’ll be banning them from the phone lines tonight, just in case…

One thing's for sure, we’ll be rooting for you Remember Monday (even if some of our dogs clearly aren’t 🤪)

Will you be watching Eurovision? Who you gonna vote for? Let us know in the comments, dawgs! 👀

Remember Bert? This filthy little fella was found in a chimney (hence being named after the chimney sweep from Mary Poppins…) suffering from a horrible case of cat flu. He had such severe conjunctivitis and swelling that we couldn’t even see his eyeballs 😲Weighing only 0.25kg, he was suuuuuuper weak and we reckon he was only about 6 weeks old on admit - not the best start in life, hey? 🫠Closer inspection revealed corneal ulcers, which must have been giving him hell, poor boy 😩

We set to work straight away with antibiotics and eye drops, and slowly but surely the swelling went down and his EYEBALLS appeared! 🙌🏼We can’t quite believe this is the same cat! He’s feeling SO much better now, so all we have left to do is finish his vaccine course and neuter him when he’s big enough, then he’ll be returned to the lovely folk who found him.

We say this tiiiiiiiiime and again, but we really wouldn’t be able to help animals like Bert without your support, so THANK YOU. And a chim chim cher-oooooooooooo 🧹

We celebrated Vesak this week, which is one of the most important dates in the Buddhist calendar! It’s a super lovely festival of light that commemorates the birth, enlightenment, and death of Buddha 🪷The neighbourhood is a-twinkling with all the lights and lanterns hanging outside people’s houses — we love it! ✨Buuuuuuuuuut we reckon everyone’s favourite Vesak tradition is dansal, where people set up stalls in the street giving out free food!! 🤤Yup, you’ll probs get stuck in traffic trying to meander through the seemingly endless lines of people waiting their turn for free curry, soup, pizza, ice lollies, or cold drinks. The idea is to remind everyone about the Buddha’s teachings on kindness and generosity 🫶🏼We got into the spirit by giving out a load of deliiiiiiiiicious ice cream outside the clinic — and yes, of COURSE the local street dogs got a cheeky lick 🍦

Meet Koka 🫶🏼 This delicious boy was found dumped and collapsed in the street with suspected dog bites on his flank and abdomen🥺

Koka was in a reeeeeeeeally bad way when he got to us- he was very weak and completely unresponsive with a respiratory rate through the roof, and minutes from death, according to our vets 😣

After initial tests we found that he was likely suffering from sepsis, and as such had a dangerously low blood pressure and blood. It wasn’t looking good 😔

On top of that, we were very concerned that the puncture wound on his underside connected internally, which would require urgent surgery and there is no wayyy that Koka was a surgical candidate at this stage 😬 Thankfully, ultrasound scans revealed that the wounds were superficial in nature and didn’t communicate intra-abdominally, which gave us one less thing to worry about 🫣

Stabilising him was our main priority so we set to it with aggressive fluid therapy and a pretty solid antibiotic combination- can you BELIEVE he was scoffing food after just a few hours?! And giving us purrs and smooches the next morning?! 🫶🏼

We weren’t out of the woods just yet unfortunately, as the next morning the skin around the wounds became necrotic (dying and sloughing off). Luckily for Koka, we know a thing or two about wounds 😏

We managed the site as open wounds initially, waiting until we had the infection under control and all the nastiness had sloughed before we then headed to surgery to sort out the wound PLUS repair a lovely little hernia we had also discovered PLUS remove a few cute-looking testicles that had no business being there ✂️😈

After a couple of weeks of WECare luuuuuuuuuurve Koka was good to go, and we dropped him back with his new guardians AKA the lovely folk who found him 💪🏼

What an amazing glow-up, Koka — you had us scared for a second there, boyo!! 💫
