WECare Worldwide

WECare Worldwide WECare Worldwide is a UK Registered Charity (reg no. 1162386) set up by veterinary surgeons to help.
(115)

As vets, we endeavour to provide the very best standard of care for all of our patients. Thing is, we have now acquired 3 million more so we need your help! WECare Worldwide is an organisation set up by UK volunteers in Newcastle upon Tyne, to give free veterinary care to animals in need worldwide. Ultimately, WECare Worldwide plan to extend veterinary services around the globe but, right now, we

are concentrating on tacking the issues with the street dog population in Sri Lanka, where we have witnessed some of the worst cases we have ever seen. It is estimated that there are up to 3 million street dogs in Sri Lanka. WECare Worldwide are in the process of carrying out a 5 year plan, in which we will look to help eliminate rabies in the country and also humanely reduce the numbers of unwanted street dogs. We also provide top level treatment for the many sick and injured animals on the island, including those affected by maggot wounds, fractured bones and hot water burns, which are very common. We provide all of our expertise for free 24/7, 365 days a year but we really need help with the cost of medicines and equipment which, we can assure you, are most definitely not free!! Please help us to make monumental changes to the lives of these animals. You can find out more about the charity on our website or by contacting the committee at [email protected]

You can donate in person at any Westway, Value Vets or Easyvets branch by cash or card. You can also donate online at http://wecareworldwide.org.uk/donate/

Mr Black is possibly our eldest patient at WECare. According to community members, he is a whopping 17 years old! ✨ that’s 119 in dog years🫶🏻 He’s also lost most of his teeth, that’s why he’s so tongue-y, but it just adds to his viiibe😋

We were called to his aid by his community this week when they noticed he had an incredibly nasty wound on his ear. It had become infected, as well as infested with maggots🪰, and the poor old man was in a lot of pain.😔

🙌🏻He’s with us at the WECare hospital, but has a long road ahead of him, especially for an elderly gentleman!

We see SO many of these types of wounds, which if treated early would heal quickly, but the lack of access to veterinary care for these animals results in a far more complicated wound, longer healing time, and greater discomfort. 🥺

Your donations could help Mr Black, and countless dogs like him here in Sri Lanka. 🐾

Nothing in this world is quite as flattering as a Cone of Shame 💅🏼😝

This gorgeous boy is one of approximately 30 patients we have at the WECare Hospital this week and- as always- we are full to the brim with pop-ups being used as overflow 🤪

But, this week, alongside the usual all-consuming chaos at the hospital and out at CNVR (catch-neuter-vaccinate-release), we have had the ever-so-welcome treat of a little bit of exposure via the lovely humans that are and .harbison ✨ That has meant that we have the pleasure of welcoming a lot of beautiful new humans to our page, our work and our reality 🤗

Thank you so so much for joining us, it really does mean the world to have you along for the ride 🫶🏼 We can’t promise it will be organised, regular or curated (😂 we are vets trying to do social!) but what we can promise you is that we are forever hustling and saving street dog lives on the daily. Thanks to you guys. We can also promise you is that we give our all every single day and leave nothing in the tank. Because we believe in what we do with every ounce of our being, whether we have time to make a reel about that or not hahaha 😝

Thank you SO much for believing in us and getting behind us… team work makes the dream work ✨

PS. It would be remiss of us not to mention that all of the life-saving we do wouldn’t be possible without incredible donations from around the world. Thank you a million times over and the link is in the bio should you wish to change a dog’s whole future today 🙏🏼💛

✨ OUR JULES ✨ For those of you who have been to WECare, this may well be the friendly greeting face that you have come to know and love 🥰 Jules has been with us for over 5 years now and her dedication to WECare has been unwavering.. it’s very, very difficult to put into words how much she does for the dogs, her colleagues and the organisation as a whole but what we can say is that it doesn’t go unnoticed and we are so appreciative of the laughter, care and commitment that shines out of this wonderful, wonderful human 💫 We love you Jules 💛🧡💛

🌴 Sri Lanka is getting busier right now, full of people searching out the sun and the surf (and who can blame ‘em? It’s bloody beautiful 🌞).

However, this means that we get many calls and messages from concerned tourists about healthy street puppies 📞, asking us to come and scoop them up.

While we understand – and appreciate – their concern, we have to explain that, as a rule, we don’t take healthy animals off the street.

People are sometimes shocked by this (and can be pretty rude to us! 😬), but hear us out…

For a start, WECare isn’t a shelter. With 1-3 million roaming dogs on the island, we believe the most sustainable way of looking after them is keeping them on the street. Yuuup, even puppies! 🐶

Taking a puppy off the street deprives it of its only chance of learning how to survive as a roaming dog 🐕. So, we have to leave puppies to figure out their territory, food source and safe place to sleep 😴 – just like they’ve been doing for generations (It really is possible- look at this lovely adult dogs living the street dog dream 🥰🥰).

Did you know that one un-neutered female dog and her offspring can produce up to 27,000 puppies in her lifetime? (This is based on her litter containing eight puppies who each go on to have eight puppies, and so on. MATHS! 🤯) With the vast number of street dogs in the country it would be impossible to take in every single litter of puppies we come across 😅.

WECare is a bustling veterinary hospital 🏥, and with limited resources, we have to devote our time to the injured and sick street dogs, not the healthy ones.

For sustainable impact, we need to focus on preventing puppies being born in the first place - e.g. with our neutering programmes ✂️, which also make the mama dog’s life easier by stopping her endless pregnancy cycle, allowing her to look after number one 💙.

👆🏼 We have neutered over 1,000 dogs 😱 in this village and the next one along over the last 10 years… this photo was taken in 2014, can you guess where it is?! Big clue 🕵️‍♀️ It has changed A LOT since then! Guesses below 👇🏼

👅 BIG SMILES ALL ROUND 👅

It’s been a big week for Babe here but just as we near the end of his treatment, there are 40 more animals in desperate need of our attention. We are in the position of being the ones doing the veterinary work, which means that we don’t often have the capacity to spend the day making reels and promoting our work 🫣 Rest assured, we never stop and we have had a continuously full hospital (up to 40 patients plus 10-20 residents) for years now 🫠

Please know that none of this can be done without your support and we can’t thank you enough for all that you do 🙏🏼🙌🏼🙏🏼

You have given Babe, and thousands of others, LIFE. How insane is that?! ✨✨ THANK YOU WECARERS 🫶🏼

✨ SPECIAL ADOPTIONS ✨

Obviously aaaaall of our adoptees are tres special but these little munchkins have a bit of extra magic about them given what they have been through.

We are looking for homes for Saffron, French and Kai, 3 of our special-needs pups who are perfectly imperfect and could not be more beautiful in our eyes 🥰🥰

Slide number 1 is Kai… Kai came to us in October (8 weeks old) with a body wall rupture and tick fever- this was treated with surgery and meds however he then went on to develop some strange neurological signs a month or so later 😥 The result of this is a happy boy who loves life but does have a head tilt and is now COMPLETELY DEAF 😣 As you can imagine, he needs a home and garden that is 100% secure, with a committed owner. This is sometimes tricky in Sri Lanka as gardens are often open to the road so we are appealing to anyone who might know someone suitable on the island; his happy ever after has to be out there somewhere 😢

Slide 2 features Saffron and French… these two are completely in love and have become each other’s safety net 👯‍♀️ French also came to us in October (10 weeks old) with a head trauma after a potential road traffic accident. She had been unable to stand for 3 days at this point, meaning her chances of recovery were quite slim (time is of the essence with head traumas). Somehow, she has surpassed all of our expectations and is now walking again but is WOBBLY and quite reliant on her best friend Saffron (both of whom improved massively when they were paired up in a kennel 🥹🥹). Saffron came in after a road traffic accident (4.5 months old) that completely shattered her front leg, resulting in amputation. Although she is fine in herself now, she is VERY NERVOUS especially without French in tow… with the right home she will definitely thrive but she will need a lot of love 🧡💛

We would LOVE if Saffron and French could find a home together (they are the epitome of ADORABLE 🥰🥰) and if Kai could find his perfect parents in Sri Lanka.

Adopting a dog who has been through the mill is just so rewarding- you get to see them live the life they were almost deprived of at such a young age 🥹 DM us 🤗🤗🤗

This lively bunch would like to let you know that CNVR is up and running again after our festive break 🙌🏼🙌🏼

We will be out in the community improving thousands of human and animal lives and we would love as many of you to get involved in this mammoth effort as possible 💪🏼💛 We need volunteers, donors and also those with beautiful big motormouths to spread the word in the local area- NEUTERS AND VACCINATIONS ARE FREE FOR ALL (animals... don't bring your husbands please 😝).

Please keep an eye on our stories (and highlights) to find out where we are located each week and feel free to bring your owned or community dogs for treatment 😇 Just make sure you grab the location pin 📍 of where you pick the dog up from and we will do the rest.... 💫

☄️ CHAZZ TO THE RESCUE ☄️

This year has been ATROCIOUS on the weather front in SL (I know a lot of you will be rolling your eyes at that comment but it's truuuuue 🫣). The rain has been something to behold and the amount of resolve that the WECare team has had to display in order to keep up operations has been next-level!

As always, it's a crazy team-effort to get everything done and who is the glue that holds us all together?! CHAZZMAN!!!

Chazz is our trusty tuk-tuk driver but he also has a knack of being wherever we need him to be, whatever the time. It could be midnight and one of us could be on the road with a dog on the way back from a night out and who will pull up next to us as if by magic?! 💫 It sounds creepy buuuuut we prefer to call it fate 😂

This is Chazz bailing us out of a muddy spot on our recent adoption drive where we managed to rehome 5 very-well-deserving pooches! These doggies will go on to receive free WECare vet treatment for life as they often go to households with an average income of no more than £200 per month... if you would like to support the win-win situation where our dogs get a loving family and the family get their perfect companion then please do consider donating today- your help supports the whole community 🫶🏼🫶🏼

👋🏼 HI JOOOOO 👋🏼

Those of you who have been following us for a while, may remember our OG Hospital Manager Jo who took us from an empty shell of an ex-school into a fully-functioning emergency hospital dedicated to street dogs 🙌🏼

Jo left us back in 2019 after over 2 years working at WECare but last week we were SO EXCITED to welcome her back to the hospital for a visit 🫶🏼 This girl is sunshine in living form and we will never forget how much she sacrificed for us- WECare wouldn't be in existence without her ✨

Thushari, Lakmini, Julie, DN, Em, Chazz and Pasindu (our OGs who remain!) were thrilled to see her and it's like she had never been gone 😇 Come back anytime ; you will always be a part of the furniture here 👵🏼

11/01/2024

A multi-ethnic, multi-religious and multi-lingual country, Sri Lanka is largely Buddhist, with Buddhists accounting for 70.2% of the population. Classically there was some religious tension in the country but a recent study suggests that positive strides are being made in this area with 62% of Sri Lankans expressing positive sentiment about religious, ethnic and cultural diversity 🙌🏼🙌🏼

At WECare, we of course work closely with all members of the community however where we are located in the deep south (it kinda is Sri Lanka's version of the deep south too 🫣) results in us being mainly surrounded by those of Buddhist faith. We often get asked questions about the restrictions this places on us in terms of how we treat our patients- can we neuter? Are we able to euthanise etc?

Whilst we *sometimes* have some difficulty with the general public (the VAST majority are fab!!), what we tend to see is the faith leaders themselves strongly supporting our work by hosting Catch-Neuter-Vaccinate-Release Programmes at their temples for example, or bringing street dogs in need to the hospital (we have at least one monk per week visiting us 🫶🏼).

We have also had interesting conversations around euthanasia and karma being associated with intention, not action (i.e. if you mean to relieve the suffering of an animal then you will get good karma, if you kill an animal through evil intention then you will get bad karma).

We have only ever had incredible, caring and sensible interactions with monks (oh, apart from the one who filed a police complaint against us accusing us of selling body parts for money 🫣😅) and we are forever thankful for their support and kindness to animals.

THREE big perks of working at WECare-

1. THUSHARI- getting to work with this queen will make you smile every single day 🫶🏼 Her hugs are second-to-none!
2. Getting access to the best vet care on the island 💛
3. Being lucky enough to have first dibs on all the cuties up for adoption 😝 (Say hi to Thusahri's new cat Lyra who first arrived with us when she was only 3 weeks old but was readmitted with a bit of dehydration having had vomiting and diarrhoea 🤒).

We are GROWING as we commence on our 5-year-plan to achieve tangible change to animal welfare and veterinary standards across the island. We need the very best people on board as we take on the challenge of a lifetime! Keep an eye on our stories for upcoming roles, both in Sri Lanka and overseas ✨✨

✨ MEET NUWAN ✨

This dark horse is our Site Manager and his job involves everything from organising maintenance across our 5 sites (hospital, staff houses, offices and CNVR lorry 🫣) to ensuring we have all the official permissions we need to function in Sri Lanka... think 3 trillion letters to 3 trillion different people, and then a refusal because we used the wrong font 🙃

'Why label him as a dark horse?' we hear you ask? A quiet and retiring soul on the surface, Nuwan was thought to be quite a shy guy throughout the 3 years that Janey has known him.... UNTIL... this year's Staff Christmas Party 😇 Nuwan, our newly-crowned resident party-animal showed us all where it's at with his Santa performance, handing out Secret Santa presents with ultimate swag, before proceeding to entertain us all with his exceptional dance moves 🕺🏾 Check out our stories to see the legend in action!

Whilst he is very good at his day job and we don't know what we would do without him, we actually kinda rate 'Night-time Nuwan' and can't wait for the next installment! Thanks for being you Nuwan 🫶🏼

✨ THANK YOU ✨

Our beautiful little friendship with The Doctor’s House goes waaaay back and we have never taken their support for granted for one second 🫶🏻

From supplying us with raffle prizes to offering us sought-after market stall spots and then hosting us for endless team gatherings...They even got their hands dirty (and painty!) when they helped us to create the WECare Hospital back in 2017 - tDh have always been part of our story ✨

Recently, they sponsored a CNVR programme in their neighbourhood of Madiha/Polhena and it was a roaring success. Over the course of 3 days, we…

✂️ Conducted 91 Neuters.
💉 Administered 106 rabies vaccinations.
❤️‍🩹 Provided 9 treatments for those in need, including treatments of TVTs (sexually transmitted tumours) and severe skin disease.

We also had a record turn-out where owned animals were concerned with 22 dogs being presented for surgery on day 2 😱 This is just incredible and a huge boost for us as we focus our efforts on community engagement and ensuring our efforts are sustainable 🙌🏼

To our old pals at tDH- thank you so much for not only recognising the need within the community but also putting your money where your mouth is and doing something about it 🙌🏼 It is true testament to the type of people you are and we are proud to work so closely with you 💛

Madiha/Polhena desperately needs further programmes as there are a LOT of dogs in that area so if you live/run a business/holiday there and would like to sponsor a programme then please do reach out- have gotten the ball rolling so let’s keep up the momentum 🙌🏼✨🙌🏼

What a coming together of beautiful humans doing incredible things for the community. You don’t have to be a vet or nurse to help us- we actually need quiiiite a lot of help behind the scenes with project management, stock control, administration and social media...

If you’ve got any skill, we probably need it so drop us a DM if you want these friendly faces to be your new work colleagues (who wouldn’t?!) 🫶🏼🫶🏼

Throwing back to one of the first cases that treated in Sri Lanka over 9 years ago... This boy is Ben and he arrived in her garden in a terrible, terrible state; collapsed and pretty much taking his last breaths 😢 Unfortunately, Ben didn't make it but he passed in peace being showered with love. Little did he know, that he was about to inspire Janey to give up everything she knew and move to Sri Lanka full-time and help tens of thousands more animals over the next decade. Ben- you made a huge, huge difference in this world and you will never be forgotten 💛

Puppies! Need we say more? 💛

Well, yes probably... We get a LOT of phone calls about puppies on the street, buuuut as a rule, we don’t take healthy puppies off the street. Some people are shocked by this (which we totally understand), but taking a puppy off the street deprives it of its only chance to learn how to survive as a happy, roaming dog and work out where to get their food, claim their own territory and find somewhere safe to snooze (it reeeaaally is possible, trust us, we’ve seen it!) 🐶

Truth is, if we scooped up every lil puppy we saw, we’d have 1000's to rehome and we’re already finding it tough to find a loving home for our resident pooches as it is! Speaking of which… if you fancy being a total legend and sponsoring one of them to help us feed and house them while they wait for a new home, just head to our website! 😁🙏🏼

This is and the love of her life, Finbar 💛 He was ‘the one’ and, for Janey, his memory lives on in all that we have achieved here at ✨
Helping thousands of dogs in need is Finbar’s legacy; he taught Janey the meaning of limitless love and he is missed every single day.

This Christmas, we have created a ‘In Memory’ tree to remember those who have left often huge holes in our lives- as animal lovers the pain of losing a pet can be some of the worst pain we go through 😔 If you would like to remember your pet this Christmas time with a meaningful donation and a light or star on our Memory Tree then please do head to our special tree here: https://visufund.com/christmas-stars-lights-for-wecare/?p=1&t=97996
