A trust has been set up, called Tikiri-Trust named after one of our dogs, to own the property, where we have been living on rent earlier. In 2004 this was just a private residence of Padma, who is now our chair-person and managing trustee, and she had only three dogs and one kitten, and never wanted more than that because she wanted to have time to work on the streets, catching the strays to get t

hem sterilized and to treat them when they are sick, she still does that even now after the home-front has grown, but has less time available for this now because it is difficult for her to ignore the plight of the little pups being thrown onto the road and so we keep taking them in, hoping to re-home them, but some just don’t get adopted and then they grow up here and become permanent residents. Also some old and handicapped dogs have been finding a haven here to live out their lives. Besides the 150 plus dogs living inside the premises, 10 more are outside the gate arriving in time for breakfast and dinner. Every weekend, when the vet comes, 15 dogs or more from various places are here to be sterilized and some spend a few days for aftercare. Among the 50 cats in residence at the moment, 32 are oldies, they have been here for a long time, are used to the dogs and we have no plans to re-home them because adult cats do not adjust easily to a new environment, but we have kittens of various sizes, which we want to give for adoption soon before they get too big. From the adult cats, which are here some of them have certain handicaps, who have to live in enclosed areas and who could be given for adoption under certain circumstances… please consider to adopt one of them or help them by donating for a larger cat-garden, so that at least they can have more space outside the house since it is not possible to let them out into the garden. In spite of many sterilization-campaigns being carried out by us and by other organizations , dogs are still being abandoned, therefore we need places, where such dogs can find refuge and it’s a great blessing that this property has been donated to the Tikiri Trust. However the property has to be maintained and the inmates need to be fed and cared for, for which the Trust needs regular income. As right now the day-to-day upkeep of the shelter has to be secured first, it may be too early to talk about future-plans. However it would be very useful to purchase another piece of land adjoining this property for a quarantine-facility and to space out the animals, as with 200 animals on 120 perch some are living under stress, which we would like to relief as soon as possible. For more information feel free to contact us by phone or e-mail or come for a visit anytime.

People, who have dogs, usually spend more time outdoors and therefore receive more blessings from nature than others and the dogs themselves of course enjoy it too. When this pup was living in front of a small coffee shop in Passikuda she could hardly walk 10 meters because then she would already be chased away by other dogs as she had invaded another territory. Now, living in Austria, she can walk miles and miles and no one would stop her

Fireworks may dazzle some of us but they disorient street dogs and even our pets, increasing the risk of road accidents or them losing their homes!

Celebrate responsibly and with no noise this Avurudu season🎇❌
Let’s be mindful of their well-being too🐈🐕❤️

Last time I posted a picture of a dog, who can’t be rehoused and therefore needs a sponsor to maintain him in the shelter I had no luck. I will try another dog now. This is Sudhu. So pretty… but doesn’t trust people, only very few of us can touch her, unknown people can’t get close to her. Please consider to sponsor at least her meals. Thanks a lot

Because he was a cargi-pom cross this case made it to Facebook and got 22 shares up to now. However, this happens to hundreds of local dogs every single day. In most cases nobody is looking for them or finding their dead bodies since they are countless. Those of us who know about it suffer in silence every day, yet we don’t get tired of helping at least a few of them by giving them shelter. I have lost hope that laws could change people, but if more people become aware of the cruelty towards animals it will reflect in the society and bring about changes on all levels. Sometimes people ask me if I see signs of positive change in the country… I always say yes because I meet and know of more and more caring people… at least I like to believe that my perception is not selective… it may be ….???!!!

It is with a heavy heart that I write about an incident that took place on Ruhunukala Mawatha, Cotta Road, Borella on the 25th of February (last Sunday).

I witnessed a person in a white car with a red bonnet - dump a sweet, brown Corgi/Pomeranian cross (the image below resembles him) at the top of the road and drive away.

This road is home to 5 plus territorial street dogs, and the moment the dog was dumped, they chased him off. He ran away in fear.

For three days, I've been looking for him in the area. I went by tuk-tuk and asked around, but no one had any information about him. We had two other neighbours look for him as well. I couldn't stop thinking about how scared this dog must be, in the heat, with no family, water, or food, navigating an unfamiliar and unfriendly territory for the first time. I can't imagine the fear and heartache he must have felt during those three days.

Today, I found out that he met with an accident on Cotta Road. He was found dead in front of the Keells on Cotta Road.

To his owners, I want to say - to abandon your pet, who loves you loyally, in this sweltering heat, to fend for himself in an unfamiliar and busy area with nonstop traffic and fierce road dogs - you must not believe in an afterlife or hell, right? How else can you do something as heartless as this? Between the wars around the world and this, I think humanity is fast losing its humanity.

May the angel cross the rainbow bridge and rest in peace, and as for the people who dumped him - we will have to leave them to their karma.

This is why the Animal Welfare Bill must be resurfaced and passed, with extreme focus on tough penalties for such cases, with no loopholes.

We must be tougher on animal cruelty in Sri Lanka, and expect that from our government and each other as responsible citizens.

This beautiful dog had been homeless, roaming on the beach in Sri Lanka, now she is called Honey and has a home in Germany. She will be ready to travel from 10th of April onwards. Please let us know if you happen to fly to Frankfurt around that time and are willing to take her. Being a flight volunteer doesn’t involve any expenses nor does it cause any delay during check in or check out. But it helps to re-unite animals with the people who love them

Whenever I have a free minute and a free hand I watch out for a dog, who has not been photographed for a long time. Prema is one of them, she has been here for more than a decade and I remember many years ago I posted her several times when I was urgently looking for sponsors for dogs, who have little chance to be rehomed. Since I was not lucky I had given up, but today I want to try again. I had private resources to continue feeding and caring for the animals in the shelter. These resources have been depleted and now I need your help

Our Story / Über uns und unsere Arbeit

Also some old and handicapped dogs have been finding a haven here to live out their lives. Besides the 200 plus dogs living inside the premises, a few more are outside the gate arriving in time for breakfast and dinner.

Three weekends a month, when the vet comes, 20 dogs or more from various places are here to be sterilized and spend a few days for aftercare. Tikiri Trust also conducts field-clinics on request and between 100 and 150 dogs are being spayed/neutered and vaccinated in those clinics every month.

Among the 50 cats in residence at the moment, 40 are oldies, they have been here for a long time, are used to the dogs and we have no plans to re-home them because adult cats do not adjust easily to a new environment, but we have +/- 10 kittens at any given time and are always trying to find homes for them to give for adoption. In spite of many sterilization-campaigns being carried out , dogs are still being abandoned, therefore we need places, where such dogs can find refuge and it’s a great blessing that this property has been donated to the Tikiri Trust. However the property has to be maintained and the inmates need to be fed and cared for, for which the Trust needs regular income. As right now the day-to-day upkeep of the shelter has to be secured first, it may be too early to talk about future-plans. However we have some additional land and hope to raise funds to build on these as with 200 animals on 90 perch some are living under stress, which we would like to relief as soon as possible. One of the properties we have purchased is a little distance from here and 40 dogs already live there. There is space for more as soon as we find money to build the facilities needed. For more information feel free to contact us by phone, message or e-mail or come for a visit anytime.
